A few days ago, I downloaded a bunch of new horror movies and had some pleasant surprises. The best one was the one I posted here a while ago, "Bring Her Back," but I can't help but mention this fascinating work by director Emilie Kristine Blichfeldt (her first feature film), which is The Ugly Stepsister. It's a kind of paranoid and distorted fable of the romanticized tales of "finding Prince Charming". And I think what's most interesting here is precisely the contrast of techniques, the use of post-cinema in aesthetic terms interspersed with the almost hypnagogic narration/model of the story itself, reminiscent of a kind of "Picnic at the Mysterious Mountain" filmed by Nicolas Winding Refn. And best of all, made from the perspective of a female director.
It is unclear what to expect from "The Ugly Stepsister." We see cracks in the female psyche, suffering interspersed with obsession, gore mixed with illusory romance, and so on. Here, in fact, the "supposedly ugly" sister ends up having to deal with her terrible family and, in many moments, submitting herself to unimaginable strategies to "improve." Here's a little video that isn't necessarily a SPOILER, but it is one of the most iconic scenes in the film.

Esses dias atrás eu baixei uma porção de novos filmes de horror e tive algumas gratas surpresas, o melhor deles foi o que eu postei aqui há um tempo "Bring her Back", mas não posso deixar de mencionar essa obra fascinante feita pela diretora Emilie Kristine Blichfeldt (seu primeiro longa) que é o The Ugly Stepsister. Uma espécie de fábula paranóica e deturpada dos contos romantizados de "encontrar o príncipe encantado". E acho que o que é mais interessante aqui é exatamente o contraste de técnicas, o uso do pós cinema em termos estéticos intercalados com a narração/modelo quase hipnagógico da história em si, lembrando uma espécie de "Picnic na Montanha Misteriosa" filmada por Nicolas Winding Refn. E o melhor de tudo, feito pela visão de uma diretorA (mulher!).
Não fica claro o que se deve esperar de "The Ugly Stepsister", temos fissuras na psique feminina, sofrimento intercalado com obsessão, gore misturado com romance ilusório, e assim por diante. Aqui de fato a "supostamente feia" irmã acaba tendo de lidar com sua péssima família e em muitos momentos submetendo-se a inimagináveis estratégias para "melhorar". Aqui vale um videozinho que não necessariamente é um SPOILER, mas é uma das cenas mais icônicas do filme.
