How powerful can positive reinforcement be in our lives? There is a known effect called the Pygmalion effect, which goes something like this: when someone believes in us, whether positively or negatively, that opinion they have about us is reinforced.
Unconsciously, through their actions, if someone believes you are inherently bad, those people's way of treating you will slowly drive you toward that zone that he considers wickedness. Like when a teacher is told beforehand that a student is very problematic and the teacher from the very first instance treats them as such, or on the contrary, when they are told that they are very brilliant.
And this makes them pay more attention to said student. That precisely is the thesis of this movie: Treasure Planet, which transforms the classic story into a space odyssey full of ships that fly through space, action, explosions, betrayals, but above all, the story is about the awakening of his heroism, as Jim is often nicknamed.
Because yes, the movie is about his transition from childhood to adulthood, but how a positive guide who believes in the things they do is enough motivation for him to choose the right path, without this guide necessarily being the representation of that path.
In the story, we follow this young man who, after saving the life of an alien that, yes, swarming in this movie, gets caught up in a great adventure, since this alien had in his possession a sphere that, upon being decoded, contained the treasure map.
A legendary one that space pirates had been plundering across the galaxy for generations and that was the holy grail of an entire generation of space sailors.
Before blindly launching into the adventure, Jim has to lose something, and this was his home and his mother's, which pirates, upon finding out that the map and the traitor were close to where Jim lived—and this was whom Jim rescued from almost destroying his entire home in search of the treasure map, which they didn't get—but, with Jim and the map saved, he decides to embark on an adventure with the help of an old family friend who hires a ship and a whole crew to go after it.
A crew that, without the protagonist knowing it at first, was composed of the same wrongdoers who end up burning down his house. Among all of these, two very mysterious characters were the cook Silver and his pet Morph, which had the ability to transform into anything. Perhaps this being a representation of how changeable Silver himself could be, something we will see later.
While our young man embraces this adventure, he is left in the care of Silver, who instructs him in sea skills, at first with a bit of disdain, but as he goes forward and shows the great skills he has, a paternal relationship is created between Silver and Jim.
Treasure Planet. Since Silver is the first one who manages to show true confidence in Jim and his abilities, being constantly fed back by how this boy gradually overcomes the challenges placed before him.
Thus being, not a blind trust, but a trust with a solid, mutual basis, which feeds back at every step, that paternal relationship that Jim never had and that is shown from the beginning of the movie with the abandonment of his own father, is finally seen here replaced by someone in whom he can trust and who trusts in him. But the movie has a turning point right at the climax.
Where it is revealed to us that Silver, in effect, was the captain of this crew that at the time destroyed his own home. In this part of the story, the crew decides to mutiny, taking control of the ship and leaving the few who supported Jim (being the scientist who bets on the adventure, the captain, and little else) abandoned on an island. But not before Jim gets hold of the treasure map, something the crew doesn't realize at any moment thanks to Morph's shape-shifting ability, with Morph himself becoming the map.
In this remote place, they come across an abandoned robot, a robot that seemed to have defects and it was that it lacked its memory, memory that had been snatched by the very captain who guarded the treasure so that no one could find it, except him. On the island, refuge is given to our protagonists until the pirate crew threatens them again and, using his intelligence, Jim discovers that the treasure map is in turn a key that opens portals to different places in the galaxy. Thus, the pirates always managed to escape and also reach an unexplored part of the galaxy: treasure planet.
Here the climax of the movie finally happens and we see the biggest confrontation between Jim and Silver. Jim confronts Silver with the very skills that Silver taught him. And Silver in this enters into a conflict that sums up both his pride and his greed in a rather complex combination for a character of these characteristics.
Thus, after activating the self-destruction mechanism, treasure planet ends up consuming itself and it is up to Silver to choose whether to save a large part of the treasure for himself or save Jim. And in a plot twist, Silver once again abandons his fellow wrongdoers and his own greed—which was the representation of them—to save Jim, and not without fleeing.
A flight that is dizzying and where Jim once again takes charge of the situation, showing everyone how much he had grown and how much he could contribute to his own family.
The movie ends with Jim's comeback home, but he receives with this return an unknown gift of a small fraction of the treasure that is enough to rebuild his life and start a new path, this gift being the last clue we have of Silver and with it the culmination of a relationship that, although complex, helped both of them grow in a positive way.

¿Qué tan poderoso puede ser el refuerzo positivo en nuestras vidas? Hay un efecto conocido como la ley Pigmalión, que va de algo así de que cuando alguien cree en nosotros, ya sea positiva o negativamente, esa opinión que tiene sobre nosotros se refuerza.
De forma inconsciente, a través de sus acciones, si alguien cree que eres inherentemente malo, la forma de tratarte de esas personas lentamente te va a orillar hacia esa zona que él considera como maldad. Como cuando a un maestro de antemano se le dice que un estudiante es muy problemático y el maestro desde el primer instante lo trata como tal, o al contrario, cuando se le dice que es muy brillante.
