Would you be pissed off if I powered down and left without saying goodbye?

A big fat 'no' from some, but they have ignored or don't follow me anyway. I was wondering, in light of recent 'goodbye' posts, if leaving unannounced this is cool or not.

source

Over the past few days, I've read a couple of posts and been contacted on both Discord and Whatsapp regarding a prominent and long-standing content creator who has recently announced that they are leaving Steem. If you aren't aware who the leaver is, I think it's not important for the discussion.

I should probably state that I have no intentions of leaving the network!

I have invested too much time and energy here to leave before the party starts - yes I'm bullish on a party or two in the future.

So back to the question in the title of the post, and using @tarazkp's latest to help put a couple of points across - why announce that you are leaving, and what are you actually leaving?

For the majority of the active/engaged community, to leave would mean freeing up plenty of hours in the day - too many to count for some, including me. I've written before with regards to my last relationship (even though the girl was also involved here) being put under huge stress due to the time I spent Steeming, and so exiting would suddenly free up an immense amount of time. We are a month away from mid-summer in the northern hemisphere, and there are sandy beaches very close by for some.

An argument could be made for hitting the beach, taking a few snaps or a surf video and uploading it at the end of the day - this wouldn't be too time consuming, would it? For a lucky 'few' though, this content might receive visitors, visitors that you wish to respond to and engage with, thanking them for their support, or trying to explain why the beach is full of grannies. This is going to take some more time, and then you should probably go see what they have been up to.

And then go check your drugwars/nextcolony/steemmonsters etc, etc. I think in leaving, there is certainly a 'where has my day gone' element for some.

You are also leaving a Steem wallet, likely empty but not destroyed, unless you throw away the keys...

Anything else? People.

Depending on your level of involvement, this could be a big or a small thing. Those who turned up to rent out their SP and get on with their lives will likely not have any trouble here, but for those who have written upwards of 30,000 comments in the past two years, there is certainly more to think about.

And so if the decision was made to cut ties with creating content on Steem, battling with Steemmonsters cards, etc, this for me would also include thoughts about the people I have conversed with, played games against, got drunk with at Steemfest, etc.

Leaving without so much as a thank you and a farewell, would seem rude to me. Isn't that what a final post is for - payout declined / bid-botted or otherwise?

But if you leave who will promote Majorca on steem?

taking a few snaps or a surf video and uploading it at the end of the day... trying to explain why the beach is full of grannies.

Surfs up on pensioner beach... there's a definite niche there 😆

I stumbled upon this post after falling down a rabbit hole. I wasn't around for all this stuff you speak of, so I don't know what went down, who left, all that. There's a damn good reason why, when I take a break, I just GO ON BREAK without explaining. No drama. Sure, people assume things while I'm gone, but I've mentioned many times how I'll take time off, and always come back. Fair warning, but I don't make a big deal out of it and always hope people can live with it, without taking it personally. I'm a real dude on this end, and I have a life, kind of. None of use owe to anyone else to be here... but I've seen countless folks fly off the handle, throw a big fit, say it's over... then they're back a week later eating their words. If you need a break, just take a break... then you can come back peacefully, if you so choose. A goodbye forever speech is something people do when they die. Why am I rambling here under your post?

  • @rentmoney(77)· 2654d

You are one of the more familiar names around here so your presence or lack of would certainly be noticed. But I have come to learn "real" life gets in the way of our online lives. So If you or anyone else suddenly stopped posting / powered down and left without a word then that is your / their business to do so and I would chalk it up to the aforementioned reason of Life getting in the way.

  • @revisesociology(82)· 2654d

It would be a little out of character if you were to just disappear without a farewell. Odd too give the time you've invested, and a huge loss given the quality you bring.

I read that farewell post, and then looked at the total earned SP of 10s of thousands, all powered down and cashed out gradually over 2 years.

    It's debatable whether that's a loss.

Then again, I've always found relentless positivity annoying, even more so when it's IMO overvalued.

  • @carlgnash(71)· 2657d

Well very little actually pisses me off but maybe I would be a little surprised, maybe even perturbed. I suppose for anyone who is well established here, stating that you are leaving could be seen as a common courtesy so people can adjust auto votes and what not

Mmh, it depends. If you were leaving without notice I wouldn't be pissed but I will have to admit that I will miss you and even would feel some kind of sadness!

