It was the night after my cousins and I visited my late uncle's wake last year when we decided to stay up and watch a horror film together. We originally do this at Christmas, but we weren't very sure whether we could spend Christmas together or not... which turned out the latter.
We decided to watch one of the horror films available on Netflix and it was entitled "The Curse of La Llorona".
The movie started with a flashback. It was showing a happy family. The youngest son was giving a present to his mother which she accepted gratefully with the promise of treasuring it forever. Later in the afternoon, the youngest son saw a horrific scene of his mother drowning his older brother in the river. When he noticed his mother's eyes watching him, he ran for his life, but unfortunately ended up like his brother.
Fast forward 300 years later, Anna,the main character and is a mother of two, was investigating another mother suspected of abusing her two sons. When she visited their house, they were found locked behind a door and with some burn marks on their wrists. With this, they arrested the mother and got custody of the boys. The weird thing is the boys told her that it would've been better if they were kept in that room. Later that night the boys died and their mother blamed Anna for their death and hoped that La Llorona would come after her children.
Anna was skeptical at first, but little did she know that her son Chris already had his encounter with La Llorona or the Weeping Woman. He daughter, Sam, also had her story to share with regards La Llorona. When Anna discovered about this, the chase began.

I'm sharing the trailer above and as you may have noticed, there are plenty of jump scares in this movie which is actually pretty exciting especially when I watched it with my aunt and cousins. I didn't only enjoy the jump scares but also their reactions. I usually just watch horror films alone, but it sure is enjoyable with other people especially when they're the chicken type.
Storywise, it was also good... maybe because of the flashback at the beginning, we were somehow able to understand the origin of the weeping woman. The transitions in the film from one scene to another was also quite good and entertaining.
The effects were nice. I didn't really find it that scary, but for my cousins, it was. Also, despite it being a horror film... and a sad one at that, there were some funny scenes that somehow makes you laugh and relax a bit before that next suspenseful one. I really like how they injected some humor in the story. My cousins and I really laughed at it especially that it came from a serious character who you'd never expect to be quite goofy. It was a breath of fresh air within the movie.
All in all, it was worth watching. I wouldn't say it was the best horror film *(since I'm not really a huge fan of curses and related stuff)*, but I like the humor in this film. In addition, my youngest cousin, Godwyn, finished the whole thing. He usually disappears in the middle of watching a horror film, but he sure did enjoyed this one. Though I'd still advice adults to not let watch this alone. ;) It might be traumatizing since the film involves kids.
I would actually watch this movie again if I get the chance. Well, to each their own. ^^
