CineTV Contest: Mi clásico favorito, un clásico de halloween, Hechizo de amor.
Hello! For this contest, I wasn't even sure if my favorite movie was considered a classic, this is a movie I've liked since I was a kid, I love magic and there is magic. I saw it again a few years ago and it wasn't exactly how I remember it, that's weird, it's not the first movie that I'm really sure has some scenes, even remember how they went, but actually, they never existed. Anyway, seeing it as an adult hits different, I'm still a child inside so I love it because it has magic and Nicole Kidman... and Sandra Bullock, but now I don't see just that.

Para este concurso, ni siquiera estaba segura de que mi película favorita fuera considerada un clásico, esta es una película que me gusta desde que era niña, me encanta la magia y hay magia en ella. La volví a ver hace unos años y no era exactamente como la recordaba, eso es raro, no es la primera película que estoy segura de que tiene algunas escenas, incluso recuerdo cómo eran, pero en realidad, nunca existieron. En fin, verla como adulto pega diferente, yo sigo siendo una niña por dentro así que me encanta porque tiene magia y Nicole Kidman... y Sandra Bullock, pero ahora no veo sólo eso.
PRACTICAL MAGIC (1998) | HECHIZO DE AMOR
The first witch of the Owens was María, she was a good-hearted woman but also a heartbreaker and played around with the men of the town (who had wives) she was sentenced to be hanged, but her gift, her magic saved her. The people around to see her die ran away, she waited for her lover to come later to rescue her, but it never happened. She was expecting his child and felt betrayed, hurt, so she took the decision to never love a man again and cast a spell, that for the bitter feelings she had become a curse for every man that loved an Owen woman was doomed to die.
La primera bruja de las Owens fue María, era una mujer de buen corazón pero también una rompe corazones y jugaba con los hombres del pueblo (que tenían esposas) fue condenada a la horca, pero su don, su magia la salvó. Sally's and Gillian's mom died from a broken heart after losing her husband. She knew that when she heard the sound of the deathwatch beetle, her beloved man was doomed to die, he did. The two girls, now orphans, went to live with their "aunts" two witches, sisters, that practiced their magic on the town and taught them all about it.

As witches of the town, they cast a spell or two for the women in love, and so they did, a woman came asking to make a man abandon his wife and come to her, for the spell she needed to stab a pigeon on its heart. Sally and Gillian saw it all but reacted very differently, Gillian said she couldn't wait to fall in love and Sally that she never wanted to fall in love. Here is when she cast the spell for an "impossible" man to be the one she falls in love with, so she never will fall in love and die from a broken heart.
Como brujas del pueblo, lanzaban algúno que otro hechizo para las mujeres enamoradas, y así lo hicieron, una mujer llegó pidiendo hacer que un hombre abandonara a su esposa y se acercara a ella, para el hechizo necesitaba apuñalar a una paloma en su corazón. Sally y Gillian lo vieron todo pero reaccionaron de forma muy diferente, Gillian dijo que no podía esperar a enamorarse y Sally que no quería enamorarse nunca. That is a scene I remember a lot, the traits she wrote weren't that hard to find, I thought, the only part I found impossible when I was a kid was the blue and green eyes... then I grew up and knew about heterochromia haha, which is rare but it's not magic.
Esa es una escena que recuerdo mucho, los rasgos que escribió no eran tan difíciles de encontrar, pensé, la única parte que me parecía imposible cuando era niña era la de los ojos azules y verdes... luego crecí y conocí la heterocromía jaja, que es rara pero no es mágica.
It was working, but her aunts cast a spell on her to fall in love with a man she crossed sights with, she did, they married and have two girls, the vivid image of Sally and Gillian, all of this while Gillian was gone from the island, living her wildlife, she scaped being a late teenager and has been years when she only kept in contact with Sally through letters. ... As it was supposed to happen, Sally heard the deathwatch beetle and Michael died. Her aunts didn't know she will truly love him, the curse wasn't supposed to work if it wasn't true love.
Funcionaba, pero sus tías la hechizaron para que se enamorara de un hombre con el que se cruzó, lo hizo, se casaron y tuvieron dos niñas, la viva imagen de Sally y Gillian, todo esto mientras Gillian estaba fuera de la isla, viviendo su vida salvaje, escapó siendo una adolescente tardía y han pasado años en los que sólo mantuvo contacto con Sally a través de cartas. ... Como era de esperar, Sally escuchó el escarabajo de la muerte y Michael murió. Sus tías no sabían que ella lo amaría de verdad, la maldición no debía funcionar si no era amor verdadero.
