As usual, today I am going to talk about a movie that I saw very recently. This movie, The Forever Purge, is one that belongs to the very popular The Purge franchise. I have had this movie in my list since last year but I have been skipping it over and over again for no actual reason. Yesterday, I finally decided that I would check it out and so I did.
Prior to seeing this movie, I had seen just one purge movie in 2018. That movie was titled The First Purge and apparently it was supposed to tell the story of how the purge began. I have not seen any other movies or shows under the franchise except for a small part of The Purge: Election Year so I can't really compare them to The Forever Purge. Still, I did some reading online to bring myself up to speed with the story.
Now, let's talk about The Forever Purge...

The story is set in the year 2048, 8 years following the events that happened in The Purge: Election Year. The number of illegal immigrants have rapidly grown in the United States and a lot of people are not happy about that. After what seems like two tenures of the anti-purge party serving, the New Founding Fathers of America (NFFA) are voted back into power and they immediately reinstate the formerly repealed Purge - an annual event where every crime, including murder, is made legal for 12 hours.
As tensions mount in the movie, we meet Juan and his wife, Adela, who are Mexican immigrants about to experience their first purge. We also meet the American family, The Tuckers, and in particular, Dylan Tucker, who has some really questionable beliefs and ideologies. Juan and Adela, with a group of foreigners, pay for extra security during the purge night. The Tuckers secure their home as well. During the 12 hours of the Purge, those who don't want to participate try their best to stay safe until the siren goes off nationwide and it's all over. Or so the thought.
As America wakes from the nightmare of the previous 12 hours, she has no idea that a longer nightmare awaits her. Mounting tensions surrounding the socio-economic divide and hate in the country are about to boil over. As our protagonists try to resume their lives, they quickly learn that many citizens have not stopped the purge after the siren had gone off. These people, who call themselves Ever Purgers, begin a nationwide uproar targeting mostly the upper class and other races. Their mission is to "make America great again". The Forever Purge begins.

The Forever Purge deals with the very sensitive concepts of racism, prejudice and and nazism. I wasn't sure if I wanted to do a review on this movie because of how sensitive these topics are. So, going forward, I will be extra careful with the words I choose.
I think it's good that this movie centers on a rapidly growing problem in the modern society. The other movies of The Purge franchise are a classic all-man-for-himself type of productions but this one really takes the cake for striking a nerve or two. We all know that the types of scenarios in this movie will likely never happen in a logical society. That's why this is fiction. Still, to feel a story better, I like to imagine that the fiction was a reality.
What if you wake up tomorrow and they just passed a bill for an annual purge in your country? Who can even stop them? Many will protest but there will always be sick criminals in the society. There are even people who look ok but deep down they want to stab a person or two. In this movie they keep saying "all crimes, including murder, are legal". This is to kind of make us focus a little bit more on murder but if you think of it, there are other really awful crimes people commit. An example of such crimes are hate crimes.

This is a movie that would get you really angry as is intended even in the midst of many unrealistic events. The terms used by the oppressors were properly chosen to really displease the viewer. You just get a glimpse of how shitty and insane people can get. Even some "neutral" media broadcasts were very questionable. You will even feel worse when they begin to show the oppressors carrying nazi symbols and flags.
With all these elements, it gets clear very quickly what type of message the movie tries to pass. The NFFA thought they could use the Purge as a political tool to control population and maybe fix the country's debt problem. They thought they could control people by making them believe that it was a way for them to relieve their aggression but you can't control hate like that. Over the years they had empowered hate and let it grow like a tumor eating away the life of the country. They had created the right atmosphere for hate groups like the nazis and white supremacists to thrive. In this story, no one is safe, not even the NFFA.

Something that I really appreciate in movies is great sounds and, although the sounds in Forever Purge weren't so great, they were good in my opinion. I like the fact that the movie tries to keep its background sounds consistent. I like how the music changed from a tense one when they were trying to get into the US to a short cowboy upbeat and back to mostly tense throughout the movie. You could feel the imminent danger. I don't like movies that have very long minutes without a score or any type of soundtrack.
Another thing that I really like about The Forever Purge is that they made the NFFA seem like some sort of higher, mystical and untouchable power even after everything got out of hand for them. In other movies in this franchise, we saw direct involvement of the government in the purging event but in this one, except for a few military impact and two policemen, there was really no government involvement. We did not even see the NFFA.
I think it was a good idea to make the movie like this to sort of emphasize the effects of the policies these people come up with on the average person. If you think about it, even in the real world we say "The Government" as if referring to a powerful entity. When I was a child I even thought the Government was a group of look-alike men in suits and dark glasses (yes, matrix influenced). This movie kind of brings back that ideology of facelessness to the people that are actually benefitting from the Purge exercise. It even makes you angrier when people suffer because of their senseless policies and you don't know what they even look like.

It's really easy to predict movies these days so when I see a movie with some unexpected events, I am either impressed or annoyed. The Forever Purge is clearly a movie involving a lot of murder and blood so yeah, that much was not a surprise. What I did not anticipate though was who would die and who would survive. The people that I really thought would die, and honestly wanted to, were somehow still alive until the end.
Speaking of the end, I really like the unlikely team up that happened. In the end, they took down one of the supremacist leaders in a really cool way. I like what Juan said to the guy before shooting him. It was in Spanish and even though I did not understand it at first, it was still funny and cool. I had to look up the meaning online and it just got funnier.
In my opinion, the ending was epic and it was thanks to the great performances by the actors. I like Tenoch Huerta's performance as Juan. I would have normally said he overdid it because he hardly ever smiled but he was cool. I also like Ana de la Reguera's performance as Adela. I just really like how tough and brave she was and how she could handle herself. She was really hyped to live the American dream but after she saw the dark side of her new home, she was determined to return to Mexico. You know what they say; The devil you know is better than the angel you don't.

The dynamics of this movie is good. A couple who fled their home country to the US are faced with very real problems at extreme levels. If you've watched other other purge movies but haven't seen this one the what are you waiting for? If you haven't seen any purge movie, you can start with this. The movie is entertaining and the acting is good. You may like it as much as I did.
