I saw Naked Weapon as a teenager and thought, wouldn't it be cool to post this here too, as I've seen the film many times as an adult and it definitely didn't hit me like it did as a teen.
The story follows how from a young age, these young girls have their lives taken away from them and are raised on a remote island as weapons and taught the methods of combat, seduction, and anything else that is necessary to become the world's most lethal assassin-for-hire, Then there's a CIA operative who's been working on this case for years, with no concrete evidence, until suddenly a new series of assassinations begins and he begins to connect the dots to deduce that Madame M may be back in business.
The women of this deadly elite team (Maggie Q, Anya Wu and more), as grown adults, seduce their prey to get close before killing them. Her character, Maggie Q, was so much part of the film that I found myself enjoying her presence in every aspect of the film and her action scenes were awesome, sharp, quick and very stylish in that early 2000's style of action Hong Kong style.
Now, I do have to be honest about something, because I remember watching this as a teenager without fully processing certain parts of it the way I do now, The training and initiation bit of the movie is quite disturbing and violent and is done in a way that has gotten very dated by the early 2000's action movie standards, Watching it again as an adult, that part sat with me differently, heavier, and honestly a lot more uncomfortable than I remembered it feeling back then. I think as a teenager I was mostly focused on the action and the "cool assassin girls" concept, without fully sitting with how dark and exploitative certain scenes actually were.
But outside of that, the action itself certainly delivers, The fight choreography is fun, cool, crazy in the best sense of the word and overall, Maggie Q's body language in this movie is one of the highlights, The idea of deadly young women trained from a young age to kill is a great premise for an action thriller and when the movie takes that route, with spy missions, seduction/elimination formula, espionage cat and mouse games, etc. with CIA, it's enjoyable Really.
Where it falls apart, though, is the storytelling itself, A lot of plot threads get introduced and never really go anywhere, character motivations feel thin, and the pacing jumps around without giving certain moments the weight they probably needed. It plays more like a series of stylish action set pieces loosely stitched together than a fully cohesive story.
Looking back now I think this movie shows something a lot of action movies from the 2000s did, focusing more on shock and big scenes than on good storytelling , especially when it came to the stories of the female characters, i still remember how much I liked it when I was a teenager,just the idea of a female character who was an assassin, the cool action scenes but I can see now what was wrong, with it.
I definitely would recommend Naked Weapon but with a warning
