Kraven The Hunter.

Kraven the Hunter.... I went in expecting at least a decent Marvel adjacent action flick, but see as I came out just mostly confused about why this movie exists the way it is.

This story is about Sergei Kravinoff, a man who basically grew up starved of real affection from his own father, Nikolai, who is a ruthless gangster he clearly favored his other son, Dmitri, over him, watching that dynamic unfold, you immediately understand where all of Sergei's issues come from, the classic case of a child desperate for approval from a parent who simply is not capable of giving it, that rejection alone would already be enough trauma to build a character around but the movie takes it a step further when young Sergei gets mauled by a lion during a hunting trip gone wrong and instead of just dying from that attack like any normal person would, he survives through some mysterious blood ritual and that is what ends up giving him enhanced strength and these sharp animal instincts that basically define who he now becomes..

After that Sergei grows into an adult who wants absolutely nothing to do with his fathers criminal world so Instead, he turns toward nature... feeling way more connected to the animals than to most humans who are around him, which to be honest, after the childhood he had, he builds this whole alter ego for himself...

Kraven, is using his unique abilities and his bond with the animal kingdom to hunt down and take out alot of criminals who prey on wildlife, it is an interesting concept on paper, a man who found more loyalty and peace with animals than with his own blood family, choosing to protect the natural world the same way nobody protected him growing up...

Now here is where the real issues with this movie start creeping in.... as compelling as that backstory sounds when you break it down like this, watching it now actually play out on screen just did not hit the same way... the pacing felt like it was all over the place, jumping between his traumatic past and his present day hunter persona without really letting either storyline breathe properly... I kept waiting to feel something for Sergei, to really root for him the way origin stories are supposed to make you do, but instead I just felt like I was watching scenes happen one after another without much emotional buildup connecting them.

Eventually, fate does what fate does in these kinds of movies and pulls Sergei straight back into his father and brothers orbit, forcing him to confront everything he tried running away from, and look, that setup should have delivered some serious emotional payoff, old wounds reopening, confrontation with the people who shaped his pain in the first place, instead, it just felt rushed, like the movie knew it needed to get there but didn't actually care about taking its time to make that reunion hit hard.

Performance wise, I don't think anybody really failed here, Aaron Taylor johnson clearly put in physical effort for this role and Russell Crowe brought his usual intensity as the cold, intimidating father figure but even strong performances can only do so much when the writing around them doesn't give the story enough weight to actually land..

And honestly, I am not surprised this one flopped the way it did, from the messy pacing to a story that had genuinely compelling ingredients but somehow still came out bland, it just didn't feel like a movie that knew exactly what kind of story it wanted to tell, an origin story, a revenge thriller, a nature versus humanity allegory, it tried touching all three without fully committing to any of them.

At the end of the movie, I was not left thinking about Sergei's journey or his pain, I was just thinking about how much untapped potential this whole concept actually had, sometimes a good idea just is bit just enough if the execution behind it can not carry the weight it is trying to hold...

So, I read patiently, followed the lines and waited to see if you were going to give it the usual hype people have been giving it.

This movie is a flop! Complete one. Maybe I'm not a fan of Marvel stuff...