But she loved him, and this proved something, love is not just a feeling that magically appears and will be like that forever, love that suddenly appears might disappear fast, but true love is constructed, by sharing life, working out any problem, the spark can start a fire, but is the fuel and care that keep it alive.
From there, Sally decided her children won't do magic, neither will her (just that she did, for practical things like mixing her coffee)

A partir de ahí, Sally decidió que sus hijos no harían magia, ni ella tampoco (sólo que ella lo hacía, para cosas prácticas como mezclar su café)
Gillian came home to visit Sally one night after her husband died, they talked about their lovers, how Michael was, how Angelov, Gillian's boyfriend was intense, too intense Gillian had to give him a little bit of belladonna sometimes so he let her sleep; she didn't stay, she went back to Angelov.
After a while, he became violent, punched Gillian over a silly joke and she had to call Sally to pick her up. They were on her way out but Gillian had to look for an amulet on his car, where he was waiting, and made Sally drive while threatening Gillian. She has the belladonna in her purse and Sally used it to put Angelov to sleep, gave him too much and he died. Now they have to deal with the body so they don't go to Jail or Sally lose her children; but being witches, they decided to do something that was forbidden, to bring him back to life, just it wouldn't be him, but something even darker...
Gillian vino a casa a visitar a Sally una noche después de la muerte de su marido, hablaron de sus amantes, de cómo era Michael, de cómo Angelov, el novio de Gillian era intenso, demasiado intenso Gillian tenía que darle un poco de belladona a veces para que la dejara dormir; ella no se quedó, volvió con Angelov.
Después de un tiempo, se puso violento, le dio un puñetazo a Gillian por una broma tonta y ella tuvo que llamar a Sally para que la recogiera. Iban a salir, pero Gillian tuvo que buscar un amuleto en su coche, donde él estaba esperando e hizo que Sally condujera mientras amenazaba a Gillian. Ella tiene la belladona en su bolso y Sally la utilizó para dormir a Angelov, le dio demasiado y murió. Ahora tienen que lidiar con el cuerpo para no ir a la Cárcel o que Sally pierda a sus hijas; pero siendo brujas, decidieron hacer algo que estaba prohibido, devolverlo a la vida, sólo que no sería él, sino algo aún más oscuro...
From that part I remember that I loved Gillian's life, it might be so funny to escape and go party, she found a man she thought she wanted, that bad boy vibes that seem to drive women crazy, but you know, can't be surprised if your bad boy turns out being actually bad.
De esa parte recuerdo que me encantó la vida de Gillian, podría ser tan divertido escaparse e irse de fiesta, encontró a un hombre que creía que quería, esas vibras de chico malo que parecen volver locas a las mujeres, pero ya sabes, no puedes sorprenderte si tu chico malo resulta ser realmente malo.
They killed Angelov as soon as he woke up, with a pan on his neck, and then proceed to bury him and hide it from their aunts. It didn't end up there, a policeman came looking for him and Angelov itself was hunting them now.
Mataron a Angelov nada más despertarse, con una sartén en el cuello, y luego procedieron a enterrarlo y a esconderlo de sus tías. No terminó ahí, un policía vino a buscarlo y el propio Angelov las perseguía ahora.
One scene that is so random and great is when they, Sally, Gillian, and their aunts have midnight margaritas, it was like a party in the kitchen, and in an interview, Sandra said that they were actually drunk, they drank a bad tequila that Nicole brought, I don't know if that's true, and they have real alcohol on set? Maybe? Well, the drunk characters well very well portrayed, brutal honesty, bad jokes, and not the most elegant behavior... it was both happy and sad, and wrong... it wasn't a normal bottle they had, it was the bottle that they poisoned with belladonna to kill Angelov the first time. At this moment they understand that he's back but still didn't explain it to their aunts, so they left them to clean up their own mess.
Una escena que es tan extraña y genial es cuando ellas, Sally, Gillian y sus tías se toman unas margaritas a medianoche, era como una fiesta en la cocina, y en una entrevista, Sandra dijo que en realidad estaban borrachas, se tomaron un tequila malo que trajo Nicole, no sé si eso es cierto, ¿Tienen alcohol de verdad en el set? ¿Quizás? Bueno, los personajes borrachos fueron muy bien retratados, honestidad brutal, bromas de mal gusto, y no el comportamiento más elegante... era a la vez alegre y triste, y mal... no era una botella normal que tenían, era la botella que envenenaron con belladona para matar a Angelov la primera vez. En este momento entienden que ha vuelto pero todavía no se lo explicaron a sus tías, así que ellas las dejaron para limpiar su propio desastre.
