Ever since I was a kid I have been a fan of Sam Raimi movies. The Evil Dead series starring Bruce Campbell had just the right balance of horror, gore, and comedy. Back in 2022 he directed Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, which wasn't a bad film. However since the Marvel Cinematic Universe producers had their fingers in the pie it could have been better... Raimi stated that the one actor he felt just didn't have a big enough part in the film was Rachel McAdams. He decided to direct another movie featuring her, and thus Send Help was born.
Having also been a long time fan of McAdams, this movie sounded like it had a lot of potential. With her stellar acting abilities and Raimi's horror and jump scares, I was excited to watch it. McAdams plays the part of Linda Little an overworked and underappreciated corporate strategist. She had been promised a promotion to Vice President by the owner, who suddenly died. His son Bradley Preston, played by Dylan O'Brien, doesn't play by his father's rules. Instead choosing to promote his fraternity buddies and attractive women. He has a fiancé with a large diamond she flashes everywhere in the office, claiming her territory. McAdams had been intentionally made less pretty by makeup and walked with a slouch in the office to make her seem less appealing. Plus she was dressed like a total geek which was hilarious!
Upon learning she was being passed over for the VP job she became understandably upset. Preston tells her she will have one chance to prove herself on a business trip to Asia. She boards the corporate jet and prepares a strategy to save the trip. However, Preston and his buddies find a video of Linda auditioning for Survivor, her favorite program, and laugh uncontrollably. Subsequently the plane suffers a disaster and crashes into the ocean. Linda finds herself on a beach the next day with the only other survivor being a gravely wounded Preston.
Linda, with all her skills learned from Survivor, quickly starts to flourish in the tropical paradise and begins to nurse Preston back to health. She quickly teaches him that the power structure has reversed, she is the one in charge now and he will die without her. After some time Preston heals, and is hoping daily for rescue. While Linda enjoying the power, and her attraction to Preston, wants anything but rescue. Eventually the fiancé comes looking for Preston and finds Linda, who offers to take her to Preston along with her boat captain. They both suffer a fall to their deaths, staged by Linda to prevent rescue.
A few days later Preston finds his fiancé's hand sticking out of the sand with the ring on it. He quickly surmises it was the work of Linda, and a fight to the death ensues. This is where the movie gets really interesting, with plot twists and lots of gore. I won't give anymore away, and I haven't given away many spoiler. There are a lot of great jump scares, and overall it's a fun movie with a great cast and script. Raimi weaves it together perfectly. If you like horror and dark comedy this film is for you!
And a couple screenshots of McAdams covered in gore:
I really enjoyed this film, and if you are a fan of Sam Raimi, horror, dark comedy, and gore you will love it. I would rate in 90/100. One I would gladly watch a second time. Please feel free to leave any comments or questions below. And as always, thank you for all of your support. It's deeply appreciated!
