Important Changes to Steemit.com and Wallet

Screen Shot 2019-04-01 at 4.41.15 PM.png

Today we released new software to power steemit.com. Steemit.com now only has social features, and the web wallet (where you view your token balances, initiate transfers, power up, etc.) is powered by a separate application located at steemitwallet.com. Since steemit.com no longer includes any of the token-related features of Steem, this application (what you know as steemit.com) only requires the use of one’s Posting Key.

Important

*That means that you will ONLY be able to use your Posting Key when you try to sign in to steemit.com. This will increase your safety when using the site. It also means that when you navigate to your wallet through steemit.com you will be redirected to [steemitwallet.com](steemitwallet.com) which is our new standalone wallet application.*

To learn more about your Master Password and private keys, check out our Steem Basics post here or watch the following video:

Screen Shot 2019-02-20 at 1.55.11 PM.png

An added benefit of this change is that because it’s a smaller application than the full Condenser, it will consume fewer resources on both our machines, and yours.

Key Backup PDF

Now that we have split Condenser into two separate applications (Social and Wallet), we are requiring that users sign in with the proper keys, which will improve user security. Those users who are inputting their Master Password for everything will now get a warning that informs them when they are attempting to sign in with the incorrect key or password, and gently guides them toward either getting the weakest key (the posting key) or downloading a PDF backup of all their keys.

The Mission

Our goal at Steemit is to support amazing online communities with unparalleled cryptocurrency incentives. To that end, we envision a community-centric web application that is open source and economically sustainable. Splitting Condenser into separate Social and Wallet applications will constitute a major step toward accomplishing this goal by enabling us to improve each application faster, while consuming fewer resources, and maximizing user security by enhancing the client-side signing experience.

Hi Ned, do you know what is happening with the ‘Steembot Tracker’ site. Having trouble sending bids. Click on ‘check & submit’ & nothing happens.

Hey there, I think the only backups I have are all in browser localstorage. So I can recover an image where I'm signed in and can post, but can no longer export my keys via the web app. What should I do?

edit: I had the master password saved in the browser's password manager, apparently. Wondering what I would have done if I didn't.

  • @benn(36)· 2691d

the process should be revisited. there is more knowledge to be added especially on how to get access to these new keys.

  • @hijosdelhombre(66)· 2692d

Why not helping people to improve their security with a slider with % in the start page or once they've log in. The % will show how much of security meassures he took or learnt and once they get 100% they can unlock a gift or something.

Creating positive circles like the nature of Steem.

  • @darkprincearmon(25)· 2693d

I was about to tweet a few angry post about this, till I figured out what was going on. I'm no power user here yet, but I didn't like that I wasn't notified about the changes, nor how to fix my problems. I think the UI is far from a good social network like site, but that is a complaint for another time. Maybe there is a way to maybe email information about changes? Even sites like coinbase have come along way to get information out about changes and news. Twitter is a thing most people pay attention to for info.

I am unable to log into my wallet and I dont get the option of the PDF either like I did on my other account. Do you know where I can find this PDF?

  • @inspire1(66)· 2695d

I've just tried powering up 54.814 STEEM. The wheel is still spinning for the past 5 minutes at least. If I login to steemitwallet on another page, I can see my steem power balance 2245.710 is still the same, but the steem of 54.814 that was supposed to be powered up is now showing a balance of 0.01. So, I would say that something is definitely wrong. It seems like I just lost 54 steem and have a wheel just spinning in another window under the "convert to steem power" screen just stuck spinning. Its probably been about 10 minutes since I started writing this while this power up was supposed to happen.

I don't like what I see. This makes me feel like I should be powering down. What is wrong with the power up process? It used to take 1 or 2 seconds at most.

  • @reveurgam(60)· 2695d

You guys are clearly overwhelmed and don't have customer support/service/success - never had as far as I'm concerned.

Your mission states: "Our goal at Steemit is to support amazing online communities with unparalleled cryptocurrency incentives." Not there yet. Not even close.

I also notice that your mission completely ignores the user experience, and your app really is lacking on the UI. For example, I have 16GB RAM but the sheer volume of comments on this post is overwhelming my computer. We have no way to do so many things, including limiting the number of comments shown per page. I'm trying to be patient but...I earn nothing for the amount of work I put in, whereas people who put up shit messages and are in voting blocs earn lots of money. That's just monkeyshine and removes incentives for people like me.

Hi, I'm basically a tech challenged person and I don't understand where I find the "Logging in with non-posting key" and where I "download the pdf file with keys and instructions" from. Please help as I'd like to be able to check my wallet. Thanks in advance for your help. :D

  • @mrosenquist(72)· 2697d

Excellent! Using the minimum amount of sensitive information, only the posting key, is a great move to improve overall account security. Nicely done!

    Dear @steemitblog,

Since the split I have experienced an issue with my wallet, which I elaborated on here: https://steemit.com/steemit/@jeanlucsr/dear-steemit-please-fix-this

I declined pay out to prove that it is for reporting purpose only.

  • @beingtheuniverse(57)· 2697d

No matter what You actually do, just be mindful that there are steemit users who struggle to survive. Who can't quite make a living, but keep betting on steemit to be one means to secure funding. Whatever You do regarding the availability of these funds at any - for a bad example: Western Union, who fleece those in need of funds movement. When small funds are moved, there are always problems. When I want to move a billion dollar - see how smooth that goes. Thank You for considering the severity of all matters related to members' funds.

  • @theceltictraders(62)· 2697d

This feels like a hack and I feel like I'm screwed. I can't collect now. What's the fix? Is my investment in Steemit better off being cast into the water of the whales at this point? Plankton feeling the pain of wordpress @steempress and now result of failure to collect. Dropdown offsite appearing like fishing site, and recovery option offered upon purchase of steemit website via SteemCreate.com now does not open? It's heartbreaking really. I'm basically done with the option of Steemit and wordpress. My investment in media may have done all it's really going to do considering @Steemit.

  • @nomogreed(51)· 2698d

I do not understand any of this and when I signed up I didn't understand. A guy on Steemit talked me through alot of this stuff but honestly I do not understand and I am mostly internet illiterate. My family is really confused about all these changes and they do not understand the differences between the passwords (about 7 of us with Steemit profiles!)

So what happens if we lose the PDF file containing all the passwords how do we log in? What if we have to log in from different devices? Sorry, but I don't think the expert Steemit people understand that many of us are clueless when it comes to much of this stuff we just enjoy using the site and the content and engaging with the users.

