Cowboy Bebop

Review by @steemychicken1 · 1379d · of Cowboy Bebop

What made me write about Cowboy bebop is the live action series on Netflix. So let’s talk about the anime first and continue about my take on the live action series

Anime Cowboy Bebop is one of the most popular anime and it is extremely likely that anyone who has dealt with the genre a little has already seen it. Cowboy Bebop consists of 26 mostly self-contained episodes in which the lovable crew of Bebop, a spaceship, gets into adventures. The series takes place in the not-so-distant future (somewhere in 2070), in a time when humans have conquered space, and our protagonists are bounty hunters, a profession that has become accepted since space is now very large, only for the police to cover it. The most important asset of the series is its fantastic aesthetics. We are talking about incredible animation, which always perfectly serves the plot and creates a unique atmosphere. Each episode has a different style, while in many episodes music plays a key role, which is inextricably linked to the style of narration and animation. The great success of the series is, therefore, the fact that it mixes in addition to different narrative and musical genres, creating different emotions for us each time. The series was unique and completely innovative and definitely worth your time.

Live action.

First of all, no one, expects the series to be as good as the anime. With this in mind, let's go to the positives and negatives of the series.

On the positive side:

• The protagonists. All 3 are amazing in the roles and very good choices. I had some misgivings about Faye but luckily she's captured exactly what she was in the anime.

• The atmosphere. Personally I really liked it and it was probably the hardest part of the transfer, but this whole noir-western-sci fi hybrid works out just fine

• The cgi. For a relatively low budget series, the cgi are very decent and do not disturb at all. However there are scenes where the green screen is obvious but luckily they are few,

• The soundtrack. Tank, Cat Blues and Space Lion are among the most characteristic pieces of the anime and luckily they are also in the series. Beyond that, though, the Jazz and blues music that accompanies most scenes puts you right in the mood.

On the downside

• Vicious. I don't know who made the choice, but the actor (at least in this role) is unacceptable. It makes one of the most enigmatic and insane villains look like a caricature.

• The screen time of Vicious and Julia. I understand that there had to be the side story of the two but unfortunately it takes away a lot of the mystery of both

It's an honest effort and compared to other anime adaptations It’s probably the best you can find. Animes are almost impossible to be adapted in live action movies or series!!

This was definitely better than the Death Note live-action which used CGI instead of a creepy Willem Defoe in make-up that would've made more sense since he was the voice anyway. Really liked the Cowboy Bebop anime. It had timeless style. Jet was a surprise for me but the actor did pretty well. Faye, Vicious, and Julia felt like roles that could've used more work. Faye was crazy and foul-mouthed in the live-action but just wasn't very sexy, all cool was stripped from Julia, and Vicious felt more pathetic than like the cool apex predator he was in the anime -- plus I hated that they took out that episode about him betraying that saxophone player during the moon wars. But they did a lot with a little and I'm surprised it was as good as it was. Also, where the hell has John Cho been? Haven't seen that guy since Harold & Kumar lol