Y esto hace que le presten más atención a dicho estudiante. Esa precisamente es la tesis de esta película: El planeta del tesoro, la cual transforma la historia clásica en una odisea espacial llena de barcos que vuelan a través del espacio, acción, explosiones, traiciones, pero sobre todo, la historia va sobre el despertar de su protagonismo, como lo apodan muchas veces a Jim.
Porque sí, la película trata de su paso de la niñez a la adultez, pero cómo una guía positiva que cree en las cosas que hacen es suficiente motivación para que este escoja el camino correcto, sin que necesariamente esta guía sea la representación de ese camino.
En la historia seguimos a este joven quien, tras salvar la vida de un extraterrestre que, sí, en esta película pululan, se ve envuelto en una gran aventura, ya que este tenía en su poder una esfera que, tras descodificarla, contenía el mapa del tesoro.
Uno legendario que por generaciones estuvieron saqueando por toda la galaxia piratas espaciales y que fue el santo grial de toda una generación de marinos espaciales.
Antes de lanzarse de forma ciega a la aventura, Jim tiene que perder algo, y esto fue su hogar y el de su madre, que piratas, tras enterarse de que el mapa y el traidor estaba cerca de donde Jim vivía, y este fue a quien Jim rescató de 100 acabar con todo su hogar en busca de la mapa del tesoro, cosa que no consiguen, pero, al salvarse Jim y el mapa, decide emprender una aventura con ayuda de un viejo amigo de la familia que contrata un barco y todo una tripulación para ir a por él.
Tripulación que, sin el protagonista saberlo al principio, estaba compuesta de los mismos malhechores que terminan quemando su casa. Entre todos estos dos personajes muy misteriosos eran el cocinero Silver y su mascota Morph, la cual tenía la capacidad de transformarse en cualquier cosa. Tal vez siendo esto una representación de lo cambiante que podía ser el propio Silver, cosa que veremos más adelante.
Mientras nuestro joven se abarca en esta aventura, se deja al cuidado de Silver, quien lo instruye en las habilidades del mar, al principio con un poco de den, pero mientras este va avanzando y mostrando las grandes habilidades que tienen, se crea una relación paternal entre Silver y Jim. El Planeta del Tesoro. Al ser Silver el primero que logra mostrar una confianza verdadera en Jim y sus habilidades, siendo retroalimentada constantemente por cómo este muchacho va superando poco a poco los desafíos que le pone.
Siendo así, no una confianza ciega, sino una confianza con base sólida, mutua, que se retroalimenta a cada paso, esa relación paternal que Jim nunca tuvo y que se muestra desde el principio de la película con el abandono de su propio padre, aquí se ve por fin sustituida por alguien en quien puede confiar y que confíe en él. Pero la película tiene un punto de giro justo en el momento álgido.
Donde se nos revela que Silver, en efecto, era el capitán de esta tripulación que en su momento destruyó su propio hogar. En esta parte de la historia la tripulación decide amotinarse, tomando el control del barco y dejando a los pocos que apoyaban a Jim (siendo el científico que apuesta por la aventura, la capitana y poco más) abandonados en una isla.
Pero no sin antes Jim apoderarse del mapa del tesoro, cosa que la tripulación no se da cuenta en ningún momento gracias a la habilidad de Morph de cambiar de forma y volviéndose este el mapa.
En este lugar remoto dan con un robot abandonado, un robot que parecía tener defectos y era que le faltaba su memoria, memoria que había sido arrebatada por el propio capitán que custodiaba el tesoro para que nadie lo pudiera encontrar, excepto él. En la isla se le da refugio a nuestros protagonistas hasta que otra vez la tripulación de piratas los amenaza y, usando su inteligencia, Jim descubre que el mapa del tesoro a su vez es una llave que va abriendo portales hacia distintos lugares de la galaxia. Así, los piratas lograban escapar siempre y también llegar a una parte de la galaxia inexplorada: el planeta del tesoro.
Aquí finalmente se da el clímax de la película y vemos el mayor enfrentamiento entre Jim y Silver. Jim enfrenta a Silver con las propias habilidades que este le enseñó. Y Silver en esto entra en un conflicto que suma tanto su orgullo como su codicia en una combinación bastante compleja para un personaje de estas características.
Así, tras activar el mecanismo de autodestrucción, el planeta del tesoro acaba consumiéndose a sí mismo y toca a Silver elegir si salvar gran parte del tesoro para sí mismo o salvar a Jim. Y en un giro de la trama, otra vez Silver abandona a sus compañeros malhechores y a su propia codicia que era la representación de estos para salvar a Jim y no sin antes huir.
Una huida que se da vertiginosa y donde Jim otra vez se pone al mando de la situación demostrándole a todos qué tanto había crecido y cuánto podía aportarle a su propia familia.
La película acaba con el comeback de Jim a su casa, pero recibe con esta vuelta un regalo desconocido de una pequeña fracción del tesoro que es suficiente para reconstruir su vida y empezar un camino nuevo, siendo este regalo la última pista que tenemos de Silver y con ella la culminación de una relación que, aunque compleja, les sirvió a ambos para crecer en forma positiva.
