: One of the foundational films of contemporary horror, that is how big The Witch feels. An A24 film where we follow the story of a small family of North American settlers who are expelled from their community due to the father's radical vision regarding matters of morality and religiosity, so much so that they even exceed the norms of the era, which was already strict.
Here we will follow their exile in the forest with his wife, his eldest daughter (who will be our protagonist), and his other three children, consisting of an older boy and twins, one of each sex, and of course, also the youngest of all, a baby who will be more than just a character—a crucial turning point in the movie.
Because, as was customary and given the intention of trying to survive in hostile conditions, the eldest daughter was almost always in charge of looking after the younger children. Thus, our protagonist embarks on this task when something unexpected happens. From one moment to the next, the family baby disappears almost right before her eyes, thus sounding the alarms for the entire family.
Alarms that let them know they were not alone, or at least that in that forest there was something more, something more that we and they would know as "the witch," who could represent something like the ferocity of the very nature surrounding them, awakening in this eldest daughter of the family a sense that, given the oppression of her environment, her parents, and even her own siblings, from this point on a series of events unfolds that we can catalog as increasingly unusual until they border on the supernatural.
Like when the second oldest son of the family gets lost in the forest, and we don't quite understand whether they are hallucinations or if he actually stumbles upon a cabin inhabited by a woman who is at times beautiful, at times monstrous, whom we understand as this corporeal representation of the witch.
After an incessant search, the boy returns home, but this return home seems to be marked by misfortune—one that the family tries to survive without much success, followed by the misfortunes of the twins.
Twins who from the beginning of the movie seem sinister in some sense, with a secret internal language that close siblings often have and that they seem to share through a childish game with the family's goat, a black goat that is also another symbol commonly associated with evil and that in this case will mark the breaking point, one that forms a powerful alliance with the father of the family himself, causing him to explode in fury against his own children upon failing to discern which of them is truly lending a hand to the forces of evil, although all suspicions point to the eldest daughter, not only because of the loss of the baby, but because in these purely patriarchal societies the role of women is always associated with this kind of evil.
The film is also a canvas that fairly and faithfully reflects the role and condition of women in those times, who shifted from being housewives and the backbone of the family to becoming absolute villains, guided mostly by the superstitions and prejudices of the era.
Little by little, we see how our protagonist begins to lose her mind, how these community suspicions begin to influence her, and we do not quite understand whether it is her mind betraying her or the environment that is truly beginning to reveal itself in a kind of macabre dance—one where the climax, with her surrounded by death on all sides and in the most varied ways that could have happened to each of her family members, begins to talk with the goat, which, rather than a threat, professes the simplest, most particular temptations, such as the taste of butter—temptations that might seem tiny to us, but in the society of that time were great luxuries that only a few could afford.
Thus, we see in the final scene of the film how our protagonist joins the coven, now flying without a doubt among the witches, finally joining this evil that had been calling her since the beginning of the movie and which she had been resisting.
This film, like every great work, has multiple readings; it speaks to us about religious extremism, the loss of what was considered the traditional family in the face of individualities and personal desires for freedom.
It speaks to us about suspicion and its power over the fragility of the human mind, and above all, those dark desires that exist deep within all of us and only manifest in moments of extreme tension. A film that mostly takes place in broad daylight, being one of those works that can shift terror into environments that might seem paradisiacal or reassuring to some, thus marking a twist that this studio had already been exploring, but with The Witch it reaches one of its highest points.
