The film is about 10-year-old girl named Anna Beam (Kylie Rogers) but her family and friends call her Anna, one day she begins to vomit and the doctor who examines her does not get anything normal. Another day Anna awakens her parents at midnight because she presented a strong abdominal pain, strong enough so that her father decided to take her to the hospital.
The doctors did not find a diagnosis of her illness, just said that it was a gastric reflux or she could be intolerant to the lactose, but she was not convinced of that. The next morning, Her Mother, Christy Beam (Jennifer Garner) finally finds a pediatrician in the hospital that can diagnose that Anna suffers from abdominal obstruction, and he tells her that she must be operated immediately or she will die.
After emergency surgery is performed, the doctor explains that Anna has stayed with a pseudo-destruction disorder and can not eat, so power tubes are needed for her nutrition. Then, the doctor tells the Beams about the most important pediatric gastroenterologist in the United States, Dr. Samuel Nurko (Eugenio Derbez), who exercises in Boston, but explains that they could spend months until he sees them. Later, Christy and Anna travel to Boston despite not having an appointment with the doctor.
Dr. Nurko has a last minute opening, and when Anna is subsequently examined at Boston Children's Hospital, the scope of her chronic disease is discovered. She then passes through an extensive treatment. During this terrible experience, Anna and her mother become friends of a local resident of Massachusetts called Angela Bradford (Queen Latifah), as well as Ben (Wayne PerΓ©) and her daughter, Haley (Hannah Alligood) who suffers from cancer .
One Day, Anna, along with her older sister Abbie (Brighton Sharbino), climbed up a very high branch of an old tree. While they are on that branch, it begins to break, then Abbie orders Anna to go to the trunk for safety, after leaning on it, she falls from a hole to the base of the tree. When Christy discovers what happened, she desperately calls her husband Kevin (Martin Henderson) and the fire department. Anna is rescued by the firemen, who warn Christy to wait for the worst, saying that no one could fall thirty feet without suffering a serious injury; Broken bones or paralysis. Once outside, Anna is taken by plane to a hospital, where she is made a series of tests, and all tests are negative. In addition to a minor brain shock, Anna is not hurt.
At some point after the fall of it, Anna no longer seems to be affected by her illness. When Christy and Anna visited Dr. Nurko, he told Christy that Anna is totally cured and its was totally unbelievable and he had no explanation for it. Anna then tells with her parents the experience she had during the autumn. She describes how her soul left her body during her fall, and God promised her that she would cure her's illness on her back to Earth. In the church, Christy shares the story of how God miraculously healed her daughter with her love. When Christy finishes her speech, one of the protest congressmen, affirming that he does not believe Christy. Ben, who traveled from Boston to listen to Anna's story, believe him and reveals him that Haley died at peace because Anna gave her the faith of her when she was in the hospital, making Anna cry for the news, since Hayley was her best friend.
