It may be an unexpected surprise that the duo turns into a trio, but those who came to watch Johnson and Satham face the bad guys, they'll come out of the movie filled with happiness. The Fast & the Furious has become more fun and lighter over time, but Hobbs & Shaw can be considered the first film to actually be classified as an action comedy.
You can actually touch the rivalry between them to outperform each other at the same location, and in some cases, director David Leach seems to be making them shout impromptu insults at each other with very close-up shots of the camera to capture their smallest facial expressions. In these funny confrontations, the film succeeds in bringing these two stars together, but it nonetheless becomes a little shaky. Guardians of theGalaxy, for example.
However, the action works greatly. Atomic Blonde and Deadpool 2 are once again proving their prowess in shooting near--termbattles.
But the biggest problem with the film is its long duration, which lasts two and a quarter hours, which prevents it from maintaining the charm of its stars among the big action scenes. As the story slows down, it also doesn't help that when you feel the story is about to end, the text returns to deliver another half hour of plot. The film has two chapters in it, and Elba's role in him, who claims to be like "Black-skinned Superman," is not attractive or deep enough to maintain the tension required during either of these chapters. Brixton Lore is a superficial villain represented by Elba to add some dramatic touches rather than a deep real character.
Yet the series maintains its spirit. While Shaw fights to keep his family together (Helen Mirren once again plays her role as a criminal mother to some scenes), it is Hobbs who has to learn the value of his roots in the end, with a visit to Samoa for the final battle that highlights a culture that we see not quite in the movies.
The bottom line is that although Hobbs & Shaw is nothing like the style and theme of the first film in the Fast & Furious series, it proves that the series still has something to offer. This part may be weaker than some of the most recent highly successful films in the series (at one point a big action scene turns from night to day after a sudden thunderstorm in about 3 minutes), but it offers a lot of fun. Its heroes are well aware of this issue, and they offer the speed and fury required to overcome these weaknesses. Although it's too long, and not always successful, action scenes and comedic moments, Dwayne Johnson, Jason Statham and rising star Vanessa Kirby ensure enough fun in Fast & Furious is not about cars or racing.
