I always say that it is quite difficult to find something good on Netflix, although there is always an exception. As the years go by, the catalog becomes more diverse, but lacking in quality. On this occasion, I generated expectations for a movie that, ever since it was announced, I've wanted to see.
I know it's bad to generate illusions about things; however, I got carried away and I'm not disappointed at all. The Count, a film very rich in narrative language, here we will see the macabre face of love, seasoned with greed and ambition, and added to all this, a historical background that exposes corruption and power, which has always destroyed the human soul since unmentionable times.
I, as a viewer; a lover of dark cinema and its derivatives, present my opinion about this film, which has been like an opera that satisfies you in several aspects with its mix of genres.

Siempre digo que es bastante difícil encontrar algo bueno en Netflix, aunque siempre hay una excepción. A medida que van pasando los años, el catálogo se hace más diverso, pero carente de calidad. En esta ocasión, me generé expectativas por una película que, desde que se anunció, he querido ver.
Sé que es malo generarse ilusiones sobre las cosas; sin embargo, me dejé llevar y no me siento decepcionado para nada. El Conde, una película muy rica en lenguaje narrativo, aquí veremos la cara macabra del amor, aderezado con la codicia y la ambición, y aunado a todo esto, un trasfondo histórico que expone la corrupción y el poder, el cual siempre ha derruido el alma humana desde tiempos innombrables.
Yo, como espectador; amante del cine oscuro y sus derivados, presento mi opinión sobre este film, que ha sido como una ópera que te satisface en varios aspectos con su mezcla de géneros.

El Conde is a Chilean film of the genre Black comedy or Satirical fantasy, directed by Pablo Larraín and scripted by its director together with Guillermo Calderón. The main cast includes Jaime Vadell as Augusto Pinochet, Paula Luchsinger as Carmen, Alfredo Castro as Fyodor, Gloria Münchmeyer as Lucia Hiriart, Antonia Zegers as Jacinta, Amparo Noguera as Mercedes, Diana Mercado as Armenta, among others.
Cinematography was by Edward Lachman and editing by Sofía Subercaseaux. The company in charge of the production was Fábula, and the film was distributed on the Netflix streaming platform. The film premiered at the Venice Film Festival on August 30 this year, winning an award for best screenplay, then premieres on September 15 on Netflix with a duration of 110 minutes.

