Ambitions - everybody has them. Everybody has a dream or goal that they strongly want to achieve. It's admirable to see someone working their socks off to get something they really desire but is it always worth it? Many people work so hard to have the life they want that they often forget to actually live. Sometimes a person's ambitions may be towards the people they love but they end up unknowingly cause these people more harm than good. An example is a father who works long hours everyday to give his family the perfect life but misses out on their lives. He loves them and wants the best for them but he is never around for the really important things. Is the sacrifice worth it?
I can relate to the whole ambition problem. Starting my journey for financial freedom as a teenager, I wanted to have the life my parents could not provide so badly that I stopped living. I wasn't present for birthdays and holidays. I stopped going to college parties and even showed disinterest in romantic relationships believing they were a waste of time and money. For a while it was all good until I began to realize that I was really unhappy. There was no essence to my life and so I had to change.
Why am I saying all this?
Well, these feelings were triggered while I watched Lightyear. Lightyear is an animated movie that serves as a prequel to the famous Toy Story movie series. Follow me through this review so you can understand why the movie triggered the feelings in me.

I really love animations and would gladly watch any that is presented to me. I've seen tons of animated movies but I never really followed Toy Story. The only Toy Story movie I watched fully was part 4 and I really liked it. As for the other Toy Story movies, I watched them in patches without paying so much attention. Still, I can remember a little about the character of Buzz. I remember that he was the latest toy at some point and he believed he was an actual space ranger. I remember how much he believed he could actually fly and how much I wanted him to but both of us always got disappointed. I think some people can relate to my thought and agree that it was exciting to hear that we would finally see Buzz Lightyear be the hero he was always meant to be.
Lightyear presents Buzz in a way many of us 90s and 2000s kids hoped he would be - a hero with actual combat experience. Like any other character though, this hero is far from perfect. I like the approach of an overambitious hero with the weight of the world on his shoulders. To his people, Buzz is a hero and something of a legend. For sure he is a really good space ranger but he puts his mission first neglecting the most important resource ever - Time.
Something that really stuck with me in this movie was how Buzz kept saying that space rangers "always complete the mission". This really showed that overambitious trait that many of us can relate to. When he was asked the question "at what cost?", I took the question very personal. How far would you be willing to go to get what you want? What would you be willing to sacrifice?

While he was busy feeling guilty and trying to fix his "mistake", his people were adapting, falling in love, building families and making memories. Buzz had the best interest for his people but naturally people forgot about him and his mission and just lived. The wake up call came very late for Buzz when the life he knew was all gone and it was clear that his efforts were for nothing. Of course Buzz accepted his reality in the end but I felt very sad for him.
Lightyear sure comes with a very important message and an emotional story but I don't think it's a film I'd like to see again. If this was Andy's favorite film, I'm going to have to question the kid's taste. Sure the movie starts off really well with some funny lines but it gradually became very boring. I think what made it boring for me was how repetitive it became and how dry the dialogues turned out to be. There were funny dialogues in the beginning but at some point that vibe just dies. I can't even count the number of times I almost fell asleep watching this film.
Another thing that made me not really like this film was how the characters, except Buzz and maybe Sox, were totally unmemorable. There are a number of characters introduced in this film that just end up being totally sidelined. I understand that there was a need for new characters because of the film dynamics but I don't think it was the best approach. There was really not a lot of character development and so most of the characters felt plain. In the end, the people that turned out to be the heroes just felt like a bunch of randoms that I had absolutely no connection to. This greatly reduced the emotional impact the characters were supposed to have on me because I really felt nothing.

Ok so Buzz's friend Commander Hawthorne is a lesbian and she eventually gets married. That's cool but the thing is that at some point she gets pregnant and gives birth. Was there a donor involved? Was it some sort of futuristic solution that helps gay women with this? Well, just like you, I have no idea because we were never told. Another thing that didn't make total sense for me was the story of elderly Buzz. So basically this older Buzz has lived a longer life than our Buzz and has a plan for how to get the people home. The thing that doesn't make sense to me is how he stumbled on the tech he was using. I guess you can say I'm just being overly critical but the whole situation is way too random to ignore.
There may have been some problems in the plot but there were good things too. For one, the animation of this film is just clear and awesome. I love the fine details from the sweat to dirt on the skin and even bruises and cuts. It's really cool to see animations getting better as the years go by. Of course we can always trust Pixar to deliver awesome animations.
I also really liked the film score that was used almost throughout the movie. From the beginning we were made to know that the movie was Andy's favorite movie and it was believable thanks to the score. This sound had some really old progressions that really made the movie sound like it was made in the 90s. The score was also fitting for the typical heroic adventure story. Honestly it reminded me of the superman cartoon series I used to watch as a kid.
