Babylon (Review/Reseña)

In the year 1920, the cinema was about to witness the last moments of silent cinema, delivering an evolution that would be in charge not only of attracting the attention of more public, but also of getting rid of important figures who could not cope with the change.

En el año 1920, el cine estaba por presenciar los últimos momentos del cine mudo, entregando una evolución que se encargaría no solo de llamar la atención de más publico, sino de deshacerse de figuras importantes que no pudieron con el cambio.

Damian Chazelle is one of my favorite directors, maybe it's because I like musicals, or maybe because I like how he shows his colorful stories, the point is, I was dying to see this movie, I had the opportunity to saw it last week and it wasn't until now that I can talk about it, my opinion, about Babylon.

It really is a heavy film, with its duration of three hours it doesn't show much and it teaches us so little, even though it deals with the evolution of cinema and an unrequited romance, it tries to cover more things without being able to fully sustain it. It was sad to watch the movie in my opinion, mostly due to the fact that I was expecting a real musical where you could feel the love for jazz as is typical of Damian, but instead it's just background music for a restaurant.

The main character, Nellie LaRoy (Margot Robbie), was unbearable for me, although at first she has that spark of cunning that makes you hooked on the idea that with her charisma she can achieve everything, there comes a point where it doesn't work for her, she is a walking whirlwind that destroys everything in her path, which ends up affecting another protagonist, Manny (Diego Calva), who arguably had the most peaceful and interesting ending in the film.

For a moment I expected that Brad Pitt would sing or dance, but I am disappointed that this did not happen, although it may have an entertaining story, I do not feel that the character or the story as such has much of the essence of the director, the obsession, love, everything on this occasion is cinema, and I feel that it was not as demonstrative as it could have been in his old films, perhaps that is why he did not have as much luck at the box office.

The film went almost unnoticed, it did poorly at its premiere and at the awards it did not do so well either, sad that the director did not take something home with him, beyond the opinion that it is too long a film, with an ending quite confusing.

Damian Chazelle es uno de mis directores favoritos, quizás sea por el hecho de que me gustan los musicales, o tal vez porque me gusta como muestra sus historias tan coloridas, el punto es que, me moría por ver esta película, tuve la oportunidad de verla la semana pasada y no fue sino hasta ahora que puedo hablar de ella, mi opinión, acerca de Babylon.

Realmente es una película pesada, con su duración de tres horas no muestra demasiado y nos enseña tan poco, aunque se trate de la evolución del cine y un romance no correspondido, trata de abarcar más cosas sin poder sostenerlo por completo. Fue triste ver la película en mi opinión, más que nada por el hecho de que me esperaba un verdadero musical donde se podía sentir el amor por el jazz como es típico de Damian, pero en vez de eso, es solo música de fondo de un restaurante.

La protagonista principal, Nellie LaRoy (Margot Robbie), se me hizo insoportable, aunque en un inicio tiene esa chispa de astucia que te hace enganchar con la idea de que con su carisma lo puede lograr todo, llega un punto donde no le funciona, es un torbellino andante que arrasa todo a su camino, lo que termina afectando a otro protagonista, Manny (Diego Calva), que se podría decir que tuvo el desenlace más pacifico e interesante en la película.

Por un momento espere que Brad Pitt cantara o hiciera algún baile, pero me lleve la desilución de que eso no sucedió, aunque puede tener una historia entretenida, no siento que el personaje ni la historia como tal tenga tanto de la esencia del director, la obsesión, el amor, todo en esta ocasión es el cine, y siento que no fue tan demostrativo como pudo haberlo sido en sus antiguas películas, tal vez por eso no tuvo tanta suerte en taquillas.

La película paso casi desapercibida, le fue mal en su estreno y en premios no le fue tan bien tampoco, triste que no se haya llevado algo a casa el director, más allá que la opinión de que es una película demasiado larga, con un final bastante confuso.
