Since I began to write reviews on movies and tv shows in this awesome communities I've just been focused on products of the western world. Why not? The movies from Hollywood are obviously great and probably the most popular in the industry. Well, for this review I decided to do things differently and talk about a show that was produced right here in the Nigerian movie industry, Nollywood. This show is a Netflix Mini Series called Blood Sisters.

Blood Sisters is a mini series that premiered on the 5th of May 2022. The show consists of just 4 episodes that run for an average of about 57 minutes per episode. When this show was released it was an instant hit in Nigeria. I heard a lot of good things from my friends about it. Even twitter critics said that the show was a good product especially with the fact that it came from our developing industry. All this hype surrounding this movie made me really want to see what awesome work our movie industry had done and so a few days ago, I finally got to see this show. Well, read ahead to learn a little bit more about Blood Sisters and some of my opinions on this mini series.

The Blood Sisters is a classic thriller story that is made up of elements of love, greed, envy, abuse, lies and murder with a lot of Nigerian cultural richness. The story is about two ladies, Sarah and Kemi, who are best friends and have stuck with each other other through thick and thin. These women are the kind of friends that would do literally anything for each other. In the beginning, their love for and dedication to one another is very admirable but when these ladies begin to make very bad decisions, we see just how dark close friendships can become.

In the beginning of the movie, we see that Sarah is to be married to a man, Kola, who comes from a wealthy family. Although rich, this family faces issues of abuse, envy, drug addiction, greed and other vices. Sarah, who is constantly abused by Kola, feels trapped in a relationship she does not want anything to do with. She does not want to get married to her abuser but she is conflicted because her family's business depends on his investment. With no one else to confide in, she turns to her best friend, Kemi, who encourages her to call off the wedding.

Just before the Igba Nkwu (Traditional wedding of the Igbo culture), Sarah tries to break things off with Kola but he loses it and becomes violent with her. As Kola tries to strangle his bride-to-be, her best friend intervenes, shooting Kola in the back and killing him. The two friends, panicking, clean up the crime scene and bury Kola's body hoping their deed would not be discovered.

After mysteriously disappearing from his own wedding and being declared missing for a few days, Kola's body is discovered with evidence linking Sarah and Kemi to his death. Facing a corrupt justice system and a very influential family, the best friends go on the run and are declared fugitives. With so much at stake, Sarah and Kemi's friendship is tested over and over again as they find themselves in difficult situations. It seems like the culprits were fully exposed but all is not what it seems with this case.

Will Sarah and Kemi be able to escape the long arm of the law? Will they kill again to help each other? What other lives are at stake as this story unravels? Check out Blood Sisters on Netflix and you'll get your answers!

It's really nice to see the entertainment business get better over here in Nigeria. Past products of the movie industry in particular have become subjects of a truckload of ridicule. It's always exciting to see projects that are accepted by the public because of how good they are.

Like I said earlier, Blood Sisters got a lot of hype when it was released. Everyone was talking about it and mentioning how awesome and different it is. Well, I have seen the show and right now I will drop some of my thoughts on it.

1. A good and rich storyline:

Compared to many other Nollywood products that leave viewers confused or annoyed with the same content, Blood Sisters had an awesome and unique storyline. As a lover of thrillers (especially the crime types) this show really impressed me with what went down and how it affected the lives of everyone involved. I like that the story didn't just focus on one or two protagonists but we were given an insight on other characters and how their lives are affected by a single tragedy.

This show explores several issues like domestic abuse, corruption, drug addiction, envy and so on. We see how the characters struggle with their vices and how most of their effects are heightened after the big tragedy in the first episode. We see that all these issues form a rollercoaster that eventually crashes with everyone onboard.

Before seeing Blood Sisters, I don't think I'd seen a Nigerian crime movie involving an actual investigation and detective. Well this movie has the classic hat-wearing detective that takes the murder of the victim to heart and tries to uncover what happened and why. I like that there is even a case and a chain of command to examine evidence and witnesses as they are are things we lack in reality over here.

