The Professor & the Madman: a movie review

Review by @yahia-lababidi · 1768d · of The Professor and the Madman

So, I was delighted to discover that there was a film adaptation to this love letter to language, the evolution of meaning, devotion, obsession, redemption and much else.

Here's a memorable quotation from the movie, by the character of Sean Penn, who deserves an Oscar for his complex and moving portrayal of the troubled madman:

I can fly out of this place on the backs of books. I’ve gone to the end of the world on the wings of words.

When I read, no one is after me. When I read, I am the one who is chasing, chasing after God. Please I beg you… join the chase.

Admittedly, the film is something of a departure from the book and, as can be expected, takes some poetic license with the plot. But, it remains an incredibly moving story (that might move the soft of heart to tears).

Here's a peek at the film trailer to give you an idea of the gripping story and powerful performances on display:

*** As a bookworm, of course, I want you to read the book but, if you're reluctant, perhaps this fine film might persuade you to do so.

The movie really brings out the friendship between these two extraordinary leads, given life by Mel Gibson and Sean Penn, while exploring the fine line between madness and genius.

Further, for the romantics out there, it is cast as a great love story — riveting stuff!
