The Possession of Hannah Grace(2018) is a dark and supernatural horror movie, a movie that is set in a morgue, a claustrophobic setting, the movie is full of suspense and scary moments. The movie is directed by Diederik Van Rooijen, the storyline follows Shay Mitchell as Megan Reed, she is a struggling police officer who's fighting with a personal demon , she works at a morgue, and a night shift security guard at the morgue. This decision was taken to rebuild her life, but it turned into a very terrifying nightmare when the body of possessed Grace Hannah arrived at the morgue when she was on duty.
The movie already creates a tense and unsettling location, the morgue is naturally a scary environment and, even in reality, people are curious about how staff who work in morgues do it. The movie also made use of corridor lights to create suspense and tension, dim lightening in most passages, a constant sense of isolation and fear, and empty rooms.
Megan the security guard is often alone, she's just surrounded by corpses and the moment a very suspicious and demonic one joined it, made the movie really creepy, scary and full of tension. Every scene in this movie seemed threatening to me, the tension was built through silence, not by shouts or screams and the uncertainty of knowing what's behind and hunting the Megan.
The mystery surrounding the dead body of Hannah is one of the movie's greatest strengths, the mystery remained very unpredictable and hidden. Her body tends to move, appear, disappear, and do things to satisfy its crave for blood. And Hannah trying to investigate what was happening around her was really complex, and she realized she had to fight for survival, because whatsoever was behind Hannah's possession was dangerous.
Shay Mitchell did a good performance as Megan, her character was vulnerable, yet determined to fight what was unknown, and realizing she had a troubled past made this movie more emotional and made her doubt herself. She was trying to gain control over her life and also fighting a supernatural force and this gave the viewers a reason to care about her and her hopes for survival.
Also, the performance of Kirby Johnson as Hannah Grace isn't just a regular performance, her performance was excellent, it is one of the memorable aspects of this movie to me . Her movement and every action was very unnatural, and she created an eerie and frightening presence whenever she appeared on the screen. She really made the dead corpse feel genuinely scary and disturbing to the viewers.
However, the movie isn't without weaknesses, especially for viewers who are familiar with supernatural horror, I believe certain plot developments lack proper details and would have been explored more and this made the movie lack some depth and potential. Some supporting characters felt very underdeveloped, we only saw them when the movie had gone a long way.
Regardless of the weaknesses, The Possession of Hannah Grace(2018) created an entertaining and creepy horror experience for the viewers, the morgue setting made it really different from many supernatural horror movies I have watched, the dark cinematography and unsettling sound created the right atmosphere for the movie.
In conclusion, The Possession of Hannah Grace(2018) offers the viewers a fresh and unique setting, strong visual horror and an effective cast performance. It's a really enjoyable movie for viewers who enjoy supernatural horror with a dark, contained atmosphere and plenty of suspense.
I will be rating The Possession of Hannah Grace(2018) a 75/100, the movie is really worth watching.