2. The Plot Could have been better:

The story of this show is good but how it was told could have been better. For one, there is a "highly skilled" assassin hired to kill Kola but Kola is able to defend himself with some martial arts. Except for the fact that the scene looked kind of cool, there's really no reason for Kola to be able to fight like that. There is no backstory of him having any training in martial arts or the likes.

My biggest problem with the plot is that some climax scenes are not properly resolved. Some of these scenes just leave the viewer on edge and unsatisfied. For example, when the detective confronts his boss with corruption allegations you'd expect some sort of confrontation, right? Instead, we got absolutely nothing. That scene just closed.

There are other plot problems in the show that I want to mention but I might totally spoil it for those of you that haven't seen it yet.

3. Great acting:

Yes and yes on this. The lead actors in this show played their parts very well in the my opinion. The actresses of the two protagonists, Nancy Isime and Ini Dima-Okojie were a good fit as the Blood Sisters. They were able to complement each other perfectly to give the audience quite the show. Other actors played their roles really well too.

4. Good music and soundtracks:

I'm the type of person that hums to a soundtrack in a movie whether I know it or not and while watching Blood Sisters, I was humming away. The soundtracks and music used in certain scenes were a good fit for the scenes. Those of us that have experienced the evolution of Nollywood would confess to how off the music used to feel back in the day. Sometimes, we would even get to hear one song in every scene in the movie. It's great to see that our movie producers are learning how important music is in movies and getting better at placing awesome soundtracks in the right scenes. For this show, the soundtracks really capture the viewers and immerse them in the movie as it should be.

5. Cinematography, special effects and costumes:

The lighting used in this show was really good. What wasn't good though was the camera angle and movements. The poor camera movements made fight scenes look really fake and funny. There were even scenes where the camera was shaky which were really bad to watch.

On the part of special effects, makeup and costumes, I have to commend the producers of this movie. The special effects were really good and the costumes were even better. The costumes properly reflect major aspects of various Nigerian cultures. The makeup was great too with all the injuries and bruises looking very convincing.

6. Kill the forced accent!:

Watching Nollywood movies and hearing actors try to copy an American or British accent is almost always funny. Most of these things are not natural and so they make them sound awful. This happened in this movie with actors trying to speak in accents that they just aren't good with. These forced accents really made some dialogues very awkward to watch.

7. It could have ended better:

I don't know what other people think but this show did not end well in my opinion. The conflict was not resolved. The two protagonists were even sidelined in the end. There really should have been a resolution and a proper end to the story. With the fact that this is a mini series and would likely not have a sequel, we're just left hanging at the end of the show. I can's say much on this point without spoiling the series so I'll leave it this way

Ini Dima-Okojie plays the role of Sarah, the lady who is supposed to be married to a man that abuses her just because her family needs his money. Sarah is kind of frail and fragile. She is also clearly traumatized from everything she's been through. She hardly makes decisions without her best friend. Even though the conflict revolves around her the most, most times she feels like the sidekick. Sarah is one to want to do the right thing. Her courage is admirable but sometimes she's really annoying.

Nancy Isime plays the character of Sarah's best friend, Kemi. Kemi is the tough one between the friends. She is your typical example of a Lagos girl. Her character is bold and resilient. Kemi takes charge as she manages most of the risks for the pair. She is basically the leader because she makes most of the decisions and comes up with most of the plans. Kemi is a loyal friend that sticks by Sarah in the worst times and even when she gets very annoying.

Deyemi Okanlawon plays the role of Kola, the abusive fiancé that somehow knows some martial arts. From the show, it's clear that Kola suffers from some kind of mental illness because he just doesn't seem to be able to stop himself from hurting Sarah. He is ruthless, arrogant and very controlling.

And now for Inspector Jo. This character is played by the British Nigerian actor, Wale Ojo. Inspector Jo is an incorruptible detective that takes his cases too personal. He does not bow to corruption and isn't afraid to confront others on the topic. He is really smart and believes in true justice but sometimes he gets frustrated and harasses his suspects.