While doing that, the policeman came several times to talk to Sally and the people in the town, Sally confronts him and he said, he will go to their house and have a chat. Gillian thinks is a good idea to make a spell to scare him away, with the help of her nieces, but they found their mom's journal with the spell Sally wrote, moments later they see the policeman doing all of the things there and noticed he was the man, so they threw away the potion Gillian made.
Mientras lo hacía, el policía se acercó varias veces a hablar con Sally y con la gente del pueblo, Sally se enfrenta a él y éste le dice que irá a su casa a charlar. Gillian piensa que es una buena idea hacer un hechizo para ahuyentarle, con la ayuda de sus sobrinas, pero encuentran el diario de su madre con el hechizo que Sally escribió, momentos después ven al policía haciendo todas las cosas allí y se dan cuenta de que es el hombre, así que tiran la poción que Gillian hizo.
In the middle of that was a cute moment, I love it when Kylie (one of Sally's daughters) said "I can't wait to fall in love" in front of Gillian and she stopped, it was like hearing herself years ago, so she told her niece that love is like spinning so fast, raising your heartbeats, turns everything upsidedown, but if you don't focus on something still, your lose your mind and can't see what happened to the people around you.
That was great, omit the rest of the movie, just this message alone stands up by itself. Love can be great, can be wild, but, if you let it blind you, you might not notice that it wasn't lov at all. A cool head is not against love, a cool head can make you appreciate more what is actually love.
En medio de eso hubo un momento muy lindo, me encanta cuando Kylie (una de las hijas de Sally) dijo "No puedo esperar a enamorarme" frente a Gillian y ella se detuvo, fue como escucharse a sí misma años atrás, entonces le dijo a su sobrina que el amor es como girar tan rápido, elevar los latidos del corazón, pone todo de cabeza, pero si no te concentras en algo quieto, pierdes la cabeza y no puedes ver lo que pasó con la gente que te rodea.
Eso fue genial, omite el resto de la película, sólo este mensaje se sostiene por sí mismo. El amor puede ser grande, puede ser salvaje, pero, si dejas que te ciegue, puede que no te des cuenta de que no fue amor en absoluto. Una cabeza fría no está en contra del amor, una cabeza fría puede hacerte apreciar más lo que es realmente el amor.
The policeman, Gary, talked again with Sally and it was a weird conversation: "Did you or your sister kill Angelov?" and she answered "Oh, yeah, a couple of times" the policeman was so confused but she wasn't lying, and this is something I've found in real life, telling the truth with irony makes people think you are being funny, but if they discover it you can say? "I told you but you didn't believe it".
By now, Angelov possessed Gillian and Gary was they to see it, now he believes. He was able to make the spirit back off with his police badge with the shape of a star. After that, Sally talked honestly with him, in a non-ironical way, and after seeing his eyes, one blue one green, she knew what they both felt was her spell. He came because of it, not for Angelov. She made him leave, so he did, after saying that he wished for her too.
El policía, Gary, volvió a hablar con Sally y fue una conversación extraña: "¿Tú o tu hermana manaron a Angelov?" y ella contestó "Oh, sí, un par de veces" el policía estaba muy confundido pero ella no estaba mintiendo, y esto es algo que he encontrado en la vida real, decir la verdad con ironía hace que la gente piense que estás siendo gracioso, pero si lo descubren puedes decir? Sally came inside the house and wanted comfort from Gillian, but she was still possessed by Angelov and they didn't notice before. Everything deteriorated so fast, the aunts came five seconds past the "just in time" mark and after a second of catching off what was going on, started to prepare the exorcism.
Sally finally accepted her magic again so while her daughters were helping to light the candles, she blew them and the kids were astonished seen her mom doing that and tried to do it too.
Sally entró en la casa y quiso el consuelo de Gillian, pero seguía poseída por Angelov y no se dieron cuenta antes. Todo se deterioró tan rápido, que las tías llegaron cinco segundos después de la marca "justo a tiempo" y después de un segundo de captar lo que estaba pasando, comenzaron a preparar el exorcismo.
Sally finalmente aceptó su magia de nuevo, así que mientras sus hijas ayudaban a encender las velas, ella las sopló y las niñas se quedaron asombradas al ver a su madre haciendo eso e intentaron hacerlo también.
