Good early morning Movies&Tvshows community👋, since I was a child I consider myself a multicultural person (to put it in a way), I appreciate the artistic content that people from different countries and cultures make, particularly I have always been fascinated by Asian countries and today I want to tell you that I love Bollywood and its productions, so I come with a brief review without spoilers of one of my favorite movies that has come out in recent times, Padmavaat. It is a very well done period drama, which I'm sure, will not leave you indifferent.
Padmavaat was released in the year 2018, I was keeping a close eye on its release as I'm a fan of actress Deepika Padukone so I watched it soon after it was released. It was directed by the famous and award-winning Indian director Sanjay Leela Bhansali, who is known for usually making great period films and actually, he usually casts Deepika (Padmavati) and Ranver (Sultan Alauddin) in the lead roles in his films quite often.
Before the film was released I was a bit worried when I read about its production, because since it was based on historical facts it created a controversy due to the different points of view of religious groups that had different cultural visions about how the film was being produced (the historical facts about everything that happened have different versions that although their foundation is similar, it creates doubts about the veracity of certain events) and there were even death threats against the director and the main actors. Fortunately, nothing bad happened, the film was released and was very well received.
The film is a period drama that has a lot of action and musical numbers (musical numbers are very common in Bollywood films and I personally love it, I find it very artistic), it is based on a famous epic literary poem with the same name written by Sufi Malik Muhammad Jayasi that talks mainly about the queen Padmavati (Rani Padmini), her great beauty and bravery in standing firm against the vile sultan Alauddin Khilji and his desire to possess her. I'm not a historian friends, but I feel I must mention out of respect that there is doubt about the real existence of Rani Padmini, it is known that Sultan Alauddin and Padmavati's husband are real, in fact they are great historical figures, but it is not known for sure if Padmavati existed, as it is said that everything could have been an allegory, that was also part of the controversy I mentioned above.
All the films directed by Sanjay Leela Bhansali that I have seen are (for me) impeccably produced, the performances, costumes and set designs are wonderful, everything is very clean, detailed and visually beautiful, Padmavaat was not left behind in these aspects.
Actress Deepika Padukone seems to me to be perfect to play Rani Padmini, she acts very well in period films, I feel her beauty and dancing skills fit this kind of stories. Ranveer Singh as Sultan Alauddin I also think was spot on, it's not common to see Ranver playing a villain, but I thought he did very well, his physique and how he was styled did inspire the vibe of a person with evil intentions. Shahid Kapoor for his first time working with Bhansali, did very well with his portrayal of Padmavati's husband Ratan Singh.
The film shows us a very well achieved female character, powerful, who respects herself and is not afraid to fight for her honor, it also makes us see a harsh reality that existed in those times where women were seen as objects of desire (it still happens, but we know how hard everything was in ancient times) and how that led to atrocious acts, causing women to take extreme actions.
The ending, although crude, has a powerful message of honor and virtue, I think that although it is a shame that everything ended that way, it is inspiring in the sense that the women in the film stood firm and dignified, as I mentioned before, they never lost their honor.
If you like period films with great stories to tell and don't mind musical numbers, I'm sure you'll like Padmavaat, plus it's always good to see films from other countries with different cultures, I feel it's enlightening.
I hope you give Padmavaat a chance, thanks for reading me 🌻.
