I’m not the devil, come to think of it I’m no angel either; just a human who enjoys movies a lot; only as much as to be identified a movie buff, that’s all. The devil and its prey and endless movies made out of such scenarios; let’s just call them fiction. Well, I thought, why not share some movie devils’ that I found iconic! If you want to know my favorite Lucifer of TV Series, it’s not Tom Ellis; it’s Mark Pellegrino.
I haven’t watched The Passion Of The Christ, so no comments there. Yes, I have chucked out The Omen Series. In the omen series, Damien was the antichrist, so it’s a bit debatable, maybe you should check out the tv series as well, though it was just one season. Although I would have added The Girl from the Ninth Gate, I wasn’t 100% sure if she was playing the character of the devil. Let’s call them honorable mentions shall we, and with that add the Devil from Bedazzled, Hades from Hercules, and Mephistopheles from Ghost Rider. So, let’s start with the bad bunch.
Robert De Niro - Angel Heart (1987)
Big scary manicured fingernails; yea, that was the first thing I noticed in Mr. Louis Cyphre (Robert De Niro). The name says it all doesn’t it and yet the protagonist Harry Angel (Micki Rourke) played so clueless and assuming it was a clownish foreign name. De Niro played a rather sophisticated old-money type personality; although he was very soft-spoken, his firm nature seen throughout the movie; also his fondness towards long wicked games wasn’t unseen. Devil will claim what’s due.
“If I had cloven hooves and a forked tail, would I have been more convincing?”
Peter Stormare - Constantine (2005)
The entry of Lucifer (Peter Stormare) was dramatic, to say the least; it was justifiable. If you notice all the devils that I have mentioned here are all about charisma, charm, and suave with a persuasive nature; Lucifer here was nothing like that. It was all about being the King of hell; it oozes corruption, ungodliness, and barbarous. Even though Peter Stormare’s creepy, meth-junkie, and sadistic portrayal of Lucifer was the best thing in this movie but the screen time; if it was just slightly more, perhaps he’d have been 2nd on the list.
”You know, when you cut too deep, you cut the tendons. Finger movement goes out the window."
Jack Nicholson - The Witches of Eastwick (1987)
Although, at times it made me sometimes feel like he was monologuing, Daryl Van Horn (Jack Nicholson ) turned from cool as a cucumber to a rage monster pretty quickly and what diabolical games he played with the three witches. He was an attractive master manipulator nonetheless and a sweet talker, and the witches got drawn to him like a moth to flames. Eventually realizing how much they have destroyed all around them, the witches decided to take him down once and for all.
“Do you think God knew what He was doing when He created woman? No shit. I really wanna know. Or do you think it was just another one of His minor mistakes like tidal waves, earthquakes, floods?”
Al Pacino - The Devil’s Advocate (1997)
Ah well, Al Pachino didn’t disappoint one bit. With all the tricks up on his sleeves, the charismatic personality, and all the treachery, it was no escape from the hotshot lawyer John Milton Aka the devil. With that much flare for theatrics, arrogance, and zest, all anyone could do is fall into his trap; and boy they did. With suicide being the last resort to Kevin (Keanu Reeves), the end seems like the devil’s plan only got delayed for just a while longer.
“Who, in their right mind Kevin, could possibly deny the twentieth century was entirely mine?”
Gabriel Byrne - End of Days (1999)
Yea well Devil against the Terminator and feeding off of “End of the world” frantic; with the world more and more scared that everything they know will end in a jiffy this movie gave them a little hope I suppose. Don’t tell Schwarzenegger but Gabriel Byrne, as the devil aka the suave uptown banker, was the better actor here among these two. You may find a hint of De Niro and a dash of Pacino (from their respective depiction) in Gabriel Byrne’s Satan. With devil’s traps all failing one by one and sent back to from whence he came, the movie was overall okayish. The devil was the interesting part to be said, have sympathy for the devil.
"Something good happens, “It’s His will.” Something bad happens, “He moves in mysterious ways.”
Viggo Mortensen - The Prophecy (1995)
Saved the best for the last; I barely have words to explain this particular one. Christopher Walken was as he portrayed Arcangel Gabriel and a horrific job he did, hats off. But the Devil, I can say Viggo Mortensen had outshined everything. The cold broodiness, the sadistic nature, the sarcastic scary remarks, utmost hate towards humanity; it’s all right there. Mortensen not only played his character methodically but also it will make your blood run cold and you’ll say that’s the devil. Some might say he wasn’t scary enough or perhaps he had a short screen time, but he used that time efficiently. Did I forget to mention that he was fighting for the people (though for his personal reason)?
“I was the first angel, loved once above all others, but like all true love... one day it withered on the vine.”
Oh yea, it was a list of 6, befitting right? It was only the sensible thing to do. Okay, I’m off watching other movies.
