Nowhere (2023) is a survival thriller, this is the kind of movie that turns a survival story into a deeply emotional movie and the movie Nowhere made me curious and hoping for a redemption or rescue until the end. Nowhere (2023) is a Spanish survival thriller that was directed by Albert Pintó and starring Anna Castillo, the main character as Mia.
Mia a pregnant woman, who her due date for birth was close, found herself trapped in the middle of a sea, inside a shipping container. She had very limited supply, no one to help her, and she was surrounded by danger and Mia tried to survive this situation against all odds. She tried to fight for her survival and the survival of her child in the midst of danger, in a drifting container, no health supply or food supply.
The film starts in a world where people are trying to escape for safety and to escape oppression in a dystopian world. Mia and her husband, called Nico set out to escape together in a container through the sea, but they were separated and that was where the plan they had together was scattered and now Mia is left alone to embark on a journey that made her the only survivor trying to survive in the container, and eventually she finds herself inside a container floating in an ocean and completely far from the outside world.
I enjoyed every scene in this movie, regardless of the fact that it was set inside a container, limited characters, the movie still created a tension and curiosity to see what happens in every scene. The confined environment where this movie was set never made it feel boring to me. Instead, I saw that container floating in the middle of an ocean as a small prison, where small issues could be a life or death situation for Mia. She lacked food, network, oxygen, and even drinkable water, and I just kept seeing how determined a pregnant woman was to survive. Mia found herself fighting desperately to survive a tough situation alone.
Anna Castillo, did a great job in executing her role as Mia. Her performance was great. Her character was full of determination to survive with her child, despite the fact that she was scared, exhausted, and vulnerable, that strength she displayed, to ensure her and her baby came out of the situation alive, the decision she made to survive, the risk and fear she overcame to ensure they got longer days in the container before it eventually sank, her efforts to call for help and determination to never give up. The director did a great job in letting the viewers know Mia was scared, but wasn't helpless.
Anna's fight for survival wasn't only for herself, but her unborn child. She protected the child and fought for survival because of her child and this passes a great message about motherhood. This movie didn't just explore the theme of motherhood, but also explored the theme of human resilience, hope and sacrifice. Mia reason to fight was for her unborn child, and when she eventually gave birth she protected and shielded her child too. It's really an emotional movie , it goes beyond just being a survival thriller.
However, this movie made me to suspend my disbelief at some scenes, because they those scenes really felt exaggerated and unbelievable to me. The character Mia made certain decisions to survive that felt really unreal to me and most viewers too, but I just had to keep believing, because it's a movie and I had to keep watching because I still found it interesting ti watch. This weakness or flaws of this movie doesn't take away the emotional impact the movie created.
Visually, the restricted space in this movie didn't make it less interesting to watch, the large/ endless ocean, the isolation and loneliness it created made me more anxious and curious about Mia fate. The director uses sound devices to strengthen the viewer's feeling that Mia is all alone and this created tense and curiosity for me watching this movie.
Overall, the movie Nowhere (2023) is an emotional and survival thriller that's thought provoking. The movie shows the danger and fear a determined mother who's alone and pregnant had to go through to protect her unborn child, her strength and instinct to survive for days in a floating container with her child. While some parts of this movie might feel unreal, it kept me clued to my screen to see how Mia survives this situation.
I will be rating the movie Nowhere (2023), 80/ 100.
