For some years now, the works of the horror writer, and father of cosmic horror: Howard Phillips Lovecraft, are being adapted to film and television, some suffered a resounding failure, as in the case of the series Lovecraft Country, which did not end up capturing my interest and that of many fans of the writer, but others, have achieved at least a decent work, although not as extraordinary as expected.
I recently saw the movie Venus, which caught my attention for being based on a Lovecraft story that is one of my favorites, and I also saw Cabinet of Curiosities: Dreams in the Witch House, a film that is part of an anthology.
Two different directors based on the same story. Two different visions. Two perceptions of the same work and two stories that have nothing to do with each other. I present to you my comparison of these two films. Which one will be the best? Let's analyze it.
Desde hace unos años para acá, las obras del escritor del terror, padre del horror cósmico: Howard Phillips Lovecraft, están siendo adaptadas al cine y la televisión, algunas sufrieron un rotundo fracaso, como el caso de la serie Lovecraft Country, que no terminó de captar mi interés y la de muchos fanáticos del escritor, pero otras, han logrado por lo menos una obra decente, aunque no tan extraordinaria como se esperaba.
Hace poco vi la película Venus, la cual me llamó la atención por estar basada en un cuento de Lovecraft que es uno de mis favoritos, de la misma manera, también me vi Cabinet of Curiosities: Dreams in the Witch House, una obra cinematográfica parte de una antología.
Dos directores diferentes basándose en una misma historia. Dos visiones distintas. Dos percepciones sobre una misma obra y dos historias que no tienen que ver la una con la otra. Les presento ante ustedes mi comparativa de estas dos películas. ¿Cuál será la mejor? Analicémoslo.
Cabinet of Curiosities: Dreams in the Witch House
It is an American film adaptation belonging to the short story anthology Cabinet of Curiosities of Guillermo del Toro; a production released with a compendium of 8 stories by different directors. Dreams in the Witch House is located in the sixth position of this anthology. It was directed by Catherine Hardwicke and written by Mika Watkins, based on the homonymous work by H.P. Lovecraft.
The cast includes Rupert Grint, as the protagonist, Ismael Cruz Cordova, DJ Qualls, Nia Vardalos, Tenika Davis and Jhene Erwin. The production was carried out by the famous Mexican director Guillermo del Toro, and distributed by the streaming services platform Netflix..
The story is about a male paranormal investigator, who is obsessed with contacting his twin sister, who died when they were both children. After her death, he witnesses a supernatural event that he could never forget, and since then he dedicates himself to proving the existence of the afterlife and even being able to find his sister.
As an adult, he hears rumors about an old, battered, and ancient house, where it is believed that one can enter portals to other worlds through dreams. The protagonist's obsession leads him to this place to stay, however, he must face a much greater danger in which he may lose his life.
El gabinete de curiosidades: Sueños en la casa de la bruja
Es una adaptación cinematográfica estadounidense perteneciente a la antología de cuentos Cabinet of Curiosities of Guillermo del Toro; una producción lanzada con un compendio de 8 historias realizadas por diferentes directores. Dreams in the Witch House se encuentra ubicado en la sexta posición de esta antología. Fue dirigida por Catherine Hardwicke y escrita por Mika Watkins, basándose en la obra homónima de H.P. Lovecraft.
En el reparto se encuentra Rupert Grint, como protagonista, Ismael Cruz Cordova, DJ Qualls, Nia Vardalos, Tenika Davis y Jhene Erwin. La producción fue llevada a cabo por el famoso director mexicano Guillermo del Toro, y distribuida por la plataforma de servicios de streaming Netflix.
La historia trata sobre un hombre investigador de lo paranormal, que está obsesionado con contactarse con su hermana melliza, la cual murió cuando ambos eran niños. Después de su muerte, presencia un evento sobrenatural que jamás pudo olvidar, y desde entonces se dedica a probar la existencia del más allá y hasta incluso poder encontrar a su hermana.
Ya de adulto, escucha rumores sobre una casa vieja, maltrecha y antigua, donde se cree que se puede entrar a portales hacia otros mundos a través de los sueños. La obsesión del protagonista, lo lleva a dicho lugar a hospedarse, sin embargo, deberá enfrentar un peligro mucho mayor en el que puede perder la vida.
Venus
Released in 2022, Venus is a Spanish film directed by Jaume Balagueró (director of REC) and written by himself together with Fernando Navarro. In the cast, we will have Ester Expósito, as the main character, together with Inés Fernández, Ángela Cremonte, Magüi Mira, Fernando Valdivieso, Federico Aguado and Alejandra Meco.
The film is a co-production between Spain and the United States, under the production company The Fear Collection and distributed by Sony Pictures Spain.
The story, in this case, is about a young night dancer who tries to make a big score by stealing large amounts of ecstasy pills, however, she is discovered by one of the mobsters who control the club where she works. Wounded and with little chance of survival, she manages to take refuge in an apartment building in the center of Madrid, where her sister and niece live.
