I leave a short scene (ignore the misleading video title) that is typical of what this series is all about. Heavy spoilers follow. So only continue if you've seen it or if you don't care to see it or if you just don't mind eating spoilers. (however 2 seasons of 6 half-hour episodes is all + 2 Christmas specials)
Tim's (Jim) flirtation and chemistry with Dawn (Pam) has been a staple of the show since episode one. It's one of the few things that keeps them in this job. But Dawn is engaged to a guy she doesn't seem happy with and in general their relationship just seems so wrong. In reaction, Tim makes up with a new colleague at some point, but it doesn't take long.
All the viewers are dying to finally see them together towards the end. In the latest episode, we learn that Dawn is preparing to make a new start - one she doesn't seem all that ready for - with her partner in America. But not to realize her dead dreams. Just before he leaves, Tim decides to play it all for everyone. He calls her, turns off the microphone (they don't forget the documentary format) and with muted sound we peek at them from afar talking and hugging. Then he returns to his office. He opens the microphone and announces to us "She said no by the way".
He continues his life in a job he hates saying he'll leave someday (he's been saying that since the beginning), while she goes to the other side of the world to start a family and live a miserable life surrounded by people she doesn't seem to love and such a.
As for the protagonist, David Brent (Michael Scott), in the penultimate episode he learns from management that he will be fired. In the last episode he sullenly begs them to give him a second chance, for the first time he leaves his ridiculous persona and speaks seriously, he promises to give it his all. But his bosses do not change their minds and he is fired. He at least expects to see his colleagues humiliated, but it doesn't seem like anything (at most they're afraid it's their turn, but they're not really sorry to see him go – maybe just Tim), they just get on with their jobs. And finally. That's it. This was life in the office.
It is not as wholesome as the American one, but it is more bitter and ultimately more real. In the office all dreams die. Here comes the first slap of life. The first setbacks.
(I love them both, I just wanted to mention the ending of the characters which clearly shows the difference in the approach of the two versions).
