This is not a kids movie. It's a movie with a kid as one of the protagonists. And it's very good. So I recommend that you stay with me here.
As I am leaving for Berlin in a day and a half, I thought I'd recommend a German movie for a change. I talked a little bit about German director Werner Herzog before - in one of my posts on sci-fi films - but I don't remember to have mentioned his fellow countryman Wim Wenders before.
I'm not sure if the work of Wim Wenders is a little less known outside Germany and/ or Europe than Werner Herzog's, but I for sure learnt about his body of work when studying film history. Looking back on his oeuvre, I definitely admire Wim Wenders' 70s work. Although most people will probably know him from his 80s movies, like the American production: Paris, Texas (one of my favorite films) or Der Himmel Uber Berlin.
There was a time that I watched a couple of 70s Wim Wenders movies in a row. I used to binge watch directors, back in the days. This movie left an impression.
Looking back at the trailer - that you can find below - it was probably the mix between a road movie, the natural performance of this great little kid and the fact that the guy in the film is a creative, a photographer, that attracted me. They are all elements that I can easily identify with, being a somewhat childish, creative drifter myself.
Here's the movie's tagline on IMDb:
A German journalist is saddled with a nine-year-old girl after encountering her mother at a New York airport. Source
If you aren't convinced yet, try watching the trailer:
Some great movies with a kid as (one of) the protagonists:
- Lolita (1962) - Paper Moon (1973) - Spirit of the Beehive (1973) - Cria Cuervos (1976) - Grave of the Fireflies (1988) - Léon: The Professional (1994)