Plot
Here we will find an alternate reality, centered on the former dictator Augusto Pinochet, who ruled Chile during the period 1973-1990. In this universe, the former president Pinochet is portrayed as a vampire, in which we will gradually learn about his origin. After living 250 years, he finally decides to stop drinking blood to end his privilege of having eternal life, as he is tired of the world remembering him as a terrible dictator.
Pinochet's wife; Lucia Hiriart, a very unscrupulous woman, tries to change her husband's decision to end his life, but this is just a set-up, since she only wants to be immortal; and begs her husband to grant her that privilege.
Suddenly, in the city of Santiago, a series of murders occur in which the victims have had their hearts cut out. Pinochet's children suspect that it was their father, and go to the mansion where he lives in southern Latin America.
Gradually, we will see how the characters' desires of ambition to obtain Pinochet's fortune are developing, at the same time that the main character's desire to die is developing, however, this decision changes when a nun arrives at the house with whom he will experience new passionate feelings, and that will make the ex-dictator have the desire to live again.
In this story of gothic satire full of love, ambition and power, we will be witnesses as spectators of a dark dance, devoid of humanity and seasoned with betrayal. What will happen to Pinochet? Will he continue to live forever or will he return to his decision to end his life?
La trama
Aquí nos encontraremos con una realidad alterna, centrada en el expresidente dictador Augusto Pinochet, quien gobernó Chile durante el periodo 1973-1990. En este universo, el expresidente Pinochet es retratado como un vampiro, en el que paulatinamente conoceremos su origen. Después de vivir 250 años, decide finalmente dejar de beber sangre para acabar con su privilegio de tener vida eterna, ya que está cansado de que el mundo lo recuerde como un terrible dictador.
La esposa de Pinochet; Lucia Hiriart, una mujer muy inescrupulosa, intenta cambiar la decisión de su marido de acabar con su vida, pero esto es solo un montaje, puesto que ella solo quiere ser inmortal; y le suplica a su esposo que le otorgue ese privilegio.
De repente, en la ciudad de Santiago, ocurren una serie de asesinatos donde a las víctimas se les ha arrancado el corazón de un tajo. Los hijos de Pinochet sospechan que ha sido su padre, y acuden a la mansión donde habita en el sur de América Latina.
Paulatinamente, veremos como se van gestando los deseos de ambición de los personajes por obtener la fortuna de Pinochet, al mismo tiempo que se va desarrollando el anhelo de morir del personaje principal, sin embargo, esta decisión va cambiando, al llegar a la casa una monja con la que experimentará nuevos sentimientos pasionales, y que hará que el exdictador vuelva a tener deseos de vivir.
En esta historia de sátira gótica llena amor, ambición y poder, seremos testigos como espectadores de un baile oscuro, carente de humanidad y aderezado con traición. ¿Qué pasará con Pinochet? ¿Seguirá viviendo para siempre o retomará de nuevo a su decisión de acabar con su vida?
My opinion
As I said before, I have wanted to see this film for a long time; when I saw the advert on YouTube, I was not only interested in it because of the vampirism theme, but also because it uses a very important historical figure that was Augusto Pinochet, giving him a different image, in an intriguing environment and a different purpose. This time, we will see him involved in a gloomy and decadent situation, with a black and white photography that perfectly portrays the ominous atmosphere.
The music was one of the things that fascinated me the most, which went very well with the sinister events that occur during the length of the film. The dialogue is very sophisticated; although I had to put on subtitles, as there was some stammering that got in the way of the characters' intonation.
I liked the way the story unfolded, with a poetic, leisurely sequence, without much hurry. The film qualifies in the horror genre, but here we won't find much of that; there are no 'jumpscares' or scenes with loud sounds that will make you jump out of your chair. It is true that we will find some gore scenes, but it is simply a complement to the plot.
The historical data that we will witness will only focus on the period of Pinochet's government, which highlights acts of corruption, political prisoners, money laundering, blackmail, abuse of power, among other things. It is no secret that director Pablo Larraín, feels no sympathy for this dictator, which we can corroborate with this decadent image of this character, developed in a dark and depressing footage, contrasted only with the humor of satire, further ridiculing his countenance and leaving as a kind of allegory about the corrupt 'monster' that once ruled and that is still latent in society; not only in Chile, but throughout Latin America.
Of all the actors' performances, the most captivating was that of Paula Luchsinger as Carmen; the nun, who steals Pinochet's heart and gives him back the hope of living. Her character; fearless, shrewd and seductive, was what kept me the most intrigued, as she embodied an insidious innocence that spoke of a mysterious greed, which we will discover later on.
For me, Carmen represented the church in Pinochet's time, which did not have much esteem for the dictator, but for his power, which was dragging it down until it was dragged into a nefarious greed. As if it were a Ring of the Nibelungs, betrayal by greed was strongly latent within all areas; both family and external, and it is here where the plot takes force and does not focus solely on the main character.
Mi opinión
Como he dicho antes, he querido ver esta película desde hace tiempo; cuando vi el anuncio por YouTube, no solo me interesó por el tema del vampirismo, sino porque utiliza una figura histórica muy importante que fue Augusto Pinochet, dándole una imagen diferente, en un entorno intrigante y un propósito distinto. Esta vez, lo veremos envuelto en una situación lúgubre y decadente, con una fotografía en blanco y negro que retrata perfectamente el ominoso ambiente.
La música fue una de las cosas que más me fascino, la cual iba muy bien a la par con los sucesos siniestros que se presentan durante la extensión del largometraje. Los diálogos son muy sofisticados; aunque tuve que colocar subtítulos, ya que hubo balbuceos que estorbaban en la entonación de los personajes.
Me gustó la manera en como se fue desarrollando la historia, con una secuencia poética, pausada; sin mucha prisa. La película califica en el género terror, pero aquí no encontraremos mucho de eso; aquí no hay ‘jumpscares’ o escenas con sonidos fuertes que te harán saltar de la silla. Si es cierto que hallaremos algunas escenas gores, pero es simplemente un complemento de la trama.
Los datos históricos que presenciaremos únicamente se enfocarán en el periodo de gobierno de Pinochet, en el que destacan los actos de corrupción, presos políticos, lavado de dinero, chantajes, abuso de poder, entre otras cosas. No es secreto que el director Pablo Larraín, no siente ninguna simpatía por este dictador, lo cual podemos corroborar con esta imagen tan decadente de este personaje, desenvuelto en un metraje oscuro y deprimente, contrastado únicamente con el humor de la sátira, ridiculizando aún más su semblante y dejando como una especie de alegoría sobre el ‘monstruo’ corrupto que alguna vez gobernó y que sigue latente en la sociedad; no solo en la chilena, sino en toda Latinoamérica.
De todas las interpretaciones actorales, la que más cautivó fue la de Paula Luchsinger como Carmen; la monja, quien roba el corazón de Pinochet devolviéndole la esperanza de vivir. Su personaje; intrépido, sagaz y seductor, fue lo que más me mantuvo con la intriga, ya que personificaba una inocencia insidiosa que profería una misteriosa codicia, la cual descubriremos más adelante.
Para mí, Carmen representaba a la iglesia en la época de Pinochet, la cual no tenía mucha estima por el dictador, pero sí por su poder, el cual la fue derruyendo hasta arrastrarla a una codicia nefasta. Como si fuese un Anillo de los Nibelungos, la traición por la avaricia estaba fuertemente latente dentro de todos los ámbitos; tanto familiares como externos, y es aquí donde la trama toma fuerza y no se centra únicamente en el personaje principal.
Conclusions
Larraín's El Conde is not the director's best work, according to the critics, but it is ambitious enough to leave a histrionic mark in the viewer's mind, with black and white photography, gothic and decadent landscapes, which significantly represent the gloomy atmosphere we see. The music plays an important role in the succession of the scenes, placing each propitious melody in the time period of each scene.
More than a horror film, it is a satire on an important historical character and his period of government. With an enticing script and intriguing performances, I'm of the opinion that this film is the best you'll be able to find within Netflix. If you are one of those who like movies with slow sequences and that take their time to reach a climax, then I recommend this work.
Conclusiones
El Conde de Larraín, no es la mejor obra del director, según la crítica, pero es lo suficientemente ambiciosa para dejar una huella histriónica en la mente del espectador, con una fotografía en blanco y negro, paisajes góticos y decadentes, que representan significativamente la atmósfera mustia que divisamos. La música hace un papel importante en la sucesión de las escenas, colocándose cada melodía propicia en el periodo de tiempo de cada escena.
Más que una película de terror, es una sátira sobre un personaje histórico importante y su periodo de gobierno. Con un guion que seduce e interpretaciones intrigantes, opino que este film es lo mejor que podrás encontrar dentro de Netflix. Si eres de los que te gustan las películas con secuencias lentas y que se toman su tiempo para llegar a un clímax, entonces te recomiendo esta obra.
