Recently, I discovered an old shoebox with a lot of creative memories. Mainly short film screenplays and other film ideas that I have written over the last 10 to 15 years. In that box, I also found a little film journal. I used that to take some notes on the movies that I watched from October 2010 to mid 2012 or so.
It is nice to leaf through these pages and find out what films I watched back then and how I liked them. Furthermore, it is a different approach from using my Letterboxd profile or just my (movie) memory.
I just started browsing through this book a little and picked a page with a movie that I remember to have enjoyed:
The movie that I chose, is 10 Rillington Place
As most of you probably can't read Dutch and might be reading this on a tiny screen, I will elaborate a bit on the notes that I took on this film back in June 2011:
It's a British thriller, based on a true-life serial killer story. The film is directed by Richard Fleischer who I describe as one of the most versatile directors. I have to admit that I had to check his resume just now, as my movie knowledge is a little dusty these days. Fleischer is known for films like 20,000 Leagues under the Sea, The Boston Strangler (with a somewhat similar theme to this film) and Soylent Green (one of my favorite 70s sci-fi movies). I consider this to be one of his very best movies.
What else?
I penned down the following:
Incredible that this film is so unknown and was hardly noticed back then.
Anthony Hopkins has clearly been inspired by Richard Attenborough's performance (in 10 Rillington Place). Loads of parallels with Silence of the Lambs.
So, if you like Silence of the Lambs, you should definitely give this a chance one day.
Perfectly acted and claustrophobic, gruesome tale/ depiction of a slice of life of the 'unknown' serial killer.
Near the end of the movie, my eyes were filled with tears (Something that doesn't happen to me often).
Anyone who knows me well enough, will agree with the above. Crying is almost impossible for me. So if something moves me to tears, it has definitely made an impact.
A Masterpiece
Score: 4.5 out of 5 stars
I will end it here with the trailer of this film. I hope that the above has told you enough to decide whether to watch or not to watch 10 Rillington Place. And, in case you have actually seen it before and remember it well enough, feel free to share your view on this movie as a comment on this post...
