Who wouldn't want to just let go of all their responsibilities and return to that childhood state of blissful ignorance? Life is way less complicated when you are a kid but at the same time it is very risky. Just being a kid makes you vulnerable to really bad people who are ok with taking advantage of that blissful ignorance and perceived weakness for their own sick pleasures.

As a naive little kid, I used to believe that the world was a great place filled with just really good and kindhearted people. I don't know if it was because of the many cartoons I used to watch or that's just the way kids are. Of course my parents always taught me never to talk to strangers and I followed the instruction without really understanding why. One time I even accepted corn offered to me by someone and my dad punished me for that. Back then I was sad and confused but now I know that there are some really sick individuals in the world and as a child I could have easily been a victim of one of them.
"The Black Phone" gives us a glimpse of the horrors kids face in the society. The movie deals with teenagers and not little kids but that doesn't change the narrative. Teenagers are still really naive and vulnerable in a lot of ways. Let's just get right into today's business...

Speaking of not taking things lightly, the setting of the movie was also very nice. The toxic environment that the kids lived in was adequately stressed. From the home to the school premises, life was not great for these kids. The trauma of living with an abusive alcoholic for a dad was already bad enough but Finney still had problems with bullies at school. I liked that they showed how dangerous, violent and bloody bullying could get. Not every movie would show you a kid with blood pouring out of his head after getting hit by a rock!

Thankfully, the chemistry gets really good as the movie goes on. Two characters that never felt awkward together, though, were Finn and Gwen.
Speaking of the Shaw siblings, the kids were powerful characters in the movie. Finney was played by Mason Thames who gives the character a very charming personality. It was really scary and interesting to see this kid as the main focus of the story. I liked the buildup of this character from a scared little boy to a survivor. If I got abducted and had to kill a man after seeing him brutally murder someone else, I’m pretty sure I would be really messed up in the head.