The women of the town and people, in general, didn't like the Owens, because they were mysterious, people knew they were witches but never prove it, so they were jealous and afraid. So it was a surprise when they needed a coven to make the exorcism and Sally had to call the moms from school and other friends that always talked behind her back and say things about her being a witch, but as soon as she came out (as a witch, they said that too haha) and told them that they needed them to help Gillian vanish his problematic ex-boyfriend, they just said yes, it's like they wanted the witches to be just women and as soon as they needed them to fight an abusive man, they stood up.
A las mujeres del pueblo y a la gente, en general, no les gustaban las Owen, porque eran misteriosas, la gente sabía que eran brujas pero nunca lo demostraban, así que tenían celos y miedo. Por eso fue una sorpresa cuando necesitaron un aquelarre para hacer el exorcismo y Sally tuvo que llamar a las mamás del colegio y a otras amigas que siempre hablaban a sus espaldas y decían cosas de que era bruja, pero en cuanto salió del closet (como bruja, eso lo dijeron ahí jaja) y les dijo que las necesitaban para ayudar a Gillian a desvanecer a su problemático ex novio, simplemente dijeron que sí, es como si quisieran que las brujas fueran sólo mujeres y en cuanto las necesitaron para luchar contra un hombre abusivo, se plantaron.
When the sisters and the women of the town worked together, hand by hand, they did not just get to exorcise Angelov's spirit from Gillian but also break the curse that María put on the Owens women. I think it was because María wasn't just mad at her lover but at the town and love in general when she cast the spell, it wasn't meant to be a curse nor to overall her descendants, it was supposed to protect her to get hurt again. Now that the women from the town helped them, and the sister's love was the center of their magic, that curse got vanished too.
Cuando las hermanas y las mujeres del pueblo trabajaron juntas, mano a mano, no sólo consiguieron exorcizar el espíritu de Angelov de Gillian, sino también romper la maldición que María lanzó sobre las mujeres Owens. Creo que fue porque María no sólo estaba enfadada con su amante sino con el pueblo y el amor en general cuando lanzó el hechizo, no pretendía ser una maldición ni abarcar a sus descendientes, sino protegerla para que le hicieran daño de nuevo. Ahora que las mujeres del pueblo las ayudaron, y el amor de la hermana fue el centro de su magia, esa maldición también se desvaneció.
Sally's love story didn't end there, after fixing everything the last thing to do was call him, she even asked Gillian what would she do, and she said "What wouldn't I do for the right guy" so Sally send a leaf, a spell, to look for him, and he came back, they looked at each other while the aunts, Gilliand, and the kids, smiled in the background.
La historia de amor de Sally no terminó ahí, después de arreglar todo lo último que hizo fue llamarlo, incluso le preguntó a Gillian que haría, y ella le dijo "Qué no haría por el chico correcto" así que Sally envió una hoja, un hechizo, para buscarlo, y él regresó, se miraron mientras las tías, Gilliand, y los niños, sonreían en el fondo.
In the final scene, when they jump off the roof with their umbrellas and fly, while the town watched them laughing and enjoying, I found it very heartwarming that they got to fit with the town, not by being like them, as Sally always tried, but by finally showing their true selves.
En la escena final, cuando saltan desde el tejado con sus paraguas y vuelan, mientras el pueblo les observa riendo y disfrutando, me pareció muy reconfortante que consiguieran encajar con el pueblo, no siendo como ellos, como siempre intentó Sally, sino mostrando por fin su verdadero yo.
Despite the success with the critics this movie didn't have, it became a cult classic, a movie that always come back on Halloween, and the girls that were kids or teenagers in the 90's and early 2000 are now women that still love this movie. Whatching women being the main characters, watching sisterhood, fashion, not gonna lie, the aesthetic is very appealing, and simply magic, was a key factor in our love for this movie and I'll risk to say that even to our personalities, I was totally raised by witched shows haha.
A pesar del éxito con la crítica que no tuvo esta película, se convirtió en un clásico de culto, una película que siempre vuelve en Halloween, y las chicas que eran niñas o adolescentes en los 90 y principios del 2000 son ahora mujeres que siguen amando esta película. Ver a las mujeres ser las protagonistas, ver la hermandad, la moda, no voy a mentir, la estética es muy atractiva, y simplemente la magia, fue un factor clave en nuestro amor por esta película y me arriesgaré a decir que incluso en nuestras personalidades, fui totalmente criada por programas de brujas jaja.