Forget Bangkok I do think that the wife wants to go to Mallorca at the end of summer of in the beginning of the fall! Guess I know which hotel we don't have to book :)

  • @allover(64)· 2658d

I think saying goodbye, especially if the user has loyal followers who often engage, is the right thing to do @abh12345. There doesn't have to be a huge announcement however I think to end one's journey with a farewell post, to thank those loyal followers and to just sort of round-out the whole thing seems like good manners to me.

I wouldn't be annoyed or pissed off if someone didn't do so, a person I actively engaged with, however I would probably feel some disappointment and loss...And would probably wonder where the person vanished to until i forget them altogether.

I guess it comes down to the individual. For me I would do so, say farewell, however I would do the same in real life and so it just makes sense to me.

  • @chireerocks(75)· 2658d

@abh12345, We human beings are Emotional Beings and sometime some people say goodbye in heat of the moment but they really don't mean that, but some say Goodbye and will express everything negative regarding something.

If one really wants to leave then definitely exit with pleasant words and memories gives real value, if in future they want to return then Community will welcome with the same warmth and welcoming essence.

Have a pleasant time ahead and stay blessed.

I personally see it as people come and go. In life and here on the chain. If I were departing from my friends and family irl, I’d properly say goodbye. So I personally would probably do that here as well.

While I’ve made many friends here that I communicate with now via text or any of the other various chat apps, there are plenty that are just friends on the platform...but that’s still important to me. I know that when certain folks here have vanished without a trace, it left me wondering. So I think Wgile I wouldn’t make a big spectacle, I’d want those that possibly might care to know that I was bouncing for whatever reason.

  • @surfermarly(75)· 2658d

It's like in Harry Potter He-Who-Must-Not-Be-Named... eh pardon: She 😁

You can't ever please everybody, and it also shouldn't be the goal. Do what makes you feel good and what can potentially make many others feel good.

I don't think I ever received more comments on a post than on my last one. Reading through them put a huge smile on my face and it was the very best way for me to quit.

Saying goodbye can be a sign of respect towards the people (friends) who supported you, a polite way of finishing a fantastic journey and also a way of showing gratefulness for what one accomplished.

Now there will be always people criticizing you, no matter which way you choose. But that's nothing one should worry about, it's just how social media works :-)

But meeeh, you won't quit, so why even bother? haha

    xxx

It depends. If you're just a big-audience crossposter on multiple platforms who doesn't really engage on steem.....sure no biggie.

But if you've made real connections here it's really just a common courtesy to those you've met and supported to maybe explain and say goodbye.

It's got nothing to do with stake or powering down. If you've earned your stake legitimately and independently then its yours to do as you please.

Saying goodbye is classy given the time thay many have spent engaging. Also, thinking that they may never come back is wrong as users can always come back with little barriers.

For a second, you scared me, lol.

I assume I would not be pissed off, but I would keep wondering why... probably for the rest of my life. You can't do that to people. I think saying goodbye would just be the proper thing to do.

I didn't know about the goodbye post until just now. I think that if I would decide to leave for the same reasons, I would want to go out with a bang and write a very critical post about those reasons... but to each his own, I guess. (And I'm puzzled about the underlying reason to use bidbots on that post, btw)

I'm too attached to a lot of people here to leave like that. I can't even imagine what it would be like to leave everyone behind, just like that...

(I do think most people who leave don't plan to do so. They just fade away, slowly - because life has its ways.)

  • @diogosantos(62)· 2659d

I would be sad about that decision, because I´m assuming you were going to sell that STEEM and waste thousands of dollars. Just like I feel when I see these goodbye posts.

But, I´m happy that you are here to stay!

  • @soyrosa(75)· 2659d

I just posted about taking a break. I would definitely write a goodbye post if that time ever came. But that also means I believe I add value or have made real friendships to this place. I really hate it when I think of someone because they left an impression on me and then have to find out they just stopped posting. Like 'don't you think I care?!'

But then again, I've been blogging in communities 15 years ago as well, and I still think of some of these people from time to time. So I know how much of an impression even 'online' people can make on a person.

A goodbye is a simple yet important thing to do/say/write :-) You can't ever know who 'needs' to hear that.