Kate Henshaw plays the character of Uduak Ademola, Kola's mother. I have to admit that her performance was one of the most powerful in the movie. Uduak is wealthy woman that thinks everyone else is beneath her. She loves and cares for her son Kola so much but she dislikes her other children. She even clearly explains to one of them how much she does not love her. After losing her son, her character is clearly a grieving and vengeful mother that is able to command the entire police force to do her bidding. If you think Kola is ruthless, just wait till you see his mother.

Other actors include

• Gabriel Afolayan as Femi, Kola's brother.

• Kehinde Bankole as Olayinka, Femi's wife.

• Genoveva Umeh as Timeyin, Kola's sister.

• Daniel Etim Effiong as Akin, Kola's bestfriend and best man.

If you love thriller movies then you should check this movie out. It's not so great but it's also not bad. The story is really good and the actors play their parts properly. The cinematography might not be the best but it will not bother an average viewer. If you're not Nigerian and decide to see this movie, please forgive our learning curve as it gets less steep. We're getting better every time.

I'll give Blood Sisters a rating of 7/10

Cuando se lanzó este programa, fue un éxito instantáneo en Nigeria. Escuché muchas cosas buenas de mis amigos al respecto. Incluso los críticos de Twitter dijeron que el programa era un buen producto, especialmente por el hecho de que procedía de nuestra industria en desarrollo. Toda esta exageración en torno a esta película hizo que realmente quisiera ver el increíble trabajo que había hecho nuestra industria cinematográfica, así que hace unos días, finalmente pude ver este programa. Bueno, sigue leyendo para aprender un poco más sobre Blood Sisters y algunas de mis opiniones sobre esta miniserie.

The Blood Sisters es una historia clásica de suspenso que se compone de elementos de amor, codicia, envidia, abuso, mentiras y asesinatos con mucha riqueza cultural nigeriana. La historia trata sobre dos mujeres, Sarah y Kemi, que son mejores amigas y se han unido en las buenas y en las malas. Estas mujeres son el tipo de amigas que harían literalmente cualquier cosa la una por la otra. Al principio, su amor y dedicación mutuos es muy admirable, pero cuando estas damas comienzan a tomar decisiones muy malas, vemos cuán oscuras pueden llegar a ser las amistades cercanas.

Al comienzo de la película, vemos que Sarah se va a casar con un hombre, Kola, que proviene de una familia adinerada. Aunque rica, esta familia enfrenta problemas de abuso, envidia, drogadicción, codicia y otros vicios. Sarah, de quien Kola abusa constantemente, se siente atrapada en una relación con la que no quiere tener nada que ver. Ella no quiere casarse con su abusador pero tiene un conflicto porque el negocio de su familia depende de su inversión. Sin nadie más en quien confiar, recurre a su mejor amiga, Kemi, quien la anima a cancelar la boda.

Justo antes de la Igba Nkwu (boda tradicional de la cultura igbo), Sarah intenta romper con Kola, pero él pierde el control y se vuelve violento con ella. Mientras Kola intenta estrangular a su futura novia, interviene su mejor amiga, le dispara a Kola por la espalda y lo mata. Los dos amigos, en pánico, limpian la escena del crimen y entierran el cuerpo de Kola con la esperanza de que no se descubra su hecho.

Después de desaparecer misteriosamente de su propia boda y ser declarado desaparecido durante unos días, se descubre el cuerpo de Kola con pruebas que vinculan a Sarah y Kemi con su muerte. Ante un sistema de justicia corrupto y una familia muy influyente, los mejores amigos se dan a la fuga y son declarados prófugos. Es muy agradable ver que el negocio del entretenimiento mejora aquí en Nigeria. Los productos anteriores de la industria del cine en particular se han convertido en objeto de un montón de burlas. Siempre es emocionante ver proyectos que son aceptados por el público por lo buenos que son.