After spending some time there, she discovers that strange things are happening in the building. A malignant and hungry force crawls along the walls causing frightening dreams and terrible hallucinations. Lucia, the protagonist, must now try to protect her family from these supernatural entities, while at the same time, she must protect herself from the gangsters who are after her.

En el reparto tendremos a Ester Expósito, como protagonista, junto a Inés Fernández, Ángela Cremonte, Magüi Mira, Fernando Valdivieso, Federico Aguado y Alejandra Meco.
La película es una co-producción entre España y Estados Unidos, bajo la productora The Fear Collection y distribuida por Sony Pictures España.
La historia en este caso, trata sobre una joven bailarina nocturna que intenta dar un gran golpe robándose grandes cantidades de pastillas de éxtasis, sin embargo, es descubierta por uno de los mafiosos que controlan el club donde trabaja. Herida y con pocas posibilidades de sobrevivir, logra refugiarse en un edificio de apartamentos en el centro de Madrid, en donde viven su hermana y su sobrina.
Al pasar un tiempo allí, descubre que en el edificio suceden cosas extrañas. Una fuerza maligna y hambrienta se arrastra por las paredes provocando sueños espantosos y alucinaciones terribles. Lucía, la protagonista, ahora deberá intentar proteger a su familia de aquellas entidades sobrenaturales, a la vez que debe resguardarse de los mafiosos que la persiguen.
Comparison
Both are different stories based on the same tale, but it is obvious that the quality of one and the other is abysmal. Hardwicke's work shows a more artistic and supernatural side, with elements typical of Guillermo del Toro's symbology, which is his trademark. On the other hand, Balagueró's work is more bloodthirsty, even exaggerated and absurd in some situations, and instead of disturbing you, it makes you laugh.
In the make-up, we have a better appreciation of the story of Cabinet of Curiosities, because we have a very graphic and significantly more realistic vision, with those fantastic and well-achieved touches, especially in the structure of the antagonist character and the way he was represented. In Venus, I don't see well-prepared makeup, but rather rough and ordinary. At first glance, we see obvious details that do not raise the imagination at all and that only let us understand the low budget or the little investment they made in this resource for the film.
The beauty of the photography in Cabinet of Curiosities: Dreams in the Witch House is simply superior to that of Venusbecause in terms of angles and colors, we can perceive a quite marked difference, as in the first one we can see a dark and gloomy atmosphere all the time, in the second one everything seems always tied to a clarity; besides, this aspect was the one I appreciated the least in Venus.
I found the performances in both films to be good and convincing. I think the protagonist in each film did a peculiar job in exposing emotions to give us, the viewers, the necessary convincing, so for this part, I can't say much, although some scenes in Venus, which seemed to me more like filler, than actually contributing something.
The script in Cabinet of Curiosities: Dreams in the Witch House is closer to the original tale, using characters of its own with a touch of trademark macabre humor and pretty good special effects. In Venus, on the other hand, goes in a different direction, sticking to the film's script and using a few elements from Lovecraft's work; besides, the effects are not as good, and you can notice the CGI a mile away.
In Hardwicke's film work, we will find a more solid, interesting story; a little strange at some points, but that does not lower its quality. On the other hand, in Balagueró, as we watch the film, we will find more and more incoherent things. Gore can be fun, but in the extreme and in circumstances where it no longer makes sense, it can get tired and boring.
As I said, the difference is huge, and if we start talking about the ending, it's even bigger. What I have seen in Venus, is that it tried to be more original, but its execution did not produce the satisfaction that was required; especially when we talk about adapting cosmic horror, those elements that the director placed in the film did not seem appropriate to me.
Comparativa
Ambas son historias diferentes basadas en un mismo cuento, pero es obvio que la calidad de una y la otra es abismal. El trabajo de Hardwicke muestra una parte más artística y sobrenatural, con elementos propios de la simbología de Guillermo del Toro, que es su marca personal. En cambio, la obra de Balagueró, es más sanguinaria, incluso llega a ser exagerado y absurdo en cuanto algunas situaciones, que en vez de perturbarte lo que da es risa.
En el maquillaje, tenemos una mejor apreciación en la historia de Cabinet of Curiosities, pues tenemos una visión bastante gráfica y significativamente más realista, con esos toques fantásticos y bien logrados, especialmente en la estructura del personaje antagonista y la forma en como fue representado. En Venus, no veo un maquillaje bien preparado, sino más bien tosco y ordinario. A simple vista se ven detalles obvios que no elevan para nada la imaginación y que solo nos dejan entender el bajo presupuesto o la poca inversión que hicieron en este recurso para la película.
