A world where machines have already won. This is how The Matrix begins, one of the most revolutionary stories that left the biggest mark on 21st-century science fiction. In it, we follow the story of Neo, a young programmer who, after interacting in a way he doesn't understand, finds his reality starting to be pursued. This pursuit ends with the encounter of his mentor, Morpheus, who offers him two choices: one is to stay in this world, which is nothing more than an illusion, and with this reboot back to the stability that seems to be winning; and the other is to wake up and face a reality he doesn't know, but which truly represents his freedom. Neo chooses this: to wake up and go to reality, and with it, he finds a post-apocalyptic world, destroyed by a war between machines and humanity. A world where there is no sun, a vague attempt by humanity to prevent machines from being able to feed, but what in turn caused their extinction? Since machines need to use this very same humanity as a food source.
Thus creating a symbiotic relationship where machines cannot live without humanity, but humanity in turn finds itself secluded by these machines that keep it alive and in a sort of illusion in this world where the majority live, which is a dream that repeats in a loop over and over again in the year 1999, right before the turn of the century.
Thus we discover humanity's last refuge, one where those who have chosen to wake up live and try to fight against the machines, rather than being massacred by them, because the machines seem to have total dominion over the world. It is a lost war, but one that still tries to fight both outside and inside the matrix, the matrix being this illusory world created by the machines and a world that Neo has the ability to modify, thus turning him into the One, the person humanity has been waiting for a long time so that, by changing the rules of the matrix, he manages to give humanity a chance to survive.
Thus, our protagonist finds himself wrapped up in rigorous training to achieve both modifying the matrix to his will, and fighting against these programs that guard it, which are nothing more than the machines in their non-corporeal representation. Everything in this world, inside the matrix, is mediated by programs, programs that seem to have their own personality, and with this we see perhaps the most iconic program within this world, which is Agent Smith, who dedicates himself to pursuing Neo and serves as the obstacle for him to reach his objectives.
Without entering into major spoilers, this work is crucial for science fiction for how it explores themes like reality, humanism, even the pertinence of what is real and what is not, and how much this perception of reality affects our own reality.
Because philosophically this film carries a lot of weight, it makes us question the why of certain issues, even on a political level, because if those who control us keep us in this sort of illusion to keep themselves alive, to live off the energies that we give them, Matrix dares to step into alleys that classical science fiction flirted with, but never in such a frontal way, just like the issues that pit the machine against the human, this time posing a symbiotic relationship, a relationship that apparently both need and perhaps this movie doesn't fully explore, but that we can see throughout the trilogy.
Here we can also see how humanity is not entirely united, even while living under these conditions. How there are people who, knowing the secret of the matrix and living within it, choose to stay in this dream, and the greatest betrayals done to humanity are in this sense: people who choose a super-comfortable illusion rather than face this reality, which is nothing more than a world that has already lost, a world that has already been destroyed, and perhaps is a terrifying reflection of the reality toward which we might be heading.
That its protagonist is a programmer is not by chance; he is one of these people who today has the control to decide how much to modify our reality, until when his morality is a yardstick to decide what is right to do with these technologies that are already upon us, that are no longer science fiction, that are already a reality, and what ethically is not moral, what ethically we should not do.
Thus Neo, choosing these pills and leaving us in reality or in the matrix, is a fairly faithful representation of what we should or should not be doing as a society right now. And even so, with all these nuances, it is not even a step on the theoretical philosophical depth that this movie has, which also has incredible action and visual effects that marked cinema since its creation, taking it to levels not seen up to that point, having iconic scenes that continue to be recreated by all kinds of cinema, mainly by action and martial arts cinema, because kung-fu—this martial arts style combining firearms and martial arts—is present throughout the film and marks a before and after within cinema, placing its directors, the Wachowski sisters, and its protagonist Keanu Reeves as icons of modern cinema and mainly action cinema, catapulting their careers from then on in a truly unusual way for cinema of these characteristics.
Matrix thus being an unavoidable recommendation, not for those who enjoy science fiction or action cinema in general, but for those who appreciate cinema as a complex art and one that, from the past, can even speak to us about the problems of today and always.
