The work that divided waters in Cuban cinema is based on a short story by Senel Paz. This film fearlessly touches upon one of the most thorny topics of post-revolutionary Cuba. Which was nothing more than the evident contradiction between a process that sold itself as "with all and for the good of all," but which systematically excluded the LGBTQI+ community. By failing to understand them as part of its worldview of the people.
Thus, in this film, we encounter David, a young communist militant, who after a chance meeting at Havana's most famous ice cream parlor, called Coppelia.
With whom he categorizes at first glance as a homosexual, a story that is at the very least human begins to be woven.
Because despite the evident difference between these characters—whether cultural, ideological, or in their ages—they manage to understand each other.
Little by little, placing the greatest weight on the points that unite them rather than those that divide them.
Thus, a first conversation that started out tense and perhaps with bait—as David was tempted by books that were almost impossible to get in Cuba at that time—begins to weave his relationship with Diego.
One that at first seems ambiguous, entirely by intention, with Diego boasting of his house, his great culture, the possessions he has, but at the same time feeling attracted both physically and a little touched by the innocence of David.
Who, due to his youth, despite his militancy, knows almost nothing of the world surrounding him. And as we will see later, lives in a shelter alongside his companions, perhaps more radical than he is.
Here, apart from this relationship, we see a certain kind of decay that Havana is experiencing, perhaps unintentionally, but it was the atmosphere surrounding this whole story.
Which thus collides almost inevitably with David's aspirations of becoming a writer, one without any training, and whom Diego would help little by little to form, while this desire he felt for him was dissolving, turning into an unusual friendship for those times.
One where homosexuality was practically considered treason against the revolutionary project. Thus, amidst debates and ideological clashes, they manage to reach points of understanding.
Diego, from his role as an art critic and curator, tries to push forward an exhibition by a friend of his, but there is an important roadblock.
What the embassies and governments of both countries believe, because yes, the exhibition tries to be taken outside of Cuba, it tries to be taken to Mexico, and one might wonder what governments have to do with an exhibition.
But every work is loaded with symbolism, and these symbolisms in turn carry a political weight.
The film makes this evident with the meddling and the strong censorship that art had in Cuba during those times. Something that in itself makes the film a milestone.
Because it dares to question all these aspects from art itself. Which was already heavily monitored.
Little by little, the bond between these two characters begins to be questioned by both sides.
On the one hand, the artist who mentored Diego begins to feel a kind of jealousy, the culmination of which is a scene where, after a fit of rage, he destroys his own work upon failing to understand Diego's motivations and a bit of his shift in ideology under the influence of this boy.
The same reasons that lead David's comrades to suspect him in many senses. And this suspicion leads to a denunciation of Diego's actions, something that reverberates in the lives of both.
As this culminates in Diego's almost forced exit from the country. Not without facing each other one last time.
And rather than a confrontation or a painful farewell, having a duel of truths, telling each other what they always thought of one another and how their friendship helped them both grow.
In such a way that both put their prejudices aside a bit by being able to understand the other person as an equal despite the things that separated them, this being a play on the film's title: Strawberry and Chocolate. The two most common flavors in Cuban ice cream parlors and at the same time the ones that most divided people, placing you on one side or the other.
A film, to say the least, highly awarded, which divided both the criticisms and the opinions of the Cuban people. But which over time became an undisputed classic. A cult film that is revisited over and over again, since long before it was a topic entirely open to debate, discussed in Cuba and largely in Latin America.
This film dared to make a scathing critique. And advocate for that, for the unity of a people who were feeling very rapid, very convulsive changes, but who despite all this continue to be a single people.

Que no era más que la evidente contradicción entre un proceso que se vendía a sí mismo como "con todos y por el bien de todos", pero que excluía de forma sistemática a la comunidad LGTBIQ+. Al no entenderlos como parte de su cosmovisión de pueblo.
Así, en esta película nos encontramos con David, un joven militante comunista, quien tras encontrarse de manera fortuita en la heladería más famosa de La Habana, llamada Coppelia.
