Trapped on Netflix - Great Icelandic crime series!

Review by @unbiasedwriter · 1958d · of Trapped

I am a big fan of Scandinavian crime series. The Bridge has got to be my favorite (four seasons with ten episodes each), but I have been looking for some new series to watch recently. That is how I ended up watching a couple of episodes of Bordertown, a Finnish series that I really liked (sort of), but still - it didn't manage to live up to its potential, so I stopped after 4-5 episodes.

But, then I decided to give the Icelandic series Trapped a chance, and after watching two seasons (twenty episodes), I can say that I have had a really great time doing so.

What is Trapped about?

The first five episodes of season one are what has given the English name to the series. Iceland is an interesting country, and during the first episodes of season 1, a dead body is discovered in a town that is impossible to reach from the outside due to a heavy snowstorm. As a result, nobody is leaving town and nobody is arriving. This is the perfect setting for a good crime story, and it really manages to live up to this.

But, where did the dead body discovered in the sea come from? To whom does the body belong, from which arms and bones have been removed? The leading investigator is the local cop Andri, a big piece of a guy, but who seems to have his heart in the right place.

The story comes with quite a lot of surprises, and I enjoy the fact that you don't know who is the killer or the bad guys until the story comes to an end after ten episodes.

Those Icelandic names...

I have got to laugh a bit at this fact, but one of the biggest challenges with this series was to understand all the relationships and remember the names. I was watching it with my wife and we often looked at one another and asked: "Who is that?" And then, is that the mother, or the sister, or the wife, or who knows what? And then when they referred to names, it was a bit confusing as well, at times. But, that is just something you will fix and cope with, at least if you enjoy the series and want to watch it.

It should also be mentioned that this is a really good commercial for Iceland if you look at the nature. If you consider the stories of the two seasons, then Iceland will sound really scary (due to the crime stories portrayed), but since this is just fiction, you have nothing to worry about!

Is Trapped for you?

If you like a good crime story in which the police is trying to catch bad guys, and you like seeing stories develop along the way, without knowing where it is going to take you, then this is great! Sometimes Scandinavian crime stories can be very brutal, but I did not find this very brutal. It isn't for kids, but all in all, a quite harmless crime story!

My score: 8/10

The conclusion? This is a series worth watching! It is on Netflix (almost everywhere) as far as I know, so search for it on Netflix if you feel like watching it!

I think that the source of confusion with names is that Icelanders, unlike the rest of Europe, generally use patronymic instead of family last names. For example, someone named "Bjorn Magnusson" doesn't belong to any Magnusson family and is instead simply "son of Magnus"; his sister Helga is named "Helga Magnusdottir" or "daughter of Magnus". This might be confusing to outsiders but it obviously works for Icelanders.
