As a student, I lived in an apartment with 14 others guys and girls for 4.5 years. I was known there as the movie guy and often picked a movie for a group of us to watch in our shared living room/ kitchen.
I remember that, for a while, we had a very young girl, that most would describe as a goth (not to be confused with God) living with us. Let's just say that she liked to wear black clothes and all.
Around that time, I started to get very interested into so called Giallo movies - an Italian subgenre of horror/ thriller movies, usually involving black gloved (serial) killers and pretty women. These films were actually influenced by British and American mystery books with a yellow cover (giallo is Italian for that color). hence the name.
And now over to Suspiria
I recommended this movie to my goth roommate. Suspiria was the first giallo film that I watched and the one that made me a huge fan of this subgenre. The girl was really into horror and I believe she enjoyed that film.
When she moved to another place, a year or so later, she took my DVD of Suspiria with her. I never got it back. And it kind of sucked, as it was one of my very favorite movies.
P.S. Quite a lot of my films got lost this way, as many people used to borrow movies from me. Now I'm kind of a minimalist, I don't really care about those things anymore but I definitely did, back then.
And here's a little side story
I tried hard to educate my little brother (who isn't little anymore but 9 years younger than I) with all kinds of movies. I believe I did a decent job in that department.
I remember showing him Suspiria one night. Trying to explain to him that it was so much more than a horror movie. That it is actually a piece of art. I myself find it very beautiful and extremely satisfying to watch, for so many reasons. From cinematography, to set design, to colors, to plot, to the overall mood and so on and so forth.
He didn't especially enjoy it. And you know what, that's alright. If people don't like something that you love, you don't need to change their minds. Although there are some exceptions, I guess.
Conclusion:
This is one of my very favorite movies. It's from my favorite movie decade, the 70s and I love it for many different reasons.
Who knows, you might like it too.