  • @redheadpei(72)· 2659d

If people want to make a goodbye post and power down or just go silently that’s their prerogative in my books. I think the low price of Steem has been a turnoff to some. I will admit I don’t like it when someone I interact with a lot on Steemit is announcing they are leaving. A few friends have been silent for awhile but I was delighted one just made a comment and a post today after nothing for 2 months. Steemit takes up a lot of time. One has to chose wisely where to spent their energy. There are so many discords, apps and platforms on here it can be overwhelming. If it’s someone having health issues or too much on their plate it’s certainly understandable but they could take a break without leaving completely. My question is: Why would anyone want to leave all the wonderful folks here?😂

  • @johndoer123(68)· 2659d

I wouldn't be mad, but i would be sad. But I have known a couple people who left because of the drama that exists here. There was no good bye post, and i don't blame them nor was i upset with them. However, they were smaller accounts, without too much invested here. But, I would hope that those who have a vested stake(especially those like you who help so many in the community) would say goodbye. If for no other reason then to let those being helped be in the know, and keep them from just being left hanging. In any case, if I left, i would feel compelled to say good bye to all my great Steemian neighbors and friends. I hope you continue your positive mindset and journey along with us in this magical adventure called Steemit. I send all my love brother...and of course hugs.🤗

  • @steemstreems(62)· 2659d

Ha! I don't think I would be mad. Then again I don't really know you (IRL), so why should I attach a lot of energy to that.

On the other hand, if someone like yourself, who has preached the STEEM gospel (so to speak) leaves, I can see the angst that could develop from that.

I just think people need to enjoy STEEM for what it is and focus on making it better. If someone leaves, you can see it as a defeat and take it personally -- or keep on trucking and move on to the next thing ;-)

All of this is hypothetical of course. I am not saying I don't care about you or STEEM :-0. Just think there has to be a balance in your passions. Disappointed, yes. Mad maybe, but probably not for long! HaHa!

  • @dalz(81)· 2659d

Who will review my mediocre analysis then :)

  • @heymattsokol(69)· 2659d

It's good to say good-bye so one has that last chance to say a few things to their followers. Besides, a person might decide to come back one day -- may as well leave on good terms.

  • @flipstar(72)· 2659d

I think there should be a good bye post.

And I make this statement with no arguments.

  • @beeyou(59)· 2659d

A lot of us would surely wonder and miss you bunches if you power down and left without saying goodbye. I miss Sylvia's posts and am saddened to see the strain there. She did say goodbye in her own way when we last chat on discord. You are correct with the intensity and time consumed with this platform. Is it worth it? Depends on everyone's situation.

Looking back, so many hours were spent online. I love having the free time now to spend with my little ones. I was never a prominent content creator so it's okay that I'm not as active anymore. But YOU, many of us started our journey here and stayed because of the support of the friends we met then. We will surely miss you, so don't ever think you can get away without saying goodbye. :)

I checked out the goodbye tag, guess people are moving on to different pathways.

  • @bashadow(70)· 2659d

I think it is a hard call, post about leaving, not post about leaving and just don't post/comment/vote anymore. I'm not a big fan of Youtube or Facebook, or really any other social media thing, my wife is always mentioning someone that rage quit, and yet still the rants go on.

I used to be a regular back in the late 80's early 90's on a couple of chat room area's, some people would constantly be saying "enough, I'm Done, I'm out-of-here", only to never disappear and just keep their little "Look at me" chants going.

Some people I have gotten to enjoy the content from on here, so for those yes I would like to know if they are leaving or moving on to what they feel are greener pastures. So in those cases a "Hey I've had a lot of fun on here, but..." good bye would be nice, so long as they leave the drama out of it.

Life does get busy, and any social media takes time. Sometimes we slow down a little, step away for a few days, and then one day we realize "wow, where has the time gone, I wonder what Blah blah blah, is up to on steemit" and then we go and look. In that kind of case no goodbye post was made, life just got busy. So I try to look at disappeared accounts as just that, life got busy for them elsewhere, and they may or may not be back.

  • @aussieninja(70)· 2659d

I'd definitely say goodbye. It seems like the only polite thing to do. So many of the people I started with just fell away... and it does hurt a little. There's a bond formed when you set out on a new adventure and I've honestly been concerned when people have fallen away, I just want to know they're okay. The farewell post is a nice way of saying "I'm not dead, I'm just doing other things."

