Thousands of eyes were focused on the appearance of this new slasher crafted appropriately with the elements of this sub-genre of horror. I saw the cover of Sick weeks ago for the first time and it immediately caught my eye; perhaps it was the intensity of its blood-red color or maybe the brief description below that offered something different. Either way, it worked, and I'm glad I could embrace it.
The Covid-19 pandemic is still a reality in our days, there are countries like China, which still follow very strict codes of prevention, while the rest of the world, maintains a normal life thanks to the doses of vaccines that have been implemented. Those dark days were not easy, people were opposed to contacting; a sneeze seemed to be a biological bomb loaded with deadly viruses, and just hearing it, people shuddered.

Miles de miradas se enfocaron en la aparición de este nuevo slasher elaborado adecuadamente con los elementos de este subgénero del terror. Vi la portada de Sick hace semanas por primera vez e inmediatamente llamó mi atención; quizás fue la intensidad de su color rojo sangre o tal vez la breve descripción de abajo que ofrecía algo diferente. De cualquier manera, funcionó, y me alegra que haya podido aceptarlo.
La pandemia del Covid-19 sigue siendo una realidad en nuestros días, hay países como China, que todavía siguen códigos muy estrictos de prevención, mientras que el resto del mundo, simplemente mantiene una vida normal gracias a las dosis de vacunas que se han estado implementando. Aquellos días turbios no fueron nada fáciles, las personas estaban reacias al contacto; un estornudo parecía ser una bomba biológica cargada de virus mortales, y de solo escucharlo, la gente se estremecía.
Sick, not only shows us this panorama, but also the consequences of evading prevention measures at a time when the vaccine was not yet distributed; showing us a terrifying and catastrophic reality, full of chases and good action.
This American film from 2023 was directed by John Hyams and produced by Kevin Williamson with Bill Block. It starred Gideon Adlon and Beth Million; along with Dylan Sprayberry, Marc Menchaca, and Jane Adams. The film was released by the American company Peacock and has had good reviews on platforms such as Filmaffinity, IMDb, and Rotten Tomatoes.
Hyams and Williamson, are renowned people here, as Williamson was the screenwriter of two films of the Scream saga, while Hyams, has participated as a writer of Universal Soldier: Day of Reckoning, a classic action film, and science fiction, so we can say that we will find good material; both in action and suspense.
Sick, is about two girls: Parker (Gideon Adlon) and Miri (Beth Million), who decide to spend the rest of their vacations isolated during the Covid-19 pandemic in a house in the middle of some mountains next to a lake, which Parker's parents own, but their solitude is unexpectedly interrupted, first by Parker's boyfriend; DJ (Dylan Sprayberry), who shows up to be with his girlfriend during those, and second, by a stalker who will do his best to make those young people who are in that beautiful cabin have a very bloody surprise.
Sick, no solo nos enseña este panorama, sino las consecuencias de evadir las medidas de prevención en un tiempo donde la vacuna todavía no se distribuía; mostrándonos una realidad terrorífica y catastrófica, cargada de persecuciones y buena acción.
Esta película estadounidense del 2023, fue dirigida por John Hyams y producida por Kevin Williamson junto a Bill Block. Estuvo protagonizada por Gideon Adlon y Beth Million; junto a Dylan Sprayberry, Marc Menchaca y Jane Adams. La película fue estrenada por la empresa americana Peacock, y al parecer ha tenido buenas críticas dentro de plataformas como Filmaffinity, IMDb y Rotten Tomatoes.
Hyams y Williamson, son personas de renombre aquí, ya que Williamson fue guionista de dos películas de la saga Scream, mientras que Hyams, ha participado como escritor de Universal Soldier: Day of Reckoning, un clásico del cine de acción y la ciencia ficción, así que podemos decir que encontraremos buen material; tanto en acción como en suspenso.
Sick, trata sobre dos chicas: Parker (Gideon Adlon) y Miri (Beth Million), que deciden pasar el resto de las vacaciones aisladas en pandemia en una casa en medio de unas montañas junto a un lago, la cual es propiedad de los padres de Parker, pero su soledad es interrumpida inesperadamente, primero por el novio de Parker; DJ (Dylan Sprayberry), quien se aparece para estar con su novia durante esos, y segundo, por un acosador que hará lo posible para que esos jóvenes que se encuentran en esa hermosa cabaña tengan una sorpresa muy sangrienta.
The premise is very simple and typical of all slashers: young people in conditions of isolation, without older adults nearby, and stalked by a killer, well, this is what it is and I'm glad because this is just the tip of the iceberg to what we are going to find.
At the beginning of the movie, we will see some scenes with a boy named Tyler (Joel Courtney) who will be the first victim of the killer; the reasons, we will know later, since even the simplest plots must have a purpose.
I liked this introduction very much and it offers us several intense scenes, with blows, cuts, smashed objects and scattered everywhere; and all in a small apartment. The scenes are shocking and the 'jumpscare' worked quite well with me.
