That time when I first read Pather Panchali I was vividly imagining the era it was set around. I don't remember how old I was then. It was too early for my age to read such novels as the words used in it are a bit hard to understand but I read it anyway. The scripture used in it was almost a century old as the writer Bibhutibhushan Bandyopadhyay wrote it in 1929. I imagined it in black and white because I imagined that's how old-times would be. And then, I don't know why, after almost a decade I watched the movie adaption. And I’m thankful I waited that long. It was like a wine to me. The older the better it was. It was exactly like I imagined except all the elements in my imagination I took from details around me

The movie adaption was directed by Satyajit Ray with the same title and it was his directorial debut. Those of you who don't know about Satyajit Ray he was the best ever filmmaker in the Indian subcontinent. His contribution to films is counted just after Chaplin. He was given the Honorary Academy Awards just before his death. Yes , you read it right. He was given an Oscar despite being a Bengali filmmaker (we Bangladeshi locals have low self-esteem about our people's talent and the previous sentence is intended for them) and he was as good as a writer too.

Pather Panchali (Pronunciation- Pother Pechalie), a literal translation is “song of the road”, is a drama set just before the first world war in a rural Bengal village. The story revolves around a young boy Apu, his sister Durga and his parents. It tells a narrative about how at that time poor families lived along with there hardships. Sweets and fruits were a delicacy to them. There purpose for the whole day was to study for a short while and play for the whole day. They had no luxury but found joy in everything, even in a simple thing as eating a pickled mango.
Apu’s sister Durga was almost like a second mother to him. Though she was young she took care of his brother in every way she could. Despite living in hardships they were contempt with what they had.

The most amazing element of this film is that it has no plot twist in every turn to keep the audience engaged. No flashy effects, not even the ones that were available then , but still the only thing it will play around is your emotions. You would dare to see life from a simple eye.
This movie was the first in a trilogy. And it will be an incomplete experience for you if you don't watch all of the three at once. All of them has similar and pure dramatizations but you will feel a string of various emotions after you are done watching. If I ever put my list of ten best movies all time out there this would be in top three. As I always say, just watch the movie, which I say in almost every movie review I write . Every movie is worth watching unless they are directed by Michael Bay XDXD.