La belleza de la fotografía en Cabinet of Curiosities: Dreams in the Witch House es simplemente superior a la de Venus, pues en cuanto a ángulos y colores, podemos percibir una diferencia bastante marcada, pues en la primera se denota un ambiente oscuro y tenebroso todo el tiempo, en la segunda todo parece siempre atado a una claridad; además que este aspecto fue el que menos aprecié de Venus.
Las actuaciones en ambas películas me parecieron buenas, y hasta convincentes. Creo que el protagonista de cada película hizo un trabajo peculiar en la exposición de emociones para darnos a nosotros, los espectadores, el convencimiento necesario, así que por esta parte no puedo decir mucho, aunque algunas escenas en Venus, que me parecieron más como relleno, a que en realidad aportaran algo.
El guion de Cabinet of Curiosities: Dreams in the Witch House es más apegado al cuento original, usando a personajes propios con un toque de humor macabro característico y con efectos especiales bastante buenos. En Venus, en cambio, se va tomando otra dirección, apegándose nada más al guion de la película y usando pocos elementos de la obra de Lovecraft; además de que los efectos no son tan buenos, se puede notar el CGI a leguas.
En la obra cinematográfica de Hardwicke, vamos a encontrar una historia más sólida, interesante; algo extraña en algunos puntos, pero que no le baja la calidad. En cambio, en la de Balagueró, a medida que vamos viendo la película, hallaremos cosas cada vez más incoherentes. El gore puede ser divertido, pero en extremo y en circunstancias donde ya no tiene sentido, puede llegar a cansar y aburrir.
Como dije, la diferencia es enorme, y si nos ponemos a hablar del final, es todavía más grande. Lo que yo he visto en Venus, es que intentaba ser más original, pero su ejecución no produjo la satisfacción que se requería; especialmente cuando hablamos de hacer una adaptación sobre horror cósmico, esos elementos que el director colocó en la película no me parecieron apropiados.
The End
The quality of the ending of each film, you can see. You don't have to be a movie expert to know which one is better. The end of Cabinet of Curiosities: Dreams in the Witch House is more humorous and ironic, for many it may be an unexpected twist that will surprise them, and it may even make them laugh as it did me.
On the other hand, Venus also concludes with humor, but not with a good comedy, because it only gives you a laugh, but a pitying laugh because of how bad it was. I found it so incoherent with the rest of the story; apart from the fact that they put animated music already during the last minutes of the movie. I already thought the film was terrible, but that ending was the cherry on top of a stale cake that I just want to avoid.
El Final
La calidad del final de cada película, se puede ver claramente. No tienes que ser un experto en cine para saber cuál es mejor. El de Cabinet of Curiosities: Dreams in the Witch House es más humorístico e irónico, para muchos puede resultar un giro inesperado que los sorprenderá, además puede hasta causarles risas como a mí.
En cambio, en Venus también concluye con humor, pero no con una comedia de la buena, pues solo te da risa, pero una risa de lástima de lo malo que fue. Me pareció tan incoherente con el resto de la historia; aparte de que colocan una música animada ya durante los últimos minutos película. Ya de por sí el filme me pareció malo, pero ese final fue la cereza de un pastel rancio que solo quiero evitar.
Conclusions
There is no denying which one is better. We know that Guillermo del Toro is a director with a trajectory and that he focuses on the details to shock the viewer. Catherine Hardwicke, following this same vision and understanding the essence of Lovecraft's cosmic horror, presents us with a good work, with a story that does not get lost in the plot and a touch of strange and macabre humor.
Balaqueró, with its gore touch, in which it tries to mix black humor with the disturbing, seems to lack being more attached to the supernatural. The lousy makeup and CGI in the film were already points against it, and it was disappointing not to find more solid plots within the story.
To be more direct, my conclusion is that Venus sucks, and Cabinet of Curiosities: Dreams in the Witch House was decent, since I didn't think it was anything out of the ordinary either, but it's better than the movie it goes against in this post.

Conclusiones
No se puede negar cual es mejor. Sabemos que Guillermo del Toro es un director con trayectoria y que se enfoca en los detalles para una conmoción en el espectador. Catherine Hardwicke, siguiendo esta misma visión y comprendiendo la esencia del horror cósmico de Lovecraft, nos presenta un trabajo bueno, con una historia que no se pierde en la trama y un toque de humor extraño y macabro.
Balaqueró, con su toque gore, en el que intenta mezclar el humor negro con lo perturbador, parece que le falta ser más apegado a lo sobrenatural. El pésimo maquillaje y el CGI en la película ya fueron puntos en contra, y fue decepcionante no encontrar argumentos más sólidos dentro de la historia.
Para ser más directo, mi conclusión es que Venus es malísima y Cabinet of Curiosities: Dreams in the Witch House estuvo decente, pues tampoco me pareció algo fuera de lo común, pero es obvio que es mejor que la película en la que va en contra en esta publicación.
