Hey there movies and tv shows lovers! I have not made a post in the community for a while because of exams and other time consuming uni stuff. I have not had time to watch many movies or even do other fun stuff. Actually, I was done with the semester about two weeks ago but I had to take some time to relax and relearn how to blog. Oh well, here I am with another review. I hope you like it! :)
Enola Holmes 2 is a movie that was released way back in November but I just saw it recently. When this movie was still in the works I did not hear quite much about it. Even after it was released there was not so much hype around it. That was odd to me because I really enjoyed the first movie back in 2020 and expected the second to be just as good or even better. For some reason, I even totally forgot about the film until somedays back.
So yeah, I finally saw Enola Holmes 2 and I'm here to tell you if it was worth my time at all so you can know if you want to see it in case you haven't yet. Stay with me, will ya...

My favorite genre just before horror has to be mystery. I never pass the chance to see any movie that promises to have a good suspense element. If a movie belongs purely to the Mystery and Crime genre, it instantly attracts me and I just cannot resist it. For this reason, I am really looking forward to seeing "Glass Onion" which has just been released on Netflix but more on that some other time. Let's focus on today's movie.
Enola Holmes initially presents us with the mystery of a missing girl but it eventually gets deeper than that. It starts off simple but then evolves into a case of corruption, conspiracy and murder involving more characters than initially expected. The unraveling of the entire mystery was genius to me and the elements used to aid this unraveling were properly used. I loved how sketches and drawings were used to represent the missing girl and show us her activities while making her more mysterious. Similarly, I loved how images and characters were manipulated to give clues to the bigger picture of the entire thing.
It's not everyday you get to experience the joy of a good mystery especially one with the great Sherlock Holmes. I claim to be a mystery fan but ironically I have not seen many movies containing this character. Sure, everyone knows Sherlock Holmes and has seen a movie or two about him but I personally have not seen many. Again, I don't really recall how the first part of this film went down. So, seeing this part was really a perfect chance to experience the skills of the great Sherlock. I have to admit that the portrayal of the character was wonderful. I enjoyed seeing him work out the mystery behind the evidence he gathers from a crime scene. He was like a magician and even better with his sister, Enola, beside him.

The crime fighting sibling duo was brought to life by the efforts of Henry Cavill and Millie Bobby Brown. Henry Cavill is an actor that I admire very strongly. Honestly, those two have one of the worst young love story ever. The characters behaved poorly towards each other and their love was pretty cringeworthy. Some other people may say that Enola and Tewkesbury were cute together but to me they were just meh.
Speaking of the Holmes siblings, while watching this film I could not help but wonder what happened to the third sibling, Mycroft Holmes. This character was important in the first part but in this second movie he was not given a spotlight. Sure, it did not affect the story or anything like that but it would have been nice to have gotten a little story of what he was up to. Some improvisation to the story to accommodate Mycroft would have really been appreciated. Rather, he was never even mentioned and it was like he never existed. Bummer.

I loved the mystery part of the film but the action part was pretty laughable. The fight scenes were very poorly choreographed and not intense at all. Honestly, I was never looking forward to any fight scene and when it got to one, I could not wait for it to end. There should have been more effort put into the action as there was in the mystery. I hope that gets fixed in a future installment.
Probably the best part of this film for me is that they were able to give us a some history, albeit with a lot of fictional add-ons. Once I heard the name Sarah Chapman and how she was a Matchgirl, I recalled the story my chemistry teacher told the class some time in highschool about white phosphorus and red phosphorus. I'm not very good at history but I know that white phosphorus was not good and Sarah Chapman led some type of Matchgirls' strike that forced the change of their working conditions (I think). Seeing this piece of history sort of explained around a totally different story with fictional characters was awesome. A remarkable work of creativity indeed.

Enola Holmes has captured our hearts since the first movie in 2020. I really think that if you are considering watching the second movie, you should really start with the first one. It would make more sense that way.
The second part of the movie has some pretty good mystery even though some things were expected. Nevertheless, the movie is a great watch and I would recommend it to everyone. Just don't expect great fight scenes.
