Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets is a new movie directed by fabulous Luc Besson.

Despite the fact that the actors are so-so, I decided to go to the film to pay tribute to the director who gave us The Fifth Element and Leon. He was a producer of Taxi, Wasabi, The Transporter and so on. His last films was awful. But I can not refuse the person who filmed The Fifth Element.

"Valérian et Laureline" is the popular french comics. It was published since 1943 and of course young Luc Besson being a fan of this fantastic world. "Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets" is the most expensive film of French cinematograph, so let's find out is it worth watching or not?

I think the movie review should be divided into 2 parts: the actors and the visual component.

CAST

Among the thousands of computer characters, Cara Delevingne and Dane DeHaan one of the few "alive" actors. So, they pay even more attention. And even after watching the trailer, I realized that Luc Besson missed with the choice of actors.

Dane DeHaan starring as Major Valerian. He doesn't look like a super-agent. I can't take my eyes off bags under his eyes.

He's 31, but he looks like 17. He does not look like the character that people want to orient themselves on. He tries several times to make him build romantic phrases and asks Cara to marry him. It was the worst pick-up ever. But he is a great actor against the background the acting of Cara Delevingne.

Cara Delevingne shouldn't act. She's good in modeling, but...She has only three emotion: wobbling, rolling her eyes and browing. Every time she patiently waits for her cue, without changing her face.

Rihanna in her cameo shows more acting abilities than these two.

Luc Besson is very satisfied with the film and the actors. He considers them to be the best. He said about Cara Delevingne (my translation of Russian interview with Luc Besson):

Tell us a little about how you chose Cara Delevingne for this role.

There was a casting. That's all. She approached the role. I watched a lot of actresses, but only in Cara I recognize the heroine I knew from my ten years. They are very similar. Cara was not yet in the movies, I could not see her early roles, because they did not exist in principle. Therefore, I tormented her with tests. There was something powerful in her, the power of resistance - she hit me.

VISUAL PART

Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets is a very beautiful movie with a record amount of computer graphics. Luc Besson thought to attract the viewer a fantastic world with a thousand monsters. On the one hand he did it. On the other hand, he forgot about such an important component - as an interesting plot and excellent actors. The time has passed when the audience was conducted on a bright picture and action, now everyone wants also a deep plot.

Luke Besson wanted to beat the sensational Avatar and his The Fifth Element, but he did not succeed. The Fifth Element is a classic, Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets will be forgotten in a couple of months.
