In the last post I made for the Favorite Actor contest I mentioned that my favorite actress is Colby Minifie. I also briefly mentioned the movie "I'm Thinking of Ending Things" is a movie that she starred in and that I wanted to see it. Well, excited to see Minifie perform I finally saw the movie and I'm here to give my totally amateur review on it.
Before I talk about the plot I have to mention that this movie is branded as a horror film. This made me even more excited to see the film because horror is one of my favorite movie genres. With the horror format on my mind, I expected the film to be the usual classic tale with a straightforward storyline but I was about to get shocked. Brace yourself in as you keep reading because nothing is really as it seems with "I'm Thinking of Ending Things".

The story starts out as a simple one of a young woman who wants to end things with her boyfriend, Jake, but does not know how to go about it. Despite the sheer awkwardness of their relationship, the young woman goes with Jake to visit his parents for the first time. In between, we see scenes of an elderly janitor whose world seems to be unrelated to the couples' at first.
When the couple get to their destination, they meet Jake's weird but lovely parents who are referred to as Father and Mother. Gradually, we see a very weird family dynamic as things get stranger and stranger. The young woman discovers and experiences things that defy logic and she decides that she wants return home but that will not be easy.
Will the young woman be able to return home? Will she finally end things with Jake? What the heck is even going on?

"I'm Thinking of Ending Things" is a movie like nothing I have ever seen before. I jumped onto the film with the hope of seeing some regular horror elements, maybe not totally cliché but normal for what anybody would consider as horror. I was expecting to get the kind of jump I normally experience with horror films after a tedious day but I was so unprepared for the way this film would be that I had to watch it in three sittings, falling asleep in two of those.
Firstly, this movie is really slow-paced so it most likely would not be appreciated by people who prefer fast-paced quick-scened movies. The dialogues last very long and go into the details of several topics. You can literally watch two people talking for over 20 minutes which may sound a lot but that's the thing about movies like this - every word said in those conversations matter.
This is a movie that you will watch and ask yourself "what did I just watch?" especially if you try to approach the story like a regular film. There is nothing regular about this film but I did not know that initially. I got to learn that the directing style of the man behind the works, Charlie Kaufman, is very unique where a story is not presented as a whole but in little bits scattered all over the film. Every scene and detail in this film matters that if you so much as blink you may just miss something important.

I've had the opportunity to see many types of movies in my lifetime but nothing like this one. The movie is not a full on horror film because it takes us into the mess which is the human mind. The narrative style and the approach of the plot were really interesting to me. We see the thoughts of one person being presented in another's point of view. The plot of the movie is like no horror movie that I have seen before so I may just categorize this as a psychological thriller.
At first, the young woman seems to be a simple character but then over the course of the movie her name changes multiple times. Even her field of study and face change causing her to briefly question who she is. Still, she easily accepts the changes and moves on making the story even stranger.
Really, this is a movie I would consider as artistic and daring. I'm sure that the producers knew that the film would not be accepted so easily but they went ahead with it, breaking most rules of the modern movie making formats. Even the aspect ratio of the movie is different from what we see in many movies today. Every single elements leaves an impression on the viewer which is something a good film should do.

I decided to see this film because of the appearance of Colby Minifie but she did not get a lot of screen time. Still, I was not disappointed because those that had a lot of screen time did really well.
Nobody likes to watch characters with an awkward chemistry unless the awkwardness is intended. For this movie, the awkwardness was absolutely intended and it was portrayed properly by the characters of the young woman and Jake. The young woman clearly wants to end the weird relationship with her very weird boyfriend but she does not know how to do so. It's clear that the relationship does not have that "spark" as the young woman tries to simply tolerate Jake and Jake tries to keep her interested. The relationship is cringey to watch but in a good way. A lot of people don't realize how difficult it is to portray an awkward relationship as it is to portray a good one. When an awkward relationship is done wrong, the awkwardness just becomes awkward and the movie turns out to be a confusing piece of work.
Of course I cannot talk about good characters if I don't mention their actors. Jessie Buckley is the amazing woman behind the character of the young woman who's character gives a voice to the story. On the trip with Jake, her character experiences things that cause her question even her own existence. Buckley did a very convincing work with her character who is an obvious nerd that is confused about everything yet seems to be accepting to the strangeness.
Jesse Plemons plays Jake, the odd boyfriend with a weird family. Jake is smart guy but the guy is nothing short of a weirdo. The characters seems charming at first but he gradually becomes the opposite. Jesse Plemons does a wonderful job bringing this character to life.

Well, I don't know if you would like to watch this movie. It has a lot of complex stuff in it that just require you to stop, sit and think about it. Honestly, I have gone through the movie a couple more times and I still don't understand somethings. The good thing though is that the more you understand it, the more you appreciate the artistic nature of it all.
If you decide to see this movie, don't jump into it expecting a straightforward story. Also, don't watch this movie if you are sleepy or tired because it is very slow-paced and you will miss many details. Keep a very open mind because you will question what exactly the story has to offer. It may not make much sense in the beginning but just give it a try and you will love it.