As we continue watching the movie, we will start to get to know the main characters and their adventure; all this drama may seem irrelevant, but it is very important to understand the shocking revelation later on. After about 30 minutes into the movie, we'll start to enjoy the action.
La premisa es muy simple y típica de todos los slashers: jóvenes en condiciones de aislamiento, sin adultos mayores cerca y acechados por un asesino, bien, esto es lo que hay y me alegra, pues esto es solo la punta del iceberg a lo que nos vamos a encontrar.
Al principio de la película, veremos unas escenas con un chico llamado Tyler (Joel Courtney) quien será la primera víctima del asesino; las razones, las sabremos más adelante, ya que hasta las tramas más simples deben tener un propósito.
Esta introducción me gustó mucho y nos ofrece varios abrebocas de escenas fuertes, con golpes, cortadas, objetos destrozados y esparcidos por todas partes; y todo en un apartamento pequeño. Las escenas son impactantes y el ‘jumpscare’ funcionó bastante conmigo.
A medida que seguimos viendo la película, empezaremos a conocer a los personajes principales y su aventura; todo este drama puede parecer irrelevante, pero es muy importante para entender la impactante revelación más adelante. Más allá de 30 minutos de película, es cuando comenzaremos a gozar de la acción.
What I loved most about this movie, were the chases and jumpscares, you can feel a strong tension once the battle begins; along with a great rising anxiety that embraced me every time. The movie made me put myself in the situation of the protagonists, and I could feel all that panic, adrenaline, and instinct to survive the clutches of a psychopath.
I was also pleased that the story was concise; without a lot of unnecessary filler that adds nothing to the plot and with the right amount of characters. It seems to me that it is rightly elevated to make a great movie; sometimes simple is best.
The performances, especially from the lead girls, were very good, as they stimulated all these feelings I mentioned above. Something I forgot to emphasize, was the reference it has with Screamwhen the stalker killer writes the same text message to Tyler and Parker: You Wanna Party?, I found that so hilarious, although I started to realize it minutes after watching the movie.
Lo que más me encantó de esta película, fueron las persecuciones y los jumpscares, de verdad que se siente la fuerte tensión una vez iniciada la batalla; junto a una gran ansiedad ascendente que me abrazaba a cada rato. La película hizo que me colocara en la situación de las protagonistas, y pude sentir todo ese pánico, adrenalina e instinto de sobrevivir de las garras de un psicópata.
También me agradó que la historia fuera concisa; sin mucho relleno innecesario que no aporta nada a la trama y con la cantidad de personajes adecuados. Me parece que está correctamente elevada a hacer una gran película; a veces simple es lo mejor.
Las actuaciones, especialmente de las chicas protagonistas, fueron muy buenas, puesto que me estimularon todas estas sensaciones que mencioné anteriormente. Algo que olvidé recalcar, fue las referencias que tiene con Scream, cuando el asesino acosador le escribe el mismo mensaje de texto a Tyler y Parker: You Wanna Party?, eso me pareció tan hilarante, aunque comencé a caer en cuenta minutos después de haber visto la película.
On the other hand, seeing Jane Adams in this movie was something that surprised me. I hadn't seen her in the short cast, and when she appeared in that first funny scene, I recognized her immediately. I'm used to seeing her in comedy films or series; I don't think I've ever seen her play a role like this, however, I have no complaints, as both her performance and her character gave me a lot of cringes.
This slasher-style feature film is perfectly ideal for a night of horror movies. For all that I have mentioned, I find it to be a great film; especially since it uses a different storyline in its plot which is the Covid-19 pandemic. This disease, just out, took the lives of many young and old people. In the United States, it grew exponentially, increasing the numbers to more than 250,000 infected. Pandemics and their consequences have always inspired new stories in fiction; from literature to film; and when we contemplate this subject here with a disturbing undertone, we become reflective for the moment.
Por otra parte, ver a Jane Adams en esta película fue algo que me sorprendió. No la había visto en el reparto breve, y cuando apareció en esa primera escena graciosa, la reconocí de inmediato. Estoy acostumbrado a verla en películas o series de comedia; creo que jamás la había visto interpretar un papel como este, sin embargo, no tengo ninguna queja, puesto que tanto su actuación como su personaje me dieron mucho cringe.
Este largometraje estilo slasher es perfectamente ideal para pasar una noche de películas de terror. Por todo lo que he mencionado, me parece que es una gran película; sobre todo porque usa un argumento diferente en su trama que es la pandemia del Covid-19. Esta enfermedad, recién salida, se llevó la vida de muchos jóvenes y personas mayores. En Estados Unidos fue creciendo exponencialmente, aumentando las cifras a más de 250.000 infectados. Las pandemias y sus consecuencias siempre han inspirado nuevas historias en la ficción; desde la literatura hasta el cine; y cuando contemplamos este tema aquí con un trasfondo perturbador, nos volvemos reflexivos de moment.