If you left, I'd be so mad. So. Goddamn. Mad.

  • @brittandjosie(76)· 2659d

Ok are people leaving ?? 😇 they need a special tag: quitter ! Its true ( life without in most cases hidden steemitlife ) would leave more time to do ALOT of other things, but then I , you or the reader off this comment will miss out on great things.

Yes great things ! They Will be happening in the hopefully near future! Money runs people, its not running me thats why i dont need the quit tag i am making a new one #

And i accept the people leaving without saying goodbye and wish them all great and good join FB again its fun😇

Truth is that I can't even leave because steem is life, I can't leave what I've put in sweat, blood and water when the dividend of steem hasn't even started paying.

  • @erikah(83)· 2659d

Now that you mention, I can think of someone we both know although it wasn't a good by post according to the user, it was more like a taking a break post which leaves room to return. Many people have disappeared without saying a word and i was wondering what's happened to them. I guess it depends on the person. I could not cash out and leave without saying a word. I have plenty friends here who would be wondering what's happened to me. What I have even more is those who are saying good bye every two month 😁 I can't respect those. I expect people to keep their word. So let's return to our mutton, I see @cicisaja has already threatened you, so don't you dare to disappear, you're not allowed! 😁

  • @cryptoandcoffee(85)· 2659d

You would be easy to find anyway lol. The only guy floating around on a pink lilo. I think it would be difficult to just leave. If you are earning upwards of 100-200 Steem per week you would be crazy. The party hasn't even started yet so why throw away everything you have worked so hard for. If I disappeared for a day or two you need to send out a search party lol. Saying goodbye means you are somewhat decent as it is manners and showing respect. Enough said.

  • @oldtimer(76)· 2659d

It's alright we never liked you anyway..... 😎😎😎.

I think it would just be like a bad break up. Everybody mad at the person even though I'm sure there are reasons behind it. For me I wouldn't quit. I might take a break for 6 months and see how things pan out but for someone who has put as much in as the one leaving I think it's madness to leave altogether. We have issues here but there is a lot of good too and hopefully a big future. Seems like such a waste.

I think the role you have played also makes a difference.

If you feel that your words may have influenced some and now you have new information, it would be important to me to ensure that I had let my following know. Trust matters to me.

  • @tarazkp(86)· 2659d

    You are dead to me.

  • @meesterboom(81)· 2659d

I would be narked just as I am so fecking narked at all of my first wave group of homies that did exactly that after the last bull run. C£&rs.

Haha. But you are right. It's not just steem/Steemit it's the whole shebang. The thing it often exposes is the false front that these people put up to get in on a site driven (initially) be rewards.

  • @anomadsoul(80)· 2659d

Nothing wrong in saying good bye. If you left, I would question your reasons (not the ones you state in the post, but the ones behind it), the way you announce it and what you mention in that good bye post (and what you cunningly leave out).

I know you maybe not as much as an irl friend but, enough to perhaps be angry at you for not saying goodbye (rude dude, wtf?) but also enough to criticize you for the way you go through this "season finale" of yours.

But then again, if we are worhty enough to know why you are leaving, do we really need to find out about it on a post? I could just receive a Telegram message or a whatsapp group update. And if we are not, is it really worthy to make a post about it?

Food for thought. I just know that, the moment I stop being bullish about Steem, and the day I decide to leave, I won´t trash talk about it on a post or shill other projects. I will just leave. If I´m thinking about the summer and the beach hotties, there´s no need to make a loud exit, at least for me.

  • @sumatranate(69)· 2659d

I have two thoughts about leaving.

Expected or Unexpected Sometimes "leaving" is unexpected. There is a life event that takes over, which causes something to give - sometimes that is the Steem community.

Sometimes people plan their exit, which in that case I would hope they would be willing to say proper goodbyes.

Temporary or Forever I have had to "leave" Steem for weeks at a time, but I have always come back. Sometimes taking a step back gives us a new found appreciation for what we have. "Absence makes the heart grow fonder."

But to leave for good, at this stage of the game, is immature. I agree that there is a party or two yet to come.

Will blogging be the future of Steem? Maybe yes. Maybe no. I can still participate, even if the main activity that brought me here is not the main focus anymore.

  • @slobberchops(82)· 2659d

  • @coininstant(69)· 2659d

  • @cicisaja(65)· 2659d
