"HEREDITARY" was Quite Disturbing, yet Enjoyable (Movie Review)

Review by @tegoshei · 1098d · of Hereditary

I've watched a bunch of horror films and series that my level of "scary" is quite difficult to reach. I've talked to one of my Taiwanese students recently who is also into horror films and recommended I watch ***HEREDITARY***.
I've been quite interested in this film when I watched the trailer a few years back, but didn't really find my way to watch it. And since the movie was brought up in our conversation, I decided to give it a shot.

***HEREDITARY*** is a 2-hour long movie which started quite slow then gradually built some tension and confusion. Well, I say confusion because the plot is actually kind of difficult to digest, but it added up to its beauty. I personally like difficult to understand plots which are full of twist and turns as well as some dark and serious take on the story. I like it when my mind is blown away by the events, and somehow I experienced it in this film.

The film is about a family who has recently lost an important member. She's the mentally ill mother of Annie and grandmother of her kids, Peter and Charlie.
They all have their own way of handling their grief for their family member's passing. However, Annie *(the daughter)* and Charlie *(the granddaughter)* had a slightly eerie and supernatural way of doing it.

As you have seen in the trailer above, it wasn't very surprising how Annie and Charlie somehow delved into the supernatural approach. Somehow, this "phenomenon" has been passed down from generations to generations.
***But up to what extent?*** Then, it's up to you to find out by watching the movie.

***SCARY*** isn't the word I'd use to describe this movie, but I'd say it's ***disturbing in an entertaining way***. The reason why I said so is that, their way of grieving for someone they have lost is quite relatable. Some people in real life are willing to take such measures just to talk to someone they love who has passed.
For people who are interested in Psychology and how people's minds work, this movie is for you. You'd see some instances and scenes which explain why the characters did what they've done.

The actors in this film also did pretty well in their roles. I can't imagine how taxing it must have been for them to immerse themselves to the characters' lives. It's mentally disturbing that I believe they'd need to have a mental break after filming this film.
As for the technical aspect, the video and sound effects were also pretty effective in adding the tension and bringing out the best in the movie.
This might not be my favorite, but it's among the ones I enjoyed the most. I love how it played with my mind. So if you're into this kind of films, then you should also give this one a try. It's a bit long, but it'll be worth it.
Enjoy and thanks for reading! See you around!

Amazing film, one of my favorite horror movies... Specially after that disturbing ending, it really stuck with me.

Tony Colette deserved the Oscar nomination at least 😭
