This is The Shadow and Bone series created by Eric Heisserer, whose inspiration derived from the novel of the same name, written by Leigh Bardugo, released in April 2021. Starring Jessie Li Mei, Ben Barnes, Archie Renaux, Freddy Carter, Aminta Suman and Kit Young.
What is the series about?
A shadow separates two great kingdoms. Many have wanted to cross it, but to do so is an act of suicide. Within it dwell monstrous beings that kill anyone who tries to pass.
However, the attempts have never stopped and, to try to cross it once again, they order the Army to assemble a team to do so. During the recruitment of the soldiers, Mal is called to integrate it and Alina goes into crisis, because she fears for her friend's life.
She, in desperation, devises a plan to get herself included and succeeds, though she didn't count on a couple of things going wrong. As they entered the Shadow, their faces reflected the terror of the moment.
They all feared the worst, until their fears were realized. They were brutally attacked and just as Mal was attacked by the terrors creatures, something impossible happens. A fact that was believed to be a myth. From that moment on, everyone's life changes forever.
What comes next? I can't tell you. So if you are a bit interested, you can watch it and enjoy it with your family or alone.
What do we get in this series? First of all, two orphaned friends who do their best to escape from a war and stay together. These are Alina Starkov and her best friend Maylen Oratsev.
Both are rejected because of their ancestry, so they always have a constant struggle to stay afloat within a hostile world. The truth of the matter is that they grow up and Mal, so she calls him, becomes an Army tracker and she becomes a Cartographer.
On the other hand, the great threat: The Shadow. This one keeps two nations divided. No one has been able to pass through it and through which no one has been able to pass or destroy despite countless attempts.
A villain known as General Kirigan, who in turn is the General of the Second Army. This gentleman is charming, enigmatic, but who has a big secret. He is a key player in this series.
Also a trio known as the Crows. They are a very particular group that seeks to appropriate a reward and together they get into various problems to achieve it. Inej, Jesper and Kaz have a great sense of belonging and are loyal to each other and each, in their own way, brings a talent to the group and so they are quite interesting.
And, if that wasn't enough, we are also treated to a universe of people with supernatural powers, called grishas (Infernis, gales, makers, mortifiers, confectioners, healers), monstrous creatures, big secrets, intrigues, fights, revelations.
All of the above are joined by a beautiful setting and costumes that give it an interesting visual impact. I'm not an expert in visual effects, but I think it offers a good show in that sense.
As far as the performance of the actors is concerned, I consider it to be quite acceptable. Perhaps, there is some expert reader who has another opinion, but, at the end of the day, I confess that I enjoyed this series a lot. It is only one season old and I hope that the second season does not ruin what was done in the first part.
Undoubtedly, this is a series that can make you spend a good afternoon. You may find some clichés, but if you are a fan like me of this kind of stories and manage not to focus only on them, you will surely enjoy it as much as I did.

¿De qué trata la serie?
Una sombra separa dos grandes reinos. Muchos han querido atravesarla, pero hacerlo es un acto suicida. Dentro de ellas habitan seres monstruosos que matan a todo aquel que intenta pasar.
Sin embargo, los intentos nunca han parado y, para intentar cruzarla una vez más, ordenan al Ejército armar un equipo para hacerlo. Durante el reclutamiento de los soldados, Mal es llamado para integrarlo y Alina entra en crisis, porque teme por la vida de su amigo.
Ella, desesperada, idea un plan para hacer que la incluyan y lo logra, aunque no contaba con un par de cosas que salieron mal. Mientras entraban en la Sombra, sus caras reflejaban el terror del momento.
Todos temían lo peor, hasta que sus miedos se hicieron realidad. Fueron atacados brutalmente y justo cuando Mal fue atacado por las terroríficas criaturas, sucede algo imposible. Un hecho del que se creía que era un mito. Desde ese momento, la vida de todos cambia para siempre.
¿Qué sigue después? No puedo contártelo. Así que si te interesó un poco, pues puedes verla y disfrutarla en familia o sólo.
¿Qué nos regala en esta serie? En primer lugar, dos amigos huérfanos que hacen todo lo posible por escapar de una guerra y mantenerse unidos. Estos son Alina Starkov y a su mejor amigo Maylen Oratsev.
Ambos son rechazados por su ascendencia, por lo que siempre tienen una lucha constante por mantenerse a flote dentro de un mundo hostil. Lo cierto del caso es que ellos crecen y Mal, así lo llama ella, se convierte en rastreador del Ejército y ella en Cartógrafa.
Por otro lado, la gran amenaza: La Sombra. Esta mantiene dividida a dos naciones. Nadie ha podido atravesarla y por la que nadie ha podido pasar ni destruir pese a los incontables intentos que se han hecho.
Un villano conocido como el General Kirigan, quien a su vez es el General del Segundo Ejército. Este caballero es encantador, enigmático, pero que tiene un gran secreto. Es una pieza calve dentro de esta serie.
También un trío conocido como los Cuervos. Son un grupo bien particular que busca apropiarse de una recompensa y juntos se meten en varios problemas para alcanzarlo. Inej, Jesper y Kaz tienen un gran sentido de pertenencia y son leales entre sí y cada uno, a su manera, aporta un talento al grupo y por eso son bastante interesantes.
Y, por si fuera poco, también nos regala un universo de personas con poderes sobrenaturales, llamados grishas (Infernis, vendavales, hacedores, mortificadores, confeccionadores, sanadores), criaturas monstruosas, grandes secretos, intrigas, peleas, revelaciones.
A todo lo anterior, se unen a una hermosa ambientación y vestuario que le aporta un impacto visual interesante. No soy experta en temas de efectos visuales, pero considero que ofrece una buen espectáculo en ese sentido.
En lo que se refiere a la interpretación de los actores, considero que es bastante aceptable. Tal vez, haya algún lector experto que tenga otra opinión, pero, al final del día, confieso que disfruté mucho esta serie. Apenas tiene una temporada y espero que la segunda no eche por tierra lo que se hizo en esta primera parte.
Sin lugar a dudas, esta es una serie que puede hacerte pasar una buena tarde. De pronto encontrarás algunos clichés, pero si eres fanático como yo de este tipo historias y logras no centrarte sólo en ellos, de seguro la disfrutarás tanto como yo.