Como dije antes, Blood Sisters recibió mucha publicidad cuando se lanzó. Todo el mundo hablaba de ello y mencionaba lo increíble y diferente que es. Bueno, he visto el programa y ahora dejaré algunos de mis pensamientos al respecto.

1. Una historia buena y rica:

En comparación con muchos otros productos de Nollywood que dejan al espectador Ya sea confundido o molesto con el mismo contenido, Blood Sisters tenía una historia increíble y única. Como amante de los thrillers (especialmente los de tipo criminal), este programa realmente me impresionó con lo que sucedió y cómo afectó la vida de todos los involucrados. Me gusta que la historia no se centre solo en uno o dos protagonistas, sino que se nos dé una idea de otros personajes y de cómo sus vidas se ven afectadas por una sola tragedia.

Este programa explora varios temas como el abuso doméstico, la corrupción, la drogadicción, la envidia, etc. Vemos cómo los personajes luchan con sus vicios y cómo la mayoría de sus efectos se intensifican después de la gran tragedia del primer episodio. Vemos que todos estos problemas forman una montaña rusa que finalmente choca con todos a bordo.

Antes de ver Blood Sisters, creo que no había visto una película policial nigeriana que involucrara una investigación real y un detective. Bueno, esta película tiene al clásico detective con sombrero que se toma en serio el asesinato de la víctima e intenta descubrir qué sucedió y por qué. Me gusta que incluso haya un caso y una cadena de mando para examinar pruebas y testigos, ya que son cosas que en realidad nos faltan aquí.

2. La trama podría haber sido mejor:

La historia de este programa es buena, pero la forma en que se contó podría haber sido mejor. Por un lado, hay un asesino "altamente calificado" contratado para matar a Kola, pero Kola puede defenderse con algunas artes marciales. Excepto por el hecho de que la escena se veía genial, realmente no hay razón para que Kola pueda pelear así. No hay antecedentes de que él tenga ningún entrenamiento en artes marciales o similares.

Mi mayor problema con la trama es que algunas escenas culminantes no se resuelven correctamente. Algunas de estas escenas simplemente dejan al espectador nervioso e insatisfecho. Por ejemplo, cuando el detective confronta a su jefe con acusaciones de corrupción, usted esperaría algún tipo de confrontación, ¿no? En cambio, no obtuvimos absolutamente nada. Esa escena acaba de cerrarse.

Hay otros problemas de trama en el programa que quiero mencionar, pero podría estropearlo por completo para aquellos de ustedes que aún no lo han visto.

3. Gran actuación:

Sí y sí en esto. En mi opinión, los actores principales de este espectáculo desempeñaron muy bien sus papeles. Las actrices de las dos protagonistas, Nancy Isime e Ini Dima-Okojie encajaban bien como las Blood Sisters. Fueron capaces de complementarse perfectamente para darle a la audiencia todo el espectáculo. Otros actores también interpretaron muy bien sus papeles.

4. Buena música y bandas sonoras:

Soy el tipo de persona que tararea la banda sonora de una película, lo sepa o no, y mientras miraba Blood Sisters, estaba tarareando. Las bandas sonoras y la música utilizadas en ciertas escenas encajaban bien con las escenas. Aquellos de nosotros que hemos experimentado la evolución de Nollywood confesaremos lo extraña que solía sentirse la música en el pasado. A veces, incluso escuchábamos una canción en cada escena de la película. Es genial ver que nuestros productores de películas están aprendiendo lo importante que es la música en las películas y están mejorando en la colocación de bandas sonoras increíbles en las escenas correctas. Para este espectáculo, las bandas sonoras realmente capturan a los espectadores y los sumergen en la película como debe ser.

5. Fotografía, efectos especiales y vestuario:

La iluminación utilizada en este espectáculo fue realmente buena. Sin embargo, lo que no fue bueno fue el ángulo de la cámara y los movimientos. Los movimientos deficientes de la cámara hicieron que las escenas de lucha parecieran realmente falsas y divertidas. Incluso hubo escenas en las que la cámara temblaba que eran realmente malas de ver.