  • @versability(54)· 2698d

Got locked out of my account after spending 30 days in jail. Can get into the blog and Dtube, but my wallet is logged out. Saved password doesn't work, so unsure why it's not letting me back into my account. Can't find keys anywhere because I usually just looked in Steem. Guess I'm no longer posting here.

  • @sutter(58)· 2698d

I'm experiencing an error that will not allow me to collect.

  • @lifestyle8(36)· 2698d

I used the correct username and KEY and successfully logged in. But I still got this hint when I first landed. I am not sure if my account is a problem now. https://www.pinpng.com/picture/iomTRb_confused-girl-png-asking-question-clip-art-transparent/

  • @abdt(66)· 2699d

All good , sounds good. how to claim rewards ?

  • @khufu(55)· 2699d

How are we supposed to send a memo now?

I log into my wallet with the master key and go to send a memo but that requires a memo key, so I go to keys and permissions and click on reveal key next to the memo key and it wants me to log in again. Then when I go through all that I land on the same page and the memo key is still hidden.

I can't reveal my active or memo keys.

I've lost all faith in the developers here, this is giant leap backwards. I'm powering down and getting out before these clowns sink this ship.

  • @tuck-fheman(75)· 2699d

@Ned ... how about an auto-logout feature for your online wallet???

  • @wizzdom(69)· 2700d

i think it's one of stupid update without announcing, we can just use active key for our security and implement 2-FA, why we need second domain?

  • @drutter(73)· 2700d

The wallet no longer allows us to stay logged in, even if we check "stay logged in". After every click, every refresh, the key needs to be entered AGAIN. Since this key isn't meant to be kept saved in the browser, many of us keep it somewhere off our device, and retrieve it only when needed. That used to be once or twice a day, for me. Now it's dozens of times a day. That's a HUGE security hazard caused by this supposed security upgrade! So many people are locked out of their accounts now, or locked out of the financial half of their accounts! We can't keep destroying our own community like this!

  • @drutter(73)· 2700d

That looks really dumb. There shouldn't be a separate site logo for the wallet, LOL!

  • @jawadakhtar88(50)· 2700d

Thank you for this amazing update. Kindly let me know that how can I get my private posting key, as i haven't saved it anywhere else and now i cannot log into my wallet. I would be waiting for any response, as it took me 2 years to get to 257SP and all of a sudden i cannot log in.

  • @prettynicevideo(72)· 2701d

Why fix something that's not broken? I know, right! BUT!!!! i will say this. As we progress into software development hackers are progressing along with it. So I can sorta see why your changing the format... It's just a pain in the butt and hard to just trust and do another thing... So Im 50% 50% on this. I DID FREAK OUT AND THOUGHT THE WORLD WAS GONNA END BUT....

  • @drutter(73)· 2701d

Please have the "blog" link from steemitwallet go to the link in the same window (or tab) - not in a separate tab! It's almost as though you are encouraging people to "leave their wallets hanging open", instead of closing them when finished with them.

  • @hndmarshall(54)· 2701d

What the hell???...it states to keep the keys safe and copied to a safe location but you cant get to the keys!...I click on view and am prompted to sign in so i do then i click on view again same thing!...you can not view the keys to copy them to a safe location...not gonna work from my point of view..people are locked out of certain functions...i only got signed in because I just happen to keep one key copied on my phone cant get these copied cant get it to show them to me

  • @reveurgam(60)· 2702d

Where might I be able to find the Key Backup PDF? You didn't post a link...

  • @reveurgam(60)· 2702d

Thank you for clarifying things, and for the innovative effort to improve Steemit! I have used Steemit since early 2017 and always found aspects of it confusing, unwieldy and/or in need of improvement. The video helped me to understand at least the 1st and 4th keys.

With that in mind, I would like to request:

    1. A better editor. This basic editor offers nothing for novices, especially since many of the documents created 2 years ago about using HTML and MDL are now partially or entirely incorrect because they either suggested HTML that is no longer usable, or they suggest using styling features that the editor no longer possesses (which is everything). Using HTML and MDL can be hit or miss, and not just because of the conflicts between the two languages or the limited amount that can be used, but also due to the lack of documentation and links that users can click to learn how to format their work. I had to research and write several articles on editing here to help ME remember it all and help others. One article I wrote the other day, in which I made a list with MDL, had to be rewritten because of that conflict, forcing me to switch the entire, lengthy, list to the HTML ordered list tag, which has its own problems.

    2. A 5th key that can be used for up/down-voting and resteeming but NOT posting and editing. The reasons for this SHOULD be obvious but, at the risk of seeming condescending, if someone gets your posting key because you gave it to a voting bloc, 3rd-party website or 3rd-party app, Malicious Owners have the power to not only down/upvote where you wouldn't agree, but to also create false posts, trash existing posts by changing the text, including spam and libeling people, which can result in the person whose posting key was abused to lose rep, be flagged and so on, which can have potentially long-term consequences. Worst of all, such deleterious actions could be done by a bot app, so the MalOwn wouldn't even break a sweat. Thus, the 5th key would be at the bottom of the hierarchy.

    3. A way to delete messages (active key?).

    4. A list of all available keywords or, better yet, a tree categorization system that will reduce unintentional overlap/duplicate categories (due to different spelling/ounctuation/words, such as golden-oldies/goldenoldies and food/cuisine). This has long been a problem for me, because the list shows popular keywords - not all of them - and many are related to cryptocurrency, which doesn't help those of us who don't write about that. This inadequacy in Steemit makes it very easy to associate your article with "dead" keywords that will not help you get an audience.

    5. Tied with this should be a counter showing how many posts are in that category to help people avoid dead zones.

    6. Finally, an option for curators to suggest categories for articles would allow people to help in SEO of writers' articles, with the authors making the choice of which keywords (aside from the main one) to use, and which to discard, which could increase their audience

    7. System-wide announcements like the one I saw for this article. This is the FIRST Steemit-wide alert I've gotten since 2017. I honestly do NOT know where to look for updates from the people who control Steemit and the onus is on you guys to alert us to changes. Sure, we don't necessarily use best practices for security but, then, I didn't even know until relatively recently that there are now 4 keys!

    8. A flag for plagiarism and a flag to show you don't own what you're posting (the latter prevents the former and also disables payment on upvotes). I have seen a lot of people earning money on here by ripping off someone else's work, including photos, and putting them on Steemit. That's like compilers on YouTube who take other people's clips and put them together into a large compilation of funny stuff, and then get rich off other people's clips. I find it to be unsavory at best.

If someone puts up someone else's work, they should either turn off payments or produce something substantial with the piece they grabbed being a supporting portion of the article or video instead of the whole focus, and also give credit to the source. If it is free-use material, they can still give credit if they want to support the creators, or not.

If you have any questions, please let me know! I hope you'll read this!

  • @chickyrogue(34)· 2702d

lately steemit is a hostile NOT USER FRIENDLY place... alot of us have not too much savey and this entire change was not handled well

i have no clue what the hell you all have done to this site it usta be fun

so no one can access their wallets with 2 cents big deal this was not as this site was sold we were suppose to be paid and rewarded for our time and participation but instead you have taken the 2 cents we never really had

    there my 2 cents

  • @michaelweddle(48)· 2702d

I've had a problem since the beginning, which I've never been able to resolve. When I originally signed up, I typed in the wrong email address and have never been able to correct it. My actual email address is: climatechangesongwriter@gmail.com. However, when I signed onto Steemit, I erroneously typed in: climatechangesongerwriter. So two questions: 1) How do I correct this? 2) Will the new change lock me out from my writing? I've written nearly 500 articles and would hate to lose access to them.

  • @rafroldan(48)· 2702d

from today I can not make any transaction in my wallet, yesterday I could do it but today, I get an error saying that I do not have authority, and I can not see the new keys and when I try to generate it again the same error always

  • @masaitv(41)· 2702d

What I would like to do is get rid of this account for good, it has served no purpose to me ever since I opened it. I dont understand why one is allowed to open it but cannot close it, it's like holding people hostage. You make a post and it cannot be deleted, this is bull shit. None of this is sitting well with me!

What theater??? If Steemit.inc has no more desire, then switches off!

With the HF 20 you neutered new users, with the Condeser you castrated the API and everyone involved in developing tools. With the advertising you are now also frightening away the last user.

If you intend to drive Steemit against the wall, then congratulations, you are on the best way. I can't believe it with the speed you're currently showing to scare away the steemites that steemite is experiencing the year 2020.

    Was fur ein Theader???

  • @lazyteatime(59)· 2702d

This may be a good idea. I have two smart phone and now I could log in one with posting, and one with the wallet. It's just like the hot wallet and cold wallet, more secure if we log from different device.

  • @ayijufridar(73)· 2703d

I was really uncomfortable with this change that happened precisely when people were going away from Steemit. Steemit has eliminated blogs that are spaces for communication and more personal, access to wallets is also more difficult. I am sure, many Steemians feel the same with me.

Hell, let's try to mine all content so when I go throught my favs I follow, I can give them the LOVE. Anyhoo, LOVE this place and plan to support Steem to the fullest and I appreciate the platform. AHve a great night@steemblog and THANKS SO MUCH.. now I am off to figure out my Partiko.

  • @michaellandau(53)· 2703d

If I need help understanding the keys, is there some way to contact you? The biggest problem that I have is getting help.

  • @midlet(74)· 2703d

Well, I guess I'm up on the Steem happenings so I didn't get caught off guard or anything, but did you all mean for it to constantly sign you out? If I refresh the page, it signs me out, I even just clicked on the setting page and when I went back to the wallet I was signed out.

Also if you go to the wallet page from steemit, the back button doesn't take you back to steemit.

All these things are making this a pretty terrible UX for me, but I'm hoping these are bugs. If it didn't do these things I wouldn't mind it.

My question is...why? Why make it so difficult? And how does it work with our earnings now? I thought the system was working quite good, but you need to check out dTube and dSound...they won't play any of my songs or videos. That are the bugs I encounter. I love the Steemit vision, please make it work better...not worse.

  • @cjsdns(75)· 2703d

There is a lot of effort. However, this operation seems to have a major problem with the encryption key. Is my account hacked? There seems to be a problem with the system. This is a very important story.

  • @ragnarokdel(60)· 2703d

It's so stupid to have to go to a different website to use your wallet. Oh look at that my dark mode doesnt work so I have to take a solar flare to the eyeballs every time I want to interact with the wallet. Thanks but no thanks.

PS: I love how the wallet is in a foreign language and the configuration page doesnt allow me to change that. Thanks

  • @awfunn(39)· 2703d

I think it's a good thing and that way it's better to manage our accounts both the publication and the wallet, but I still do not get used to it because it messed up a bit. What do you think?

Pienso que es algo bueno y que de esa forma es mejor administrar nuestras cuentas tanto la de publicación como la de la billetera, pero aún no me acostumbro ya que se me desordenó un poco. ¿Qué piensan ustedes?

  • @teaeyeknow(41)· 2703d

Thank you Steemit! You have successfuly got so confused that I really dont know where to start with all of these. Some of us here arent full time blogger, so why make things more complicated.

  • @thoughts-in-time(68)· 2703d

BUG? - I pointed the link on my wallet profile to a condenser, then after a day or so the link on the condenser changed to match my wallet profile. Now, I can't edit the contents in either site?

Update: Correction, I can edit it in the wallet now and it mirrors those changes to the Steemit condenser, yet, I'm not sure if wallet is the correct place to put the Public Profile Settings? My guess is, you put it there because it requires an active key to update, but it still feels a bit off.

  • @ihashblox(59)· 2703d

Bye steemit. This new "change" is for the worst. Now with ads. Yeah this is now too much, goodbye.

  • @damonvoks(38)· 2703d

Qubes OS users might like to use RISKS for managing their passwords (and other secret stuff). I'm using it since a month and I'm SO happy with it! I'm sure that who's on Linux can easily use it too

  • @eddard(60)· 2703d

Congratulations steemit you just managed to take a simple working thing and complicated it beyond any reason or usability if I'm using the wrong key I'm affecting my own security if things go wrong my fault simple

If you were so concerned about people saving their passwords 2 factor authentication would seem like a much easier solution

  • @darkflame(70)· 2703d

@steemitblog @ned I still can't reveal my posting key or my active key or my memo key, this steemitwallet site is glitchy. It doesn't work. It says to login again to reveal, but you enter your key and nothing happens. I am not overly happy with this update. If I am having this issue guaranteed there are others as well.

  • @sternblitz(51)· 2703d

    Hello

Ok so i need the "master passwd" for the steemitwallet and the "posting key passwd" for steemit or am i wrong? No i can use the "posting key passwd" for both?

  • @astromaniak(69)· 2703d

It's a bit difficult to get used to. Instinctively, I click on the wallet and now it complicates a bit.

For new users, it will not be encouraging. An additional difficulty.

  • @batoysmart(28)· 2703d

Although we have read steemit articles for quite some time, we have only recently become authoring members. We have seen this actual message when we were entering our master keyword and we assure everyone that the message is very helpful and leads you to the information you need via pdf. It might almost be TOO helpful, LOL... Thanks for the update @batoysmart thanks you!

  • @jacobtothe(77)· 2703d

Ads? OK. I get it. You need a revenue stream.

Ads in my own post feed on my own profile? Not OK.

  • @maxblaschke(62)· 2703d

How do i find my keys

  • @builderofcastles(74)· 2703d

Again you have made a VERY BIG CHANGE in a VERY BAD WAY.

You have most likely locked people out of the financial portions of their accounts with no recourse.

Why didn't you start up a new wallet site, and then advertise that it is there, and to get people ready for it? Tell them that its coming.

No, you just drop a shit ton of bricks on them. Not nice.

  • @kbarrett(48)· 2703d

Wait... so we need our key in order to login into the new wallet, but need our wallet in order to access our key???

  • @majowonline(55)· 2703d

The whole password thing was bad enough already now we’re making it worse.

  • @worldtraveller32(64)· 2703d

Hi all. I just like to point out some constructive comments about this recent update about Steemit.

I will agree. there should have been better form of information and notification of the changes. I understand there is a blog on this. however many of us are also just casual users of steemit, just post sometimes here, we may or may not spend much time on the platform as it is. therefore spending time to looking for the posts that mention of important updates. There should be direct replies or emails to everyones accounts regarding the change

the new update. I understand there may be bugs, and bug happen in transition times. However right now the changes are a negative. many people had steemit as auto login from chrome and may have forgotten their keys. so now many are locked out of their accounts and funds. not good

also to transition back from steemit to wallet, it is much harder now, more complicated.

so perhaps i put this forth and maybe further updates can be made on this again these are meant to be constructive comments and not to be taking as direct complaints. thanks for your support

  • @sharkmonsters(64)· 2703d

Do you know why I'm not even going to read the comments?

Because after enough time here, you realize that nobody ever likes anything.

  • @lordvdr(62)· 2703d

I agree with the posts about a way to go back to social from wallet. This would be very helpful.

Also, when logging into wallet on mobile, it seems to not do anything when you click "Login". It actually does log you in, but it just sits on the login page like nothing happened.

  • @thejohalfiles(61)· 2703d

Steemit wallet should integrate SteemConnect + Keychain to further increase security.

  • @monotharch(62)· 2703d

Maybe this is good in the long run (maybe), but it was a bit confusing.

This explanation makes perfect sense and is appreciated. The implementation helped me realize the negative aspects of having the free file extension "AdAware" so I disabled and disposed of it. Otherwise, my wallet page would not come up. I learned, via quick trial and error to access, that AdAware tracks every bit of your online usage - incognito or not. While it was nice to no longer have to sit through ads on Yoo-Toob, I will simply go back to forwarding through them! Thank you so much again @steemitblog for helping to protect our accounts here - mine was compromised once (I must have entered some silly "contest"?) and it was not pleasurable!

How do I reveal my private active key? It prompts me to login when I click reveal, then nothing happens. I see nothing that prompts me to enter a different password, or which one is required.

Please do not tell me I need to login with my active key to reveal my active key.

EDIT: Had to enter my master password, and then it worked. Probably the first time I dug that out of my secure location since I created my account. Hope nobody with bad intentions was spying on me. After copying my various keys, I logged out, then back in with my posting key. I do not want cookies or anything storing my master password.

  • @yahialababidi(71)· 2703d

Hello, @steemitblog I only have my Posting Key. I am now locked out of my wallet. I am sure others are in the same boat. What can be done to solve this situation?

    Trying not to panic

  • @eitsky(50)· 2703d

I'm having trouble logging in to my wallet as I only have my private key. My posting key was always accessible through the wallet so I didn't see the need. What are my options?

  • @moemanmoesly(70)· 2703d

Wow Steemit is actually doing something new thanks for the clear explanation too @steemitblog

  • @jrcornel(82)· 2703d

Only issue I've had thus far is that any time I login to wallet using my active key, it logs me off any time I hit refresh... have to keep logging back in unless using owner key.

  • @kimmysomelove42(59)· 2703d

Every single password all 8 of them I wrote down are too long now to enter for password, what is going on please help? I tried not entering STM as beginning that doesn't spent 2 hours on this wTF? the Active, owner posting memo all of them are tooo long now for the wallet password.. this is insane and sucks!!

  • @melooo182(71)· 2703d

I see adds when access steemit from a link on discord, other than that I haven't seen them.

Anyway I was going to report a UI bug with the Wallet site, the "Night mode" seems to deactivate after closing the window, which might be linked to the fact that I always have to login again every time I open it.

What else, ah yes I tried to use the "Reveal" button for private keys but didn't seem to work either.

  • @bobinson(67)· 2703d

For some reason Firefox nightly plugins are alerting me about the SSL certificate. Not sure why.

    1. The certificate is issued by Amazon ? - ideally it has to be say a cert issuer like LetsEncrypt ?
    2. The SSLlabs test results are very good

  • @pascale(54)· 2703d

Could you not have warned THEN implemented? I have not with me my password as I'm traveling and can't access my wallet now as my posting keys aren't accessible anymore. This is bad communication and users management. :/
It's communication 101. Explain THEN DO so people can prep and check they have all infos within reach.

  • @freecrypto(74)· 2703d

not Blindly but Highly appreciated your decision as being an owner & CEO of Dapp I can understand that managing all the things would not be easy sometimes.

Loving that atleast steemit is not being afraid from making decisions I see many people doesn't like this decision but then too you people have believe on what you do 😊, I hope or maybe I can say definitely their might be some good intentions behind this :) .

Wishing you people all the luck😊

  • @inalittlewhile(68)· 2703d

At least on the Chrome browser, it won't allow me to return to Steemit once I click the wallet tab. I have to open a new tab and open steemit all over again. Better to just right click and open the wallet in a new tab to begin with. Why not just have the wallet open in a new tab?

Making things more complicated...for no reason at all. The market is improving but you keep fucking up, it is not another website with another access for the wallet that Steemit needs. Bad priorities.

I didn't upvote this post because you declined payment anyway. Thanks for informing us anyway.

No disrespect to you or anything like that but it feels like "the government" here already.

Although several witnesses did mention about the changes that's going to happen, there was no public consensus (are we supposed to just accept everything from you nowadays?)nor PRIOR AND PROPER ANNOUNCEMENTS on HOW THIS NEW WALLET OPERATES nor an idiot proof post on HOW THIS NEW WALLET OPERATES has been written.

Please be reminded that many Steemians don't have English as their first languages so please make posts like this on layman's terms, we already are aware that you're all smarty pants, tech savy and intelligent. The words in CAPS are just highlighted words, not yelling btw.

So, please let me clarify a few things because your post just kind'a declared that there's a new wallet and that we only need to use our posting key to post in Steemit.

This is actually inconvenient compared to how it was before - we log in and just claim our rewards then post and cast our votes with the knowledge that we have been powered up but now it would take two logging in, first on the wallet to power ourselves up and then to steemit.com to post. Is it really no longer possible to also claim our rewards at steemit.com so we will just have to access our wallets when we want to power down, up or withdraw some steem or sbd? EDIT 2: On the other hand, it may work against vote buying .. or I wish lol!

    • To log in which key do we need to use? EDIT 3: I just clicked on it and it's actually suggesting "ideally your posting key yes? And then we can do any transaction we want which would work the same way it did back then okay, am getting the hang of it!

Btw, we appreciate that you're all doing your best to provide us the best service there is, we see that but this one is one sort that surely provides inconvenience as well. Once again, no offense but I for one, really liked the old system but maybe this new system has been designed for security purposes.

edit 1 : comment upvoted for visibility

EDIT 4: I have no problem loggin in, atm, I have managed to collect my rewards but that's all I did for now, since you're on a test phase. I also noticed that the other features which I would not mention here were also put there. Now, I get it why this post says Steemit is really just - if I may word it - purely for posting, upvoting and commenting now!

  • @jerrytsuseer(73)· 2703d

I for one and very very upset by this change. A. I am no crypto expert, I don't normally access Steemit from my phone, and last night went to my wallet and couldn't get there because I have no clue how to access the keys from my phone. B. I did not sign up for steempeak or partiko or esteem or any of the DOZENS of things I've seen suggested in this thread, I signed up for, and grew to LOVE STEEMIT, which has now morphed beyond recognition. C. I HATE SEEING ADVERTS everywhere.

I support the move - you can't have enough security nowadays. However I have two things to complain about...

Unannounced changes like these are not really a good thing... Lots of people were stressed this morning (or night depending on the timezone) I don't check my wallet so frequently so... didn't even notice the change until I was called upon -whats going on. Speaking of which - here is the second complaint. With a single click - I can go to wallet however there is no link/button on the page that leads back to blogging.... I find that very poorly done.

Other than that I support the move. The only constant is change! KEEP ON ROCKING IN THE FREE WORLD!

  • @jubei333(67)· 2703d

Click the wallet link Another tab
Click the wallet link The same tab.

  • @honolulu(72)· 2703d

Would be nice to implement a "Back to Steemit.com" Button or in the dropdown of the profile...

Everytime I go to wallet I can't navigate back to Steemit.com and have to open it in a new tab...

    Comes to my mind:

Maybe you refrained from that idea because not all people using the wallet also use Steemit to access the STEEM block chain...

Anyway for me personally it would make things easier :-)

Further I am happy to see that there is still worked to improve Steemit.com Beta and obvisiously there seem to be many plans to really make it great :-)

So my password was saved in my browser (Samsung browser)

I can still post here on Steem.com but I cant log into my wallet, so even though I never logged out of Steem.com -I can no longer see my keys, because they arent here at all, they are on Steemwallet.com

Samsung browser is the only way I have ever logged into this site, and even though it does save passwords, it does not have an optin to view ...

How can I recover my wallet?

  • @michaeljn(68)· 2703d

@steemit Just tested this new system, just wondering does this mean you basically have to open 2 seperate windows to work between steemit and steemitwallet? so you cant toggle between the 2 in the same browser window. :-( why not just have a button on the steemit wallet page that goes straight back to steemit _self, that way you can move between the 2 same as before except it still uses the 2 different systems/platforms?

Dear @steemitblog and @everyone else reading

    line2.png

I just had a chance to realize that some solid changes has been introduced to Steemit platform. Pretty much out of nowhere (as even someone who spent 6-8h dialy on Steemit the way I do, had no chance to "prepare" myself for what's coming).

The way those changes has been introduced has been very "brutal". Without any visible notification and explanation what is about to happen. I found it very disrespectful towards Steemit users.

    SHARE YOUR VIEW

I really love this platform for it's users and communities, but if this is what we all consider "decentralzied social media" then ... how is it any different from all centralized ones we know?

Please share your opinion and experience and definetly visit entire topic related to that latest "upgrade":

    https://steemit.com/steem/@steemitblog/social-condenser-is-live

    Dissapointed users

Reading comments made me already realize how frustrated many users out there are. Lack of communication skills between those who "RULE" this platform and communities and users growing here only reminds me of France and Yellow Vests movement. It (communication) simply doesn't seem to exist.

"OUR RULERS" do not seem to care about us "regular joes". And it's so bloody frustrating ...

People like @justinashby, @master-set, @frankvvv, @cflclosers and many others seem to share similar impression. What a bloody morning :/

ps.1) I wonder how many people will not be able to find their masterkeys now....

ps. 2) Does anyone know how to change language in wallet section? I always used english but now once Im in wallet then it seem to recognize my IP and showing everything in Polish.

ps. 3) I need to sign in again and again whenever I'm refreshing my wallet - do you guys have a similar problem?

    Yours Piotr

all very interesting takes on enlightened cryptonia where money comes out of thin air and steemit inc can pay their employees without having to withdraw half a million from steemcleaners ...

i thought that's what the ads were for ... if ads mean better steemprice keep em coming ...

as the major keyword would be "economically sustainable" ads is one of the better ways to keep it impartial.

Say someone calls himself misterdelegation and starts handing out by the millions instead of a general price derived from diverse sources of revenue where no one really gets to influence what people should be saying or thinking.

I think that's to be preferred but it is also my sincere conviction that most people just use the in-crowd speech and go with the flow, lol.

Ads = sustainability and not dependent on a few very rich, which would (would hahahlol) turn this place into a nice mirror of that other place where 1% dictates what pants are acceptable to wear outdoors ... like Jock Strap and the prom queen would ...

good thing this place is nothing like that ... whew ...

force is never used to mend, only to break and bend but i wholeheartedely agree everyone reserves the right to use ad-blockers ... the difference and major diff here is : if you block youtube it doesnt change anything but your experience

if you block here you actively influence the value of your wallet ... i still like the flixxo system best so far : you click the ad , you get some flixx for it ... total opt-in, WITH a cherry on top (dont bother replying i just passed by .. im not mister community much , maybe that gets better by 2025 when steem is at its rightful place at USD10 ... doesnt need much more than that i think to make this one hell of a ride ...)

ofcourse its not about the money, that's what everyone says ...OFCOURSE CRYPTO IS NOT ABOUT THE MONEY (a.k.a. lol ...) gud, i talked enough for the rest of the month now

or maybe ... before its personal again ... the rich seem to have a short fuse sometimes , im calling misterdelegation b/c off the top off my hat i cant really think of anyone with that much clout steering the whole of steem so much by sheer delegation to a very few. I imagine if freedom were to actually start picking sides it could be like a civil war or something (i dont really do the stats much on who's who because as kiplings cat all humins are alike to me .... (which is not in the hippie sense of the word i dare say)

so that again would stress my point on how ad-money and more diverse revenue shifts the powerbalance to

the magic word that basically started all of it :

    "de-centralized"

    <- hahalolsmileyhashtaghahalol enz ...

gud ... still the best thing since nakamoto came up with btc i suppose until proven otherwise ...

i dont like gamedevs who push code to their games to FORCE your soloplayer to team up either ... im just like that but thats another story ...

  • @ambr.global(51)· 2703d

Awesome update! It is a bit confusing at the start as I can't get back to steem it once entered in to the steemwallet website!

  • @michaeljn(68)· 2703d

100% Agreed on the Brave Browser comments,

I have been using Brave for a while now and loving it, as @soyrosa said it would be great if @steemit collaborated so we could use our steem wallets, I had to setup a brand new "Uphold" wallet, which I really did not want to do, but was forced to.

Brave browser I think will really be the next best thing to happen to browsers.

    check it out https://brave.com/mic278

So why can't we go directly back from wallet to our profile? This is cruel....

  • @freedomno1(57)· 2703d

Unsure on this update does not seem useless yet, kind of does. Makes it harder to go back to Steemit not movable between the two.

  • @eirik(69)· 2703d

Horrible. This is not how you get new users to the platform.

And don't even get me started on the ads.

  • @eungkot(25)· 2703d

excuseme, esteem aplication is not responsif now. Why???

  • @bescouted.com(60)· 2703d

Way to go. Why not, instead of making things simpler, make them more complicated. Thank you Steemit. I would also would like to thank for the ads too. Very innovative way to monetize. And improves my user experience by so much. You are brilliant.

  • @fycee(60)· 2703d

Thanks for this update and I guess this auto-log out everyone of us has experienced will surely make the bots have a hard time logging back in! Hahaha!

It's time to follow really active members now who didn't lose hope in this platform from this post.

    See you around fellas!

  • @olegw(69)· 2703d

  • @deemarshall(67)· 2703d

I logged into the new wallet okay, I think. I went to the market and tried to buy steem as I usually do but my transaction didn't work. What am I doing wrong, please?

Goodness, I found out how to do it at last. I had to change my password back to my main password. I hate all this mucking around with passwords.

  • @akomoajong(66)· 2704d

Hey on mobile, I can't seem to return back to my blog or anywhere else after visiting my wallet. I just have to close the wallet tab and reload my blog. This is so inconvenient, I am not sure you guys had a proper testing before implementing this dumb wallet.

  • @foxkoit(76)· 2704d

Pleased to see how this platform develops, and I want to see how it works over a long period of time, so I'm patient and I follow with interest :)

    Very cool new wallet.

  • @barski(77)· 2704d

Where are the keys now? I do not see where to download.

  • @cristo(60)· 2704d

I do not see an improvement in this, I do not want to be negative but it makes me that it will be a minus point for steemit. Perhaps they are not thinking about the new users, nor do they think about people who have little power, steemit will be left without interaction. All this will be more complicated for people, I see nothing good in this, I see something bad and nothing new to give. They want to make it more secure, but if the problem is in the robots and the platform spam. :)

  • @mattockfs(61)· 2704d

This should have been done the other way around. Steemit.com has everyone's trust, the new domain hasn't and creates a massive phishing loophole right now. You guys should have put the wallet only site on steemit.com moving the social site to social.steemit.com.

It's cool that security is starting to get taken more seriously, but messing with established trust pathways, opening up massive phishing pathways truly isn't the way to go.

Please reconsider this move before bad shit happens to people's money.

  • @khufu(55)· 2704d

I go out of my way to prevent advertising cookies and LSO's from taking up residence on this browser that I reserve for steemit and now that's a complete waste of effort. So I'll need to set up another browser to deal with the all the advertising baggage just to see my wallet or try to use the site with no-script or an ad blocker and deal with all the issues that creates.

  • @ustazkarim(60)· 2704d

    Very good,

  • @berserker(40)· 2704d

This is awesome, are there any new features to the wallet or does it still work the same?

  • @cflclosers(72)· 2704d

I wish there was a warning. I now don't have access to my owner key. I only wrote down the original password because that game me access to all my persmissions. I don't know how to reveal my owners key at this point. I was only able to get my posting and active keys through a long arduous process. not pleased right now.

Please put out an easy to understand instruction post about this new steemitwallet.com I have no idea about the password, there is no explanation about it. if i set a wallet password will this require a change of all my keys????

  • @darkflame(70)· 2704d

I had some issues before when trying to login so when I am at my desk I will try again.

    Update: THIS IS NOT WORKING

Some more warning before this change would have been great but we are moving forward. I worry about all those who have already lost their keys, and those who will lose them in this process. Thanks for the update, the more information you can put out for the average user, the better. When i joined in 2016 there was very little how to info. Steem is getting so much better. I will resteem this for my followers.

  • @frankvvv(68)· 2704d

I'm amazed that you think this was a good idea. Also, zero warning. I was thinking my browser got hacked. I was getting forwarded to the wallet all the time. Getting to my blog is not really possible after you've been forwarded to the wallet. Steemit is going down with management like this. At least that's what it seems like :(

  • @karenmckersie(74)· 2704d

Cool! will just need to get used to it ! Resteemed!👌👍😎

  • @theguruasia(69)· 2704d

@steemitblog, Yeah the current implementation is a cool idea and also "community-centric web application" is a good idea as well! Anyway we can step forward to that, but I think first we should bring SMT. It's urge requirement to compete in current market!

    Cheers~

  • @plumey(57)· 2704d

Can anybody explain why my history disappeared??

  • @nurah(54)· 2704d

    Good Job

  • @nathen007(73)· 2704d

A couple of points. When you click on wallet it takes you to the new App, shouldn't this automatically open in a new tab as opposed to taking you away from Steemit and related to this, clicking the back arrow on the tab from the wallet doesn't take you back to Steemit and what you were doing!! Annoying........or maybe me being pedantic ;-)

Secondly, why can't we log in using Steem Keychain? This is the most useful App on the whole blockchain!!

  • @gduran(68)· 2704d

Some people are seeing ads I haven't so I guess I am lucky or something happened, also I see some people aren't too glad about this change, I was not too surprised because this was already done at Whaleshares, kind of funny you know they are supposed to be the ones who are Steemit clones and yet Steemit is taking them as a model now.

  • @alrashel(56)· 2704d

    Expected change

  • @alexanderhoehne(51)· 2704d

Good info. Was wandering about the alert. Good development too.

  • @werkily(55)· 2704d

First of all, just tell me if bitcoin increase 10% then steem increase only 1% and other altcoin increase 20% and more.

When bitcoin decrease 10% then steem decrease 30% and other altcoin decrease 20%.

    What the heck is this?

Bitcoin increased and other alt coin going on the moon. But see the steem :(

  • @johan.forexus(47)· 2704d

Its quite confusing since you can not get back to the STEEM IT website once you got in to the wallet. Only way is editing the URL again :( I don't like changes, I guess we need to get used to it.

  • @funbobby51(60)· 2704d

There needs to be a button on steemitwallet.com so you can go back to steemit.com!

  • @threejay(66)· 2704d

so is the promote feature gone or dose it just work differently? anyone know?

  • @crypticat(74)· 2704d

Why Steemit, Why? Everything was working perfectly fine before and you had to go and change things. I guess we all have to go and reset our master passwords now and write them down again.

  • @dongkong(71)· 2704d

Please remove the wallet option from profile. I cant stop clicking the option 🙄.

  • @fararizky(65)· 2704d

  • @klye(75)· 2704d

Thanks for the official word on this stuff.

Good work on the development leap. <3

  • @futuremind(73)· 2704d

Nice works guys. I authored a post earlier outlining some of my thoughts regarding this. I think at the time changes were still being implemented however, and it invoked some frustration, but the finished product is pretty seamless and @steem-plus works fine with managing my filters for memos.

  • @dunstuff(63)· 2704d

so just to clarify... the main purpose of making the wallet site seperate ( which i have to log into with my master password to get my other passwords so i can log out, and put in the right password ) is so you could have ads on the main site?

wow. yeah, i see a lot of people about to leave, and steems price plummeting to 10c in the next month or so

  • @cepatviral(25)· 2704d

    Thanks for information

  • @davedickeyyall(79)· 2704d

So how do you transfer STEEM now..and the internal has disappeared.. I don't think this a improvement

  • @steem0(52)· 2704d

This sounds great and safe enough.

  • @dunstuff(63)· 2704d

one of the main things i liked about steemit was there were no ads. th money was just a bonus.

    but now . . .

*shrug. i may as well just go back to facebook

  • @sphenix(59)· 2704d

phew, thought is a phishing .......

  • @jumps(61)· 2704d

just my opinion... i got a habit to click wallet tab.. after this update, somehow make my browser tab increase and look messy because i do a job that require open alot of tabs on browser, it's took a bit of effort just to check my wallet then click my previous tab again to go back to main page/blog page conclusion; not so conveniece, i know.. it's seems minor problem but.. kinda miss old way when i click a wallet tab without creating a new tab on my browser.

  • @cryptopie(78)· 2704d

So posting key is for steemit.com and Password for steemitwallet.com OKEEE DOKEY

I hate changes but .... I really hate it.

  • @mermaidvampire(73)· 2704d

Good to know it was a legit change and not what I thought. If you would take a suggestion, try to put a pop-up dialogue box or something telling people it's a new thing so they don't get paranoid like I did. LOL

  • @reseller(75)· 2704d

I thought this was a PHISH earlier. Had me asking around. Can't you use KEYCHAIN for this? Why does this feel so dirty?

  • @melinda010100(80)· 2704d

It all seems to be working great for me! Thanks for this! I'll be on the lookout for anyone having difficulties and will help where I can.

  • @hitmeasap(75)· 2704d

Okay, this was not so good. I obviously appreciate the attempt to make everything more secure and all that, but this has clearly become a problem for several users.

I have saved one of my passwords on a piece of paper. It's safe there. But, I have also saved my passwords in my browser, so I log in automatically. When we now moved to Steemit wallet, I couldn't log in to my account. No passwords were saved, as I never used that before, and I tried the password I had saved on a paper.

    • It didn't work.

Only because I have gambled on epicdice just a few days ago, I had Steem Keychain installed. That was what saved me from losing 4.7K Steem.

Sure, one could argue this being my own fault or whatever... I'm okay with that. But it could've been a real nightmare.

Anyhow, now when I've managed to login, I want to save all my passwords. But I can't, because I can't reveal them.

Whenever I click on "reveal" to see my password, I need to login. When I login, I need to click that "reveal" button again, and the same thing happens over and over.

So, I'm basically stuck here, and I don't even want to turn off my computer or close the browser, in case something else happens or in case something else have changed somewhere... I need my passwords, but I can't get them...

  • @deanliu(83)· 2704d

Here are some of my suggestions: Suggestions to the new Steemit.com

p.s. I haven't browsed through all comments so it's possible some or all of my opinions have been put forward. :)

  • @master-set(65)· 2704d

This new site is soooooo lame. It suuuuuuks

  • @ayogom(69)· 2704d
    1. Do you plan to apply Keychain to Steemit?
    2. Too many ads on a webpage.
    3. I hope the Wallet page will open as a new page. The wallet on my page will not open on a new page.
    4. I think I need a special interface for steemitWallet. I don't think there is a difference in the interface, so I think you can get hacked.
  • @artopium(67)· 2704d

    Couple of problems here...

First of all, when you click on your "wallet," you're taken to the new site...and then you can't go back when you click the back button.

    Fix that.

Secondly - when you try to change your profile settings/info, you need to go to your wallet to do that. So you're not separating the social part of the site from the wallet. And then, to make things even soooooo much "better," when you change your profile info via the wallet site, it only changes that info on your wallet site, not your actual social media profile on Steemit.com.

    Fix that.

Once again, in your attempt to make things "better" and "safer," you've made things more complicated, more broken, and not actually "safer" at all, because now you need to sign your keys more often just to view/adjust the same things you could do before on one site.

So, congratulations. At least your "development" is consistent, even if horrid.

  • @raycoms(71)· 2704d

When I go into the wallet, login and then click settings, it logs me out and shows me empty settings, seems like a bug. Also happens when I click on the two rewards tabs. Couldn't you make this more immersive?

In my opinion, if I am logged in with steemit as well as with steem wallet it should be possible to switch seamlessly between the two apps as before. As in, leave the same buttons and options as always there but make them redirect to steemit for social content and steemwallet for wallet content.

Right now it is not very smooth to handle. I get redirected to my wallet when I go there but from there it is difficult to return to the social content.

  • @oivas(71)· 2704d

That sounds to be a good job done. Have to try it out on my laptop, though.

Feedback, change the title tag on steemitwallet from just steemit to steemitwallet, as it's not a correct page title. Being listed as plainly "steemit" makes knowing which tab is which a bit of a downside.

Also, why not save the domain costs and just use a subdomain? Like wallet.steemit.com ? Sorry if this question was answered previously, haven't seen anything about it. I believe that the security issues with ads wouldn't apply to this... I could be wrong. Thanks!!

Great job Steemit Team, i like the split of the wallet from the steemit. i have suggestion we need new steemit UI/UX otherwise all is ok for me ads is ok i understand for the better of steem dev . and people who don't like ads just use other interface who don't show ads, this is why i love blockchain (dapps) are the future because we have the choice to choose what we want.

Great Job guys and thanks for making the steem blockchain better I'm happy to be part of this amazing and the best crypto community Happy Steeming everyone ^^

  • @bryan-imhoff(69)· 2704d

I’d urge a bit less ad “density” in feeds. Looks like I’m seeing an ad insert about every 8 posts. I think this should be at least 12-15.

On the other hand, in favor of ads... please, please, please, revamp the official promoted post system to do the exact same thing you’re doing with Google Ads! That’s an ad system anyone can use and everyone benefits from via the burn mechanism! (Promoted post content is also valuable to advertisers & brands as it dodges ad blockers, incentivizing them to purchase & burn Steem to participate)

  • @velourex(54)· 2704d

Streamlining and making it a little harder for others to see the nitty-gritty of other's wallets is a good move. A little annoying to have to sign in again to accept payouts but not a big deal. Seeing ads on our site, while annoying to some, I see as a very positive business move. Steem is the real thing. Thanks for the hard work:):):)

  • @creativetruth(71)· 2704d

  • @andrewgenaille(68)· 2704d

You can't go from your wallet and back to steemit seemlessly like before! Having to open a new tab is a right pain in the the ass. If it ain't broke don't fix it! Springs to mind.

So when will Steemit role out an original idea of their own? Asking for a friend.

The Wallet should have links to Steemit.com, but it's great. :)

    Hey, @steemitblog.

I've been testing out the steemitwallet off and on since it became live, and it seems to kick me out (or require a login every so often) something the other wallet never did.

Also, I've noticed the ad experimentation. I'm not sure if you're just doing a shotgun approach to see which ads might get clicked on from what position, but having one in the header, one on either side of the page, and then ads showing up in the feed all at once hopefully won't be the ongoing solution.

I'm not going to be your demographic for ads, though, so you don't need to consider anything I say about it. I understand the reasons behind it and if this is what you feel needs to be done, do what you got to do.

I still like the idea of splitting things apart, and look forward to whatever other enhancements this might afford to steemit.com.

Please start doing something useful instead of making the end - User experience even more complicated..

Wow. WTF? This is stupid. Goodbye new users! If you wanted to kill this chain this is a bleeding wound that will fester and kill STEEM.

Good job. I had hope and this dissolved it completely. I no longer have faith in your process. I am done here after 2 years of painful loyalty.

    Idiots.

  • @whatsup(76)· 2704d

Hopefully, you realize you just locked a lot of people out of their wallets who will have no idea and no help from the UI to figure out which keys to use and whether or not they have the correct keys logged somewhere.

The first to be impacted will be stakeholders and investors who rely on wallet transactions to run their businesses.

It's an inconvenience to most of us. For some it will be overwhelming.

Some are apparently seeing ads, I don't, because I use Brave Browser.

So for users: go download Brave Browser. For Steemit, Inc: get yourself verified as a Brave publisher :-)

Clicked wallet ends up taking you out of steemit id rather prefer it opening in a new tab? its kind of annoying going from wallet back to steemit at the moment.

  • @sn0n(65)· 2704d

    Here comes all the 'im leaving steemit because of the ads' posts... Funny, I reported about the changes before the official blogs!! https://steemit.com/steem/@sn0n/breaking-news-steem-wallet-changes Love it. Keep up the good work guys. Don't focus too much on that Fiat monetization though... Kinda goes against the grain and not in the good ways. Ideals man.. ideals. (;

Nice touch with the google ads... That's gonna go over real well with the community at large...

Edit: On second thought, at least give us the ability to embed iframes so we can do the same with our posts.

  • @abitcoinskeptic(75)· 2704d

There is obvious link from social to wallet, but not from wallet to social. I got trapped on my handphone.

  • @soyrosa(75)· 2704d

Congratulations! It will take some getting used to (you'd be surprised to see how many Steemians don't know this was going to happen), but once everyone knows we'll have a more secure wallet and steemit.com can see further improvements.

I'll come back if I see something buggy of course :D

    Cheers!

  • @kabir88(61)· 2704d

I am seeing ads while logged in. Is that normal?

  • @holybranches(60)· 2704d

    I'm seeing ads too.
