Many of us MCU fans must have probably heard about and/or seen Marvel and Sony's new movie titled Morbius. This movie, which was released back in April, sparked a lot of interests in fans especially when the trailers were released. A lot of people, like me, really wanted to see how the crew would be able to make a movie adaptation of this old comic character. Also, for those of us interested in Sony's Spider-Man Universe (SSU), this movie was really important for us to see if Sony would be able to match up to the entire story of Marvel's legendary Avengers with characters that would potentially be part of a grander story.
The first time I saw a trailer of Morbius was probably back in January. That was when I figured out that we were finally going to get this movie that we had waited so long for. I really wanted to see how Sony would develop the character of a spiderverse villain like they did with venom. For some reason though, I forgot the release date (and month) and didn't know the movie was even out for over a month. When I learned that the movie was out and had been for over a month, I hurried to check it out and I have to say, it's not what I expected.
If you are an MCU fan, a horror lover or just someone that's into vampires and all that, then you might be interested in this review. Stay with me as I write a thing or two about Sony's work on the movie, Morbius.
So basically, this movie is about a man named Michael Morbius who was born with a Bloodborne disease that cripples him. He cannot walk properly and needs a lot of care which is why for most parts of his childhood, he is raised in some sort of foster care home. It is at this foster home that he meets Lucian (aka Milo) and they become best of friends. After an incident, Morbius' caregivers discover that he is basically a boy genius and so they send him to a top school.
Fast forward 25 years later, Dr. Michael Morbius is a Nobel prize winning top expert in bloodborne diseases. He is successful but his condition is deteriorating quickly. Desperate for a cure for him and Milo, Morbius starts to experiment with bat DNA. After many trials, he is successful in his experiments. He finally takes the next step by splicing his DNA with bat DNA. The process is successful and he is cured but there are unexpected side effects. Get this, the bat DNA causes Morbius to crave blood essentially turning him into a vampire - A Living Vampire.
Now a vampire, Morbius has superhuman abilities like superspeed, superstrength, echolocation (I call them goosebumpsy ears), some sort of flight ability, a "kinship" with bats and so on. On the bad side, he develops an insatiable thirst for human blood and feeds on people. He decides that the cure is dangerous and refuses to give it to his best friend, Milo. Milo does not see things Morbius' way and decides to take the cure anyway.
Now that both friends are vampires, they have different views of the situation. Morbius believes they can live without human blood but Milo, who probably feels like life had always cheated him, decides he could do whatever he wants as a vampire. As Milo goes on a terror rampage, Morbius is forced to stop him before it's too late.
Will Morbius be able to stop Milo? Will he be able to take his best friend down when the time comes? Or will the friends reconcile? As usual, go watch the movie and find out! :)
At the beginning of this post, I mentioned that this movie was not what I expected. Well, it really wasn't. In a nutshell, Morbius is really not a good movie. Except for the fact that I expected something cool to be done with this awesome character and my expectations were kind of high, the movie was generally awful. I really like to give movie crews a chance before I criticize them. It takes a lot for a movie to annoy me so trust me when I say that this one, just didn't cut it.
Before I start to explain why this movie was not so awesome, I have to mention that the backstory of Dr. Michael Morbius is really cool. Morbius is called The Living Vampire because, unlike most vampires, he did not die and comeback with fangs rather he became a vampire in the lab. Science made him a vampire while he was still alive. This backstory is awesome. Combining a supernatural concept like vampirism with science and the story behind it is really what made me love the Morbius character.
Now, taking villain characters from the Spider-Man universe and making them protagonists in their own movie has been criticized by many people since Venom in 2018. Although venom was much more successful than many people expected and made Sony's Spider-Man Universe look like it was a good idea, this terrible work done in Morbius has really had me thinking otherwise.
First of all, the plot of this movie is really bad. If you watch the trailer, you will notice that the movie is really different from the trailer. Given how long this movie was delayed, it's clear that there were a couple of reshoots along the way but after the final piece it still feels like the producers didn't really know what they wanted this movie to be about. Don't get me wrong, the movie had a good plot in the beginning but after Morbius treats himself and becomes a vampire, the plot basically collapses on itself. Things start to happen just because. It feels like the movie was rushed and so there wasn't enough time to develop the entire plot.
Right from when the FBI got involved, they were quick to realize that they were dealing with a vampire and were totally ok with it like it was normal. They even question him and throw him in your everyday cell with no extra precaution. When Morbius and Milo butt heads on the streets, people weren't even concerned in the least but just gave way to them like they were immature teenagers. I guess it's everyday you see a vampire in the Sony universe.