Por parte de los efectos especiales, maquillaje y vestuario, tengo que felicitar a los productores de esta película. Los efectos especiales fueron realmente buenos y el vestuario aún mejor. Los trajes reflejan adecuadamente los principales aspectos de varias culturas nigerianas. El maquillaje también fue genial con todas las lesiones y moretones que se veían muy convincentes.

6. ¡Mata el acento forzado! :

Ver películas de Nollywood y escuchar a los actores tratar de copiar un acento estadounidense o británico casi siempre es divertido. La mayoría de estas cosas no son naturales y las hacen sonar horrible. Esto sucedió en esta película con actores tratando de hablar con acentos que simplemente no son buenos. Estos acentos forzados realmente hicieron que algunos diálogos fueran muy incómodos de ver.

7. Podría haber terminado mejor:

No sé lo que piensan otras personas, pero este programa no terminó bien en mi opinión. El conflicto no se resolvió. Los dos protagonistas fueron incluso dejados de lado al final. Realmente debería haber habido una resolución y un final adecuado para la historia. Con el hecho de que esta es una miniserie y probablemente no tenga una secuela, nos quedamos esperando al final del programa. Puedo decir mucho sobre este punto sin estropear la serie, así que lo dejaré así.

Ini Dima-Okojie interpreta el papel de Sarah, la dama que se supone que está casada con un hombre que abusa de ella solo porque su familia necesita su dinero. Sarah es un poco frágil y frágil. También está claramente traumatizada por todo lo que ha pasado. Difícilmente toma decisiones sin su mejor amiga. Aunque el conflicto gira principalmente en torno a ella, la mayoría de las veces se siente como la compañera. Sarah es alguien que quiere hacer lo correcto. Su coraje es admirable, pero a veces es realmente molesta.

Nancy Isime interpreta el personaje de la mejor amiga de Sarah, Kemi. Kemi es el duro entre los amigos. Ella es el ejemplo típico de una chica de Lagos. Su carácter es audaz y resistente. Kemi se hace cargo ya que gestiona la mayoría de los riesgos para la pareja. Ella es básicamente la líder porque toma la mayoría de las decisiones y elabora la mayoría de los planes. Kemi es una amiga leal que se queda con Sarah en los peores momentos e incluso cuando se pone muy molesta.

Deyemi Okanlawon interpreta el papel de Kola, la prometida abusiva que de alguna manera sabe algo de artes marciales. Del programa, está claro que Kola sufre algún tipo de enfermedad mental porque simplemente no parece poder evitar lastimar a Sarah. Es despiadado, arrogante y muy controlador.

Y ahora para Inspector Jo. Este personaje es interpretado por el actor británico nigeriano Wale Ojo. El inspector Jo es un detective incorruptible que se toma sus casos de manera demasiado personal. No se inclina ante la corrupción y no tiene miedo de confrontar a otros sobre el tema. Es muy inteligente y cree en la verdadera justicia, pero a veces se frustra y acosa a sus sospechosos.

Kate Henshaw interpreta el personaje de Uduak Ademola, la madre de Kola. Debo admitir que su actuación fue una de las más poderosas de la película. Uduak es una mujer rica que piensa que todos los demás están por debajo de ella. Ella ama y se preocupa mucho por su hijo Kola, pero no le gustan sus otros hijos. Incluso le explica claramente a uno de ellos cuánto no la ama. Después de perder a su hijo, su personaje es claramente una madre afligida y vengativa que puede ordenar a toda la fuerza policial que cumpla sus órdenes. Si crees que Kola es despiadado, espera a ver a su madre.

Si te gustan las películas de suspenso, deberías ver esta película. No es tan bueno, pero tampoco está mal. La historia es muy buena y los actores interpretan correctamente sus papeles. La cinematografía puede no ser la mejor, pero no molestará a un espectador promedio. Si no es nigeriano y decide ver esta película, perdone nuestra curva de aprendizaje, ya que se vuelve menos empinada. Estamos mejorando cada vez.

Le daré a Blood Sisters una calificación de 7/10