Con quien él catalogará desde primer vistazo como un homosexual, comienza a tejerse una historia cuanto menos humana.
Porque a pesar de la evidente diferencia que hay entre estos personajes, tanto cultural, ideológica o de sus edades logran entenderse. Poco a poco poniendo el mayor peso en los puntos que los unen y no en los que los dividen.
Así, una primera conversación que empezó tensa y tal vez con un cebo al David verse tentado por unos libros casi imposibles de conseguir en Cuba para ese tiempo, comienza a tejerse su relación con Diego.
Una que en un principio se nos pende ambigua, totalmente de manera intencional, con Diego presumiendo su casa, su gran cultura, los bienes que tiene, pero a la misma vez sintiéndose atraído tanto físicamente y un poco enternecido por la inocencia de David. Quien por su juventud, a pesar de su militancia, casi no conoce nada del mundo que lo rodea. Y como veremos más adelante, vive en un albergue junto a sus compañeros quizás más radicales que él.
Aquí, a parte de esta relación, vemos esta cierta especie de decadencia que vive La Habana, quizás de manera no intencional, pero era el ambiente que circunda toda esta historia.
Que así colisiona de forma casi inevitable con las aspiraciones de David de ser escritor, uno sin ninguna formación, y que Diego ayudara poco a poco a formar, mientras que este deseo que sentía por él se iba disolviendo, volviéndose una amistad insólita para esos tiempos.
Uno donde la homosexualidad prácticamente era considerada traición hacia el proyecto revolucionario. Así, entre debates y choques ideológicos logran llegar a puntos de entendimiento.
Diego, desde su papel de crítico de arte y curador, intenta llevar una exposición de un amigo suyo adelante, pero hay una traba importante.
Lo que creen las embajadas y los gobiernos de ambos países, porque sí, la exposición intenta llevarla fuera de Cuba, intenta llevarla a México, y se podría preguntar qué tienen que ver los gobiernos en una exposición.
Pero toda obra está cargada de simbolismo, y estos simbolismos a su vez tienen una carga política.
La película lo hace ver con la inmiscusión y la censura tan fuerte que para esos tiempos tenía el arte en Cuba. Cosa que por sí misma hace a la película un hito.
Porque se atreve a cuestionar todos estos aspectos desde el propio arte. Que ya de por sí era muy vigilado.
Poco a poco, el vínculo entre estos dos personajes comienza a ser cuestionado de ambas partes.
Por un lado, el artista que tutelaba a Diego comienza a tener una especie de celos, siendo el punto culminante de estos una escena donde, tras un ataque de rabia, destruye su propia obra al no poder comprender las motivaciones de Diego y un poco su cambio de ideología ante la influencia de este muchacho.
Mismas razones que llevan a los compañeros de David a sospechar de él en muchos sentidos. Y esta sospecha se da una denuncia hacia las acciones de Diego, cosa que repercute en la vida de ambos.
Al desembocar esto en la salida casi forzosa del país de Diego. No sin antes verse las caras por última vez.
Y más que una confrontación o una despedida dolorosa, tener un duelo de verdades, decirse lo que siempre pensaron el uno del otro y cómo su amistad los ayudó a crecer a ambos. De manera tal que los dos dejaron un poco a un lado sus prejuicios al poder comprender a la otra persona como un igual a pesar de las cosas que los separaban, siendo esto un juego con el título de la película: Fresa y chocolate.
Los dos sabores más comunes en las heladerías cubanas y a su vez los que más dividían a la gente que te ponían de un bando o de otro. Una película, por más decirlo, muy premiada, que dividió tanto las críticas como las opiniones del pueblo cubano. Pero que con el tiempo se volvió un clásico indiscutible. Uno de culto que es revisitado una y otra vez, ya que mucho tiempo antes de que fuese un tema totalmente abierto a debate, discutido en Cuba y en gran parte América Latina.
Esta película se atrevió a hacer una crítica mordaz. Y abogar por eso, por la unidad de un pueblo que estaba sintiendo unos cambios muy rápidos, muy convulsos, pero que a pesar de todo esto sigue siendo un único pueblo.
