What happens when a man is so powerful that he starts to believe that he can provide solutions to everyone's problems even the problems he created? That was the question that struck my mind while watching Digger.
The movie is a dark satirical comedy starring Tom Cruise who made me watch it at the first place. The movie started with a very wealthy oil tycoon, Digger Rockwell who who caught up in the prevention of a global disaster that he contributed to. What I see about the movie Is the it is about ambition, power and what happened usually happens when someone has to face the consequences of their actions.
I got suprised when I saw Tom Cruise acting a different role from his usual super hero always saving the day that I know him for. In this movie, he was the powerful man whose powerful influence cannot automatically give a solution for the mess that was around him. Digger is this kind of character who has spent a lot of time getting his way, and watching him confront a situation beyond his control gives the story much of its appeal.
One of the interesting elements for me about Digger is the satire elements because he was so desperate to find a solution to the things happening in the world which raesid another question in my mind: can anyone really save people from a disaster when they helped contribute to that disaster or when they are even the main cause? I love how this story was directed towards the rich sets of people who always believe that the money they have, their connection and influence can repair everything. And in most cases, a particular person that is giving a solution to a problem is also the reason why every is suffering from that problem.
This movie has a lot of support cast that I have not seen before, like Riz, Sandra, John who gave the movie more life than the chaos surrounding Digger. Thier involvement gave more meaningful perspectives to the movie that wealthy man trying to save the world. However, not everyone might be able to relate with the satire that comes with the movie itself. A lot of people always expect a straightforward movie, but this took another direction.
What I found interesting to discuss about Digger is how it made its willingness to make someone who is already wealthy and influential to look rediculous instead of making him admirable. There is something calming about seeing a man who always believed with his money he can find solution and control everything and later discovering that there is a limit to what he can do. That Idea was so strong even though the way the movie was executed can feel uneven sometimes.
Digger is filled with ambitious satire carried out by Tom Cruise mostly. For anyone looking for a conventional blockbuster movie, this movie might not satisfy you, but if you are someone like who who can flow with any movie especially those filled with a lot of questions and something to think about, you will find this interesting.
