Today I was in search of a new Nollywood movie I can watched on Netflix and during my search of that category, I stumbled on "Ada Omo Daddy", I movie I watched about two years ago and it reminds me of my opinion about the movie being one of few Nigerian movies have has been able to combine family, comedy, culture and drama all together to make a story feels more emotionally complicated. The storyline of the movie is most focus on around Ada, who happens to be a young lady preparing for her wedding and it was during that period that her two different family backgrounds come to the limelight. The beauty of this movie comes from how different cultures, personalities and traditions crashes and this actually portray what usually happens here in Nigeria when two families comes together, especially when they've of different culture.
Like I said, the movie storyline captures some reality we witnessed almost on a daily basis, especially those about Nigerian family dynamics, where you'll have some parents trying to influence on have their way in your life, to relatives who felt have they the right to input their opinion in every matters, many of these scenes are just to familiar with what I see daily in my own family and those of people around me. Like I said it's a mix of comedy, culture and the likes, the comedy aspect comes from some of the movies characters interactions, and when this plays out you can't help but laugh out loud, one thing I love though is how the comic aspect didn't take away the serious theme the movie is focused on, which are identity, acceptance and family.
To be honest, I was actually angry with Ada who after learning about his biological father, run to he and his family and almost abandoned those who raised him for years, despite knowing fully well what we mother went through in the hand of her so called biological father and how he threw both of them out when she was just about two months old. But then, I personally understand what it means going through that phrase and uncertainty, given the nature of how I grew up faraway from my parents myself, but then I felt she should have done better.
Beyond that, the cultural representation by each character and the storyline is one that I believe stood out, especially with how it'll give viewers that are not Nigerians to catch a glimpse of what Nigeria cultures and traditions can be like, how also how different backgrounds can create tension, especially when marriage is in the equation. One important lessons the movie ultimately leaves us with is why we shouldn't turn family into a battleground just because we all are from different tribes, background and the likes.
Although I must state the fact that the movie has some shortcomings, especially some scenes are seen to overstretched, some that while predictable and the likes, however, beyond all that, Ada Omo Daddy Is still a very much enjoyable Nigerian family related movie that's not only entertaining but also relatable and with funny moments that makes us laugh.
