The flash

Review by @steemychicken1 · 1106d · of The Flash

.

Spoilers follow.

We overlook the fact that the film (like the rest of the last superhero movies) seems to have a below average marmite panel aesthetic and direction (no one can convince me that it is not written and directed by some ai).

We even overlook the positives of the film such as its effective emotional core and the (double) good performance of the protagonist.

And we come to the main reason for this humble post.

I really can't remember another movie, superhero or not, that hates its roots so much and mocks its characters so much for no real reason.

Cyborg: missing (I guess because of the beef with the studio)

Superman: back cgi stopping a volcano (??). The studio continues to pretend that Cavill doesn't exist even though they paid for several other insignificant cameos.

Aquaman: a one-minute look like a drunk, face-down in stinky water.

Batman: complete obsolescence. The same character who in previous movies has put down entire groups of mercenaries, superman, and an army of parademons and has stood with the justice league in battles against doomsday and steppenwolf, the same character couldn't stop a bathtub with 4 random mobsters. But to do it he needed help from literally half of the justice league and all this to play the prank with the lasso of truth.....

Zod: what was there no, one and the same. It's a deadly sin not to exploit Michael Shannon.

I could see from reviews that the film was a "love letter", a "nice farewell" to the snyderverse, however, the film never gave love in terms of script and direction to the universe from which it sprang to its characters. On the contrary, he seemed to hate them.

Michael Keaton's Batman is a bright exception to the lack of film, which looked like an organic synthesis of the character and was directed and written with passion (I imagine it was also the cinematic batman of the director's childhood).

I've not seen it yet but from what I've heard it doesn't sound good. Michael Keaton as Batman again would be the only reason I might watch it on streaming though!

Interesting take on the disdain for characters and I can see it. I didn't have high expectations but ended up liking the movie overall. I agree it would have been nice to see Michael Shannon have more of an interactive role. The movie lacked a solid 3-dimensional antagonist.
