This is the first honest review I've read since Odyssey took over the internet, and I must state that you write beautifully well! Your thoughts are expressed finely without giving out detailed spoilers. This is exactly what a review looks like! I'm impressed.
Now, to my experience. I really do think Odyssey is an impressive adaptation, especially with the production and my reason is simply because rarely do movies ever beat a book. The cast were perfect, in my opinion.
However, just like you, I noticed some scenes lacked the emotional weight that was needed. Odysseus himself peaked for me when he disguisd as a beggar and everything from there took an upward hill for his character.I was not too impressed with Holland either.
And as for the notion that the gods were toned down, I hope we remember that we don't quite see them as in the story. They come exactly as gods and were expressed definitely as storms, thunder, and visions of Athena. So, It's a non-issue for me.
And frankly, the gods remain guilt and I think this representation was perfect to recontextualize the entire film. For the rushed scenes, leaving more gaps for depth, I totally agree on that. Although some argue that the idea behind most scenes were already widely known.
It's a solid 9 for me anyway. Still open to reading the actual book and learning more about the greek mythology.🥰
Wow, I have to go see it. I've seen so many versions. I'd love to see this one and finally see a Christopher Nolan film.
I'm not a fan of this kind of story; I remember watching part of Troy, but not the whole thing. However, I'd actually like to see this movie because of the lead actors. Zendaya and Pattison never really won me over as actors—I don't know, they seem really apathetic in their roles, hehe—but anyway, maybe I'll watch it later. Cheers.
I was following the trailer of this movie... And maybe I'll watch this on this weekend or on next weekend but ASAP 🙂
!PIZZA
I haven't seen this movie yet and I don't think I can go see her either because I'm poor. 🥴
However, I am a huge fan of Christopher Nolan, to the point that I even did a special post recently on my blog talking about all his films. So I don't intend to overlook this potential masterpiece, even if it is a semi-realistic and Americanized film adaptation of a Greek and ancient work like the Homer's Odyssey.
There's always that eternal debate of whether to want an adaptation that's 100% faithful to the original work or an adaptation that conveys a story that possesses the essence of the original work. The second is more common, since the first is almost never appreciated, especially in the world of Hollywood.
I honestly think that The Odyssey, if it is as dense and long as you mention, would have been better if they had made a series instead of a nearly 3-hour movie. Although, who knows, depending on the success of this film, we might see something like this in the future, who knows. 👀
Tbh, I love watching movies related to Greek mythology, I was hoping the gods and mythical creatures would play a bigger role. It's a bit disappointing to hear they were toned down but your review was very insightful. I think it well described and I will probably try watching it. Added to my list ✅
That will be another movie I'd like to watch soon. Great review. Greetings!
Great review of this movie that has caused a lot of controversy. It looks like it could have been a great epic of Homeric proportions, but it almost seems that the weight of the burden was too much. Understandably, people will look for accuracy in some details (even if the story is fiction), and this is perhaps the movies weakest points. Great to see that you provided a balanced review.
I tried to read your post carefully to not catch some spoilers before watching the movie, but on the other hand, the Odyssey story is 3000 years old, and it was an obligatory topic for at least 2 classes in my secondary school... So, no spoilers... 😀
I think the world premiere is today, and in the past week, whenever I would open YouTube, I would see tons of interviews and promotional videos for the movie... I am a big Christopher Nolan fan, but this is out of control... Anyway, thanks for the review, and despite all good and bad things, I will watch the movie very soon... 😃
