Bulbbul es un filme de terror Indio con un toque de fantasía que tiene una crítica social que a más de uno dejara pensativo. La mezcla del horror que puede existir en la vida real con un estilo fantasioso oscuro crean una historia de venganza fascinante para el espectador.
"Una niña se convierte en una mujer enigmática que gobierna sobre su hogar, ocultando su pasado doloroso, mientras los asesinatos sobrenaturales de hombres se producen en el sitio donde vive", es la sinopsis que Netflix nos ofrece. Suena interesante, ¿cierto?
Yo amo el cine Indio, quienes me conocen saben que disfruto mucho de las producciones de Bollywood, pero nunca había visto un filme de terror producido por ellos, así que cuando vi la promo de Bulbbul en Netflix no dude en verla.
Bulbbul is an Indian horror film with a touch of fantasy that has a social critique that will leave more than one person thoughtful. The mixture of horror that can exist in real life with a dark fantasy style creates a fascinating story of revenge for the viewer.
"A girl becomes an enigmatic woman who rules over her home, hiding her painful past, while supernatural murders of men take place where she lives", that's the synopsis Netflix offers us. Sounds interesting, doesn't it?
I love Indian cinema, those who know me already know that I really enjoy Bollywood productions but I had never seen a horror film produced by them, so when I saw the promo of Bulbbul on Netflix I didn't hesitate to watch it.
El filme está ambientado en el año 1881 y nuestra protagonista es Bulbbul, quien comienza como una dulce niña de 5 años a la que casan con un hombre adinerado mientras ella piensa que se está casando con un niño de edad similar a la de ella (nos encontramos en la India del siglo 19, el matrimonio infantil era considerado algo común).
Bulbbul termina siendo llevada a una mansión donde vivirá con su ahora esposo, el hermano gemelo de su esposo (que tiene discapacidad mental), su cuñada y cuñado, siendo este último Satya, el pequeño niño con el que creyó que se casaba y con el que entabla una bonita amistad hasta que se hacen adultos.
Pasan los años, Satya y Bulbbul crean una íntima amistad (tiene sentido porque en esa mansión no vive mucha gente), crecieron juntos por lo que Bulbbul termina desarrollando sentimientos románticos hacia él, razón por la cual el esposo de Bulbbul y hermano mayor de Satiya lo envía a Londres para que se separen, aunque entre estos dos realmente no ha pasado nada.
Muchas cosas suceden en la ausencia de Satya, este cuando regresa se encuentra con la realidad de que su hermano se había ido, su otro hermano (el que tiene discapacidad mental) había sido asesinado y ahora Bulbbul es la señora de la casa. También en el pueblo hay un rumor de que una bruja de pies volteados habita en el bosque y se cree que ella es la que está cometiendo los asesinatos.
Todo una trama, ¿cierto?
The film is set in the year 1881 and our protagonist is Bulbbul, who starts out as a sweet 5-year-old girl who is married off to a wealthy man while she thinks she is marrying a boy of similar age to her (we are in 19th century India, child marriage was considered commonplace).
Bulbbul ends up being taken to a mansion where she will live with her now husband, her husband's twin brother (who is mentally disabled), her sister-in-law and brother-in-law, the latter being Satya, the little boy she thought she was marrying and with whom she develops a beautiful friendship until they become adults.
Years go by, Satya and Bulbbul create a close friendship (it makes sense because not many people live in that mansion), they grew up together so Bulbbul ends up growing romantic feelings towards him, reason why Bulbbul's husband and Satiya's older brother sends him to London to separate them, although nothing has really happened between these two.
Many things happen in Satya's absence, when he returns he finds the reality that his brother is gone, his other brother (the one with mental disability) has been killed and now Bulbbul is the mistress of the house. Also in town there is a rumor that a foot-turned witch dwells in the forest and she is believed to be the one committing the murders.
Quite a plot, isn't it?
La película es fácil de ver, no es excesivamente larga y cuenta la historia de forma exacta. Al tratar el filme sobre nuestra protagonista principal, se enfoca más que todo en ella y en como se convirtió en alguien tan enigmática después de ser tan risueña (por algo la película se llama Bulbbul). El personaje no encaja en como se supone debe comportarse una mujer en esa época, lo que la hace sufrir consecuencias injustas.
Una de las cosas que llama la atención de esta película es que se desarrolla entre flashbacks y escenas del presente, pero esto no la hace confusa, sino que contribuye a crear ese ambiente de fantasía nostálgico. El color rojo y azul están muy presentes, el rojo se usa más que todo en la noche como para crear un ambiente ominoso y el azul se hace notorio en los flashbacks.
La escenografía de la película de verdad que es hermosa, a mi parecer las películas Indias tienen escenarios espectaculares, en este caso es bastante destacable pues contribuye a la estética fantasiosa y misteriosa que se quiere crear.
The film is easy to watch, not overly long and tells the story precisely. Since the film is about our main protagonist, it focuses mostly on her and how she became so enigmatic after being so cheerful (there's a reason the film is called Bulbbul). The character doesn't fit in with how a woman is supposed to behave in that era, which causes her to suffer unfair consequences.
One of the things that is interesting about this film is that it takes place between flashbacks and scenes from the present, but this does not make it confusing, but rather contributes to create that nostalgic fantasy atmosphere. The color red and blue are very present, red is used mostly at night to create an ominous atmosphere and blue is noticeable in the flashbacks.
The scenery of the film is really beautiful, in my opinion Indian films have spectacular scenery, in this case it is quite remarkable because it contributes to the fantasy and mysterious aesthetic that is intended to create.

Como mencione más arriba, la película tiene una crítica social, esta gira en torno al sufrimiento que muchas mujeres enfrentan a causa de los hombres. Temas como el matrimonio infantil, el abuso y el minimizar a la mujer son representados con mucha gracia en este filme. Lamentablemente, los problemas sociales que se abordan aún prevalecen hoy día en muchos lugares.
Esta es una película de terror y fantasía, pero aborda temas reales que muchas veces llegan a ser el verdadero terror.
Para culminar, quiero aclarar que esta película no es un musical, lo que la hace diferente a otras películas de Bollywood, ya que la mayoría suelen ser musicales.
As I mentioned above, the film has a social critique, which revolves around the suffering that many women face because of men. Issues such as child marriage, abuse and minimizing women are portrayed very gracefully in this film. Sadly, the social problems addressed are still prevalent in many places today.
This is a horror/fantasy film, but it addresses real issues that often become the real terror.
Finally, I want to clarify that this film is not a musical, which makes it different from other Bollywood films, as most of them are usually musicals.
