SILVERTON SIEGE - A Real life event

Review by @stevenson7 · 1481d · of Silverton Siege

I got all sappy at some point while watching and I don't like getting all sappy, xd. Talk about a thriller, Silverton Siege is epic; epitomizes that. History is such a beautiful thing. I am a sucker for history, documentaries, and true events and all. Ah, forgive me, there I go again yapping about unconventional things people do, weird sh*t like a medieval creep. Oh no wait, I am a cool guy...

African Original

Silverton Siege is a movie about an anti-apartheid trio who were on a mission but their plan got foiled by an inside man. Amidst a hot pursuit from the cops, they were forced to seek cover inside a bank where they held hostages for a long time. Eventually, they started the "Free Mandela" movement. This event was significant in the history of southern Africa as it actually ignited the movement. A few years later Mandela was freed and he later become president.

THE BAD

I think I am going to be 'that guy', lol. Firstly, like every other movie adaptation of books, real-life events, etc., the movie scriptwriters almost always leave out some pertinent parts. It kinda feels like a rule now that movie adaptations would be sub-par. The movie had a somewhat inconclusive ending, but in reality, the trio all lost their lives and a couple of hostages too. Also, there were a couple of cliches. 'The racist guy who doesn't know sh*t', 'the white woman who tries to stand up for justice, 'the cop who tries to go against order stand for what right'. I know you'd say that is how it should be but, it seems way too predictable. I guess it's an adaptation so it has to be, stillllllllllll...

THE GOOD

History is never a thing of triviality. First off, for a bunch of 'newbies', the cast of this movie was pretty good. Thabo Rametsi who played Calvin Khumalo was brilliant. He was the leader of the group and his charisma and energy was satisfying to see. Just about sends the message of the severity of the matter (in the movie). He acted in another similar movie which delighted me too Amandla. The directors did a great job bringing this piece of history to light, and this felt like a great way to learn about it. A Netflix movie. I also feel this can and maybe should spiral into a documentary of those times. I'd definitely love to see it. Subjectively speaking, the 'sappy part' was good. It was when Calvin and one of the hostages Rachel got into a conversation of how their lives have been. It was a deep moment that.

STREAM OR SKIP?

One thing these type of movies/shows do is that they make you look stuff up. It's what they make me do anyways. After seeing a documentary or a real event adaptation, I immediately want to learn more. I remember when I saw Titanic, a few hours after I felt like a historian, a titanic expert, xd. This movie makes you do that, and that's a good thing. Learning a bit of history, especially for me as a Blackman (quite literally). You should definitely stream it. It does a decent job as a typical thriller heist movie and still achieves the 'documentary-style' ting. Pretty nice movie this.

Well there you have it, me going on about something I know nothing about, but in my defense, I actually streamed it on Netflix and I didn't just google this whole thing and claim it as mine, so that should count for something yeah? your upvotes? Cheers.