Morbius started out with the horror vibe which was good because of the whole vampire idea. The color of the movie is actually not bad for a horror type of movie and the initial feel was really cool. Sadly, when we were supposed to see the actual horrific acts of vampires, it just became disappointing. I think anyone seeing a vampire movie should be prepared to see some blood if not a lot. However, in Morbius there was virtually no blood. You can hear the gore in the movie but you can't see it and apparently their explanation is that the bodies had all their blood drained out.
Still on the horror and terror topic, there is a scene when Morbius goes all fangs out on a guy and says, "I am Venom" which, in all honesty, made me cringe. It was just laughable.
Now the biggest flaw for me in this movie is that many things went unexplained. It's obvious that Milo stole the cure and took it but the question is how. I'm not an expert but I believe DNA splicing isn't a simple process. When Morbius was undergoing the process, he hooked himself up to a bunch of stuff and the other doctor, Martine, helped him out. Milo isn't a doctor in anyway so I don't think he would be able to do all the necessary stuff for the procedure to work. We weren't even shown how he turned himself. One scene he was ill and the next he wasn't.
Also, Morbius felt a "kinship" with the bats but, for some unexplained reason, Milo didn't. At some point, Morbius was basically bat bending on Milo.
Another thing I really need to mention is that there was a sick little girl who looked like she would be important in this movie but wasn't in the end. Doctor Morbius was clearly fond of this girl, whose name is Anna, as we could see him show concern for her a lot. Sadly, she was not of any relevance to the plot of the movie and it made her character kind of underdeveloped.
A story isn't complete without an element of romance right? Well in Morbius, the love element is not wonderful. At first, there really isn't that much of an indication that Morbius and Martine would be lovers but eventually they were which is ok. However, when they get to what I guess was the peak of their romance, it was just awful to watch.
There are a lot of things I want to say that would totally spoil the movie (I've done a lot of damage already) but I will say this; the post credit scenes of the movie really should have been worked on a little more. It's obvious that Morbius is a part of the SSU so connecting it to other stories should have been done in a better way.
OK, I have to admit that the special effects used in the movie were not so bad. Even though most of the fight scenes were clouded with CGI, I think the team did a good job in that aspect.
Meet Dr. Michael Morbius everyone! Jared Leto plays the role of this protagonist. I don't know if he did a good job with the character with the state of the movie, but his performance is not so bad. Morbius is a genius with a little bit of dark humor in him. Even though he's really smart, he's not the overly serious type as he spark a little fun into the already damaged plot.
Morbius' best friend, Milo, is played by Matt Smith. Now I think this guy did a good job with his role. Although best friends, Milo and Morbius are very different. Milo is not really an upstanding person. His personality is really arrogant as he doesn't really care who he hurts to get what he wants. I think he's got a mix of Damon Salvatore and Elijah vibe.
Adria Arjona plays the role of Martine, Morbius' assistant doctor and lover. Martine strikes me as conservative and daring at the same time. Although she questions Morbius' agenda most times, she does what she can to help him out. Again, I can't tell if this character was represented properly by Adria so I'll leave it at that.
Tyrese Gibson plays the role of Agent Shroud, the FBI who was in charge of tracking Morbius. Agent Shroud is like your typical fed character. He is really serious and never smiles, not even for a second. He is resilient and doesn't let anything get in his way of getting his guy, even if his guy is a blood sucking nightcrawler. Now everyone loves Gibson but this role isn't his best work. I really think someone else could have done a better job than Gibson did with Agent Shroud.
Last in my list but definitely not the least is Al Madrigal. He plays the role of Agent Rodriguez, Shroud's partner. This guy isn't overly serious like Shroud rather he finds opportunities to chip in a little bit of comedy in the story. He's the one who figured out that they would be chasing a vampire but his realization was just too sudden.
I have already mentioned that Morbius has a unique backstory of vampires and blood with a lot of science but this movie was a disaster. Seeing it made me miss Blade so much to be honest. It really just feels like the story was mashed into itself and there wasn't really time for everything. With this type of movie, I don't think Sony's plans for it's SSU would be so much of a success. It's funny that some critics are calling it "More BS" instead.
I don't score movies normally but I think I'm going to be doing that from today. For this movie, I give it a score of 3/10 just because I love Spider-Man.
If you're interested in the SSU, then I suggest you see this movie so that you can follow the story. Otherwise, I wouldn't bother checking this movie out. Trust me you'd be better off rewatching Blade.
