How can I be quiet about this? It is the film that opened my eyes to the infinite possibilities of cinema. I discovered that there existed this sweet spot where art and movies met and blended into something incredible. I learnt that movies could be art too. That story wasn't the main ingredient.
From the amazing and sometimes haunting soundtrack to its picturesque look. From story, to theme, to overall mood. From acting - and sometimes overacting - to all the (layers of) emotions that it triggered and still triggers in me... This film hits the maximum score in all departments. I would call this a cinematic masterpiece.
I fell in love with cinema
This is the movie that made me fall in love with cinema. Until that moment, I really enjoyed movies. When I sat down in the little arthouse cinema - where I had to watch a number of movies (in order to study them) for film class - and the lights went down and Blue Velvet started, I was mesmerized from the first second onwards. When the movie was finished and the lights switched on again, I was a different person. From that moment onwards, I knew that movies could be more than just enjoyable, entertaining or exciting. It was possible to actually fall in love with them.
I wanted to make movies myself
It was Blue Velvet that made me decide I wanted to become a filmmaker myself. If it was possible to make movies like these, there was definitely hope for a somewhat crazy and often misunderstood creative like me. It still took me almost a decade - besides some half baked attempts - before I really started on my filmmaking mission. And, for the time being, I'm back to writing about films. But let's save my filmmaking story for a later time.
Even seeing this trailer, makes me shiver. A mix of nostalgia and the overall intensity of this film slowly gets to me. Click on the link and give this a look yourself. Then let me know what you feel...
Or, watch the opening scene, that immediately sets the tone. It is full of contrasts and shows you what you can expect from this movie as well as the overall work of the legendary David Lynch:
