Call in Spanish From the Garden is a film based on the book "Being There" written in 1971 by the Polish writer Jerzy Kosinsky.
A short, simple and funny novel in which the author attacks the modern world through his protagonist character.
Being there alludes to the sometimes fortuitous fact that people encounter being the right place at the right time.
That’s what happens to the character in this story, called Chance Gardiner. A name with a pun. Chance, by chance, oportinity and Gardiner as a variant of gardener.
And this character had as a profession gardening.
The film, released in 1979, was called Being There,and was directed on the big screen by Hal Ashby and starring Peter Sellers and Shirley Mac Laine, who were nominated for the Oscar for their masterful performances in this film.
The story tells how a retired gardener of an old and dilapidated mansion is, after the death of its owner, isolated from the world and his only contact with the outside ends up being television.
It so happens that Chance Gardiner, seeing himself alone and without the only person who connected him to the human race, his now deceased patron, was forced to do something that he had never done: go out to the streets to seek sustenance. So on his first outing, confused and aimless, he is lightly run over by the car of a distinguished and elegant lady, wife of a prominent politician who, realizing what happened and noticing the disorientation of the character, that she thought it was a product of impact, she chooses to take him home and attend to him in the best way possible by trying to keep the fact of the run-over from becoming a public event that would affect the reputation of her prestigious husband.
It is worth remembering that at that time television represented in technological terms what social networks and the internet as such now represent, that is, they were the means most at hand to completely alienate themselves. And that was precisely what the author wanted to expose with his work.

I realize that the present human being and society as such, without wanting or wanting it, is turned into a kind of Chance Gardiner.

Una novela corta, sencilla y divertida en la que el autor arremete contra el mundo moderno a través de su personaje protagónico.
Being there significa "estar allí" y hace alusión al a veces fortuito hecho con el que se topan las personas de estar el el lugar correcto en el momento indicado.
Eso es lo que le pasa al personaje de esta historia, llamado Chance Gardiner. Un nombre con un juego de palabras. Chance, por oportunidad y Gardiner como una variante de gardener, que significa jardinero.
Y es que este personaje tenía como oficio la jardinería.
La película, estrenada es 1979 fue llamada Being There, igual que el libro y fue nombrada en español Desde el jardín y fue dirigida en la gran pantalla por Hal Ashby y protagonizada por Peter Sellers y Shirley Mac Laine, quienes fueron nominados al Oscar por sus magistrales actuaciones en esta película.
La historia cuenta como un retraído jardinero de una vetusta y desvencijada mansión, queda, tras la muerte de su dueño, aislado del mundo y su único contacto con el exterior termina siendo la televisión.
Sucede que Chance Gardiner, al verse sólo y sin la única persona que lo conectaba con la raza humana, su ya fallecido patrón, se vio obligado a hacer algo que jamás había hecho: Salir a la calle a buscar el sustento. Es así como en su primera salida, confundido y sin rumbo, es arrollado levemente por el auto de una distinguida y elegante dama, esposa de un prominente político la cual al darse cuenta de lo ocurrido y notando la desorientación del personaje, que ella pensaba que era producto del impacto, opta por llevarlo a su casa y atenderlo de la mejor manera posible intentando que el hecho del arrollamiento no pasara a convertirse en un evento público que afectara la reputación de su prestigioso marido.
Vale la pena recordar que para aquel entonces la televisión representaba en términos tecnológicos lo que ahora representan las redes sociales y el internet como tal, es decir, eran el medio mas a la mano para enajenarse por completo. Y fue eso precisamente lo que quiso exponer el autor con su obra.
Cualquier parecido con la realidad actual, es pura coincidencia?
Me doy cuenta que el ser humano actual y la sociedad como tal ,sin querer o queriéndolo, está convertida en una especie de Chance Gardiner.
El internet, las redes y al aislamiento han llevado al ser humano a quedarse en sus casas, sólo conectados al mundo exterior por una pantalla que le muestra y le dice lo que está sucediendo afuera, visiones que tal vez, o muchas veces, están lejos de la realidad.
Es premonitoria la obra que dio pie a la película?
Gardiner, un hombre que no sabía ni leer ni escribir y cuyo único conocimiento.era la jardinería, llega a ser postulado como candidato presidencial de los EEUU a la muerte del anciano político, esposo de la mujer que lo arrolló.
Una película que plantea una paradoja que cada quién puede interpretar a su manera.
Quienes no hayan visto la película podrán hacerlo para despejar así la curiosidad de cómo la modernidad plantea retos ahora igual que hace 40 años.
