The Birds of Alfred Hitchcock
The first movie I remember seeing of Alfred hitchcock was The Birds.
Actually, I was very young when I saw it on TV, but I was very impressed by the scenes where birds attack people.
As an adult, I wanted to see that movie again to understand what it was about. Actually, it wasn’t easy to understand.

This film was released in 1963 and is very surreal, not only for the narrative of the story but for the images, which are of a very complex compositional style.
It is also apocalyptic, because the fact that birds attack humans can be interpreted as the arrival of the end of the world.
But this film has been interpreted in many ways however one of the most interesting is the psychoanalytic interpretation what has become of it
The plot
This film presents the development of the stay of a rich and arrogant city girl on her arrival in a small town and how she falls in love with a handsome local man.
This is an almost obsessive crush, and that is why this girl pursues and pretends to the man in different ways, and even wants to conquer the affection and approval of the mother to reach her heart.
In the midst of his attempts, he stumbles upon an old girlfriend of this man. And in the course of the plot we understand that it is the mother who takes all the women away from their child, because she fears losing it when he falls in love with another woman.
This is how this film proposes the development of an edipic-style love of this possessive mother with her son, which takes her away from any woman even when that represents her son’s unhappiness.
At this point we should stop for a moment, and think if this is a drama of the time or if it is a universal and timeless theme.
And we wonder, what does the attack of birds on humans have to do with this plot of obsessive maternal love? There’s what makes this movie special.
If we look closely at this film (and I had to watch it several times to realize this) we will appreciate that birds only attack humans when the two women confront each other for the love of the man.

The Birds is a film that, without a doubt, goes beyond suspense and terror, with its psychological content it gives us the possibility to reflect on the most intimate instincts of human nature and how they could take humanity to the end of its days.

It is said that this film is based on the actual fact of a bird attack on the Bay of Monterrey in those days, but although this information circulates on the internet it is nothing more than speculation.
What is known is that Hitchcock bought the rights to one of his stories from Daphne Du Maurier and based the film on it, and as far as is known, the only thing the director of the original story kept, is the fact of the attack of birds on humans and the recreation of some specific passages, but I do not retain the original plot.
Something extremely striking about this film is the absence of music. There are only the special effects that accompany the sound of birds and their attacks.
According to what can be read on the Internet, the same composer of the soundtrack of hitchcock films was the one who suggested not to put music on it so as not to distract the tension and the director knew how to accept this important suggestion.
In 2019, Netflix premiered the film The Silence, which although it does not have a similar plot, proposes the attack of birds on humans and to which criticism inevitably relates to the famous film Hitchcock.
With or without sagas, imitators or reminders, without a doubt the film Alfred Hitchcock, The Birds, set an important standard in the genre for its avant-garde style for the moment it was released.
It is considered the last masterpiece of the famous director, even though after it he made at least half a dozen more films, but which do not stand out as this incomparable piece.

Los pájaros de Alfred Hitchcock
La primera película que recuerdo haber visto de Alfred hitchcock fue Los Pájaros.
La verdad, yo era muy pequeña cuando la vi en televisión, pero me impactaron mucho las escenas donde las aves atacan a las personas.
Siendo adulto, quise volver a ver esa película para entender de qué se trataba. La verdad, no fue fácil comprenderla.

Esta película fue echa en el año 1963 y es muy subrealista, no solo por la narrativa de la historia sino por las imágenes, que son de un estilo compositivo muy complejo.
Protagonizada por Tippi Hedren como Melanie Daniels (la intrusa), Rod Taylor como Mitch Brenner (el codiciado soltero) y Jessica Tandy como Lydia Brenner (la obsesiva madre)
También es de estilo apocalíptico, porque el hecho de que las aves ataquen al ser humano, se puede interpretar como la llegada del fin del mundo.
Pero esta película se ha interpretado de muchas maneras sin embargo una de las más interesantes es la interpretación psicoanalítica qué se ha hecho de ella
La trama
Esta película presenta el desarrollo de la estadía de una rica y arrogante chica de ciudad (Melanie) a su llegada a un pueblo pequeño y cómo se enamora de un apuesto hombre de la localidad (Mitch).
Este es un enamoramiento casi obsesivo, y es por ello que esta chica persigue y pretende al hombre de diferentes maneras, e incluso quiere conquistar el cariño y aprobación de la madre (Lydia) para llegar a su corazón.
En medio de sus intentos, se topa con una antigua novia de este hombre. Y en el transcurrir de la trama vamos comprendiendo que es la madre quién aleja todas las mujeres de su hijo, porque teme perderlo cuando éste se enamore de otra mujer.
Es así como esta película plantea el desarrollo de un amor de estilo edipico de esta madre posesiva con su hijo, que la lleva a alejarlo de cualquier mujer aún cuando eso represente la infelicidad de su hijo.
En este punto deberíamos detenernos por un momento, y pensar sí este es un drama propio de la época o si es un tema universal y atemporal.
Y nos preguntamos, qué tiene que ver el ataque de las aves hacia los humanos con esta trama de obsesivo amor materno? Allí está lo que hace especial a esta película.
Sí miramos con detenimiento esta película (y yo tuve que verla varias veces para darme cuenta de esto) apreciaremos que las aves solo atacan a los humanos cuando las dos mujeres se enfrentan por el amor del hombre.

Los Pájaros es una película que, sin lugar a dudas, va más allá del suspenso y el terror, con su contenido psicológico nos da la posibilidad de reflexionar sobre los instintos más íntimos de la naturaleza humana y como ellos podrían llevar a la humanidad al final de sus días.

Se dice que esta película está basada en el hecho real de un ataque de aves sobre la Bahía de Monterrey en aquellos días, pero aunque esta información circula por internet no es más que una especulación.
Lo que sí se sabe es que Hitchcock compró los derechos de una de sus historias a Daphne Du Maurier y sobre esta basó la película, y por lo que se sabe, lo único que mantuvo el director de la historia original, es el hecho del ataque de aves hacia los humanos y la recreación de algunos pasajes específicos, más no conservo la trama original.
Algo sumamente llamativo en esta película es la ausencia de música. Solo están los efectos especiales qué acompañan el sonido de las aves y sus ataques.
Según lo que se puede leer en internet, el mismo compositor habitual de los soundtrack de las películas de hitchcock, fue quién le sugirió no colocarle música para no distraer la tensión y el director supo aceptar esta importante sugerencia.
En 2019, Netflix estrenó la película El Silencio, que aunque no tiene una trama similar, propone el ataque de las aves a los humanos y a la cual la crítica inevitablemente relaciona con la famosa película de Hitchcock.
Con o sin sagas, imitadores o remembranzas, sin dudas, la película Los Pájaros de Alfred Hitchcock, marco una importante pauta en el género por su estilo vanguardista para el momento en que se estrenó.
Es considerada la última obra maestra del afamado director, aún cuando después de ella hizo al menos media docena más de películas, pero a las cuales no se les destaca como a esta inigualable pieza.
