Steemit Update: Leaving "Survive Mode" ... and Beta!

Since the company's layoffs last fall, the Steemit team has been focused on infrastructure cost reductions and advertising sales on steemit.com. By releasing two state-of-the-art pieces of software (Hivemind and MIRA), reducing operating costs, improving the efficiency of our AWS infrastructure, and beginning our paid advertising program, we are now hitting our cost reduction and revenue projections.

We have picked the majority of “low hanging fruit” with respect to cost reductions and restored the organization to a financially sustainable condition with a worst-case scenario operational runway that is more than sufficient to begin scoping future enhancements to the Steem blockchain and steemit.com.

@elipowell & Christi White

eli + christi.jpg

These changes began with the decision by @ned to hand over the reigns of Steemit Inc. to Elizabeth Powell who became Managing Director of Steemit about 6 months ago. In her efforts to turn the organization around she was aided by our indispensable Head of Operations, Christi White.

To learn more about Elizabeth Powell, check out her appearance on the latest episode of The Steemit Podcast, available now!

New Leadership

In order to shepard the organization into this new phase of growth, we have restructured the company and assigned four new team leads who have demonstrated exceptional judgment, skill, work ethic, and commitment to the Steem ecosystem.

team leads.jpg

Justin Welch - @justinw

@justinw has been leading Steemit’s DevOps efforts since its first year in operation and is now leading the team as Head of Engineering. Neither the Steem blockchain nor steemit.com can function without the stable, secure, and scalable infrastructure that Justin oversees. Unfortunately for Justin that means that whenever anything goes wrong, he is absolutely indispensable. Since he is also critical when it comes to just all around "making things better," that means he has gotten very little time off, and very little sleep. If we could clone just one person, we all agree it would be Justin. Since we can’t do that, we’re putting him in charge of our engineering efforts.

@vandeberg

@vandeberg has been with Steemit since before its inception and oversees all blockchain development as Senior Blockchain Engineer. Michael has had a massive influence over the direction that Steem has taken and with the benefit of hindsight we have all seen the wisdom behind the difficult choices he insisted be made, and the folly of ignoring his warnings. His insistence on pursuing the utilization of RocksDB to migrate Steem to commodity-hardware well over a year ago is just one example of his foresight.

@roadscape

@roadscape, Senior Product Engineer, was one of the earliest additions to the Steemit team. He was also the developer behind steemd.com, the first user interface for accessing the information stored on the Steem blockchain. @roadscape went on to architect Hivemind, software that not only dramatically reduces the cost of running a blockchain node, but which also unlocks a universe of possibilities for social apps.

Whether people realize it or not, Hivemind also has the potential to offer the strengths of so-called “Smart Contracts” with almost none of the downsides. Hivemind will enable us to create Communities on Steem (among many other features), which is why it will play a critical role in the future of steemit.com, and the Steem ecosystem as a whole. That’s why we wanted to empower its developer to push it to the limits!

@andrarchy

@andrarchy has been a part of the Steemit community since before he was part of the Steemit team, creating content on the platform that helped educate new users on the complexities of the Steem ecosystem. Originally hired as Community Liaison for Steemit, he would go on to become our Content Director, and now Head of Communications where he oversees everything relating to content, marketing, and of course, communications.

Thrive Mode

While these last few months have been incredibly challenging for us, these hardships have not been able to stop this organization, nor this community, from surviving. Thanks to the many hard decisions we’ve made over the last 6 months, and the amazing software our engineers have managed to release, we feel that Steemit Inc. is well-positioned to transition from “survive mode” to “thrive mode.”

Thanks to Hivemind, and the splitting of Condenser into two separate applications (Social and Wallet), we’ve been able to improve steemit.com at a rapid rate, while maintaining our rigorous security standards. And we’re just getting started. For these reasons, we feel the time is right for steemit.com ... to leave Beta!

Check my tribute to Steem :-). We need more attention, in all areas. Steem has so much potential. What we do not need are the thousands of downvoter armies. Let's think of something. We need antidotes against such monsters. These posts nothing, do not comment. The only thing these guys do is to down vote 100%. Such a destructive behavior must be prevented! Here is an example of such a downvote troll and there are over 10K on the blockchain. http://tiny.cc/7qydez Please do something against such people or give us an instrument of resistance.

    Great News!

  • @aaliyahholt(71)· 2651d

I hope you guys don't have to resort to shutting Steem down. This is a great site to monetize your content.

  • @x18echo(33)· 2652d

For what it's worth... I'm brand new here and don't have the history that seems to go with much of the comments I've read thus far, so this is for those in the head shed looking for a comment coming from fresh eyes and experience.

The concept of a blockchain blog brought me here. I'm also new to crypto currency so to be honest, for this newbie it isn't about the prospect of monetization at this point.

I'm trying to navigate around and set up shop by interacting with the menus and instructions, and although the language is kind of new and different, it seems easy enough to get started so far.

I'm also on minds.com so my experience here is really a test to see which platform feels like a better fit. With both Minds and Steemit I am looking more at the learning curve and how feasible setting up shop is.

Anyhow, just thought that those on high might appreciate the honest comment from a baby-steemer :)

  • @vonbetelgeuse(42)· 2652d

I've had some horrible experiences with AWS and apparently it's considerably more expensive than Google Cloud. Have you guys considered collaborating with Holo? Decentralized hosting seems like it would be a great collab.

  • @fermionico(81)· 2652d

The blockchain of Steem and Steemit have become an important part of my life, knowing this news comforts me with the fact that I have always believed in the company as an unbeatable idea. Regardless of what the "haters" think, nothing will change the fact that the work has been done. A hundred people in Venezuela are grateful to Steemit, for the way their lives have changed; In particular, I am an ex-entrepreneur turned into a writer and our company has been a balm and a place where I can share my follies without any fear and with the assurance of receiving just reward for my effort. I predict better days and brilliant results. Thanks for existing!

I continued the reading using the translator, I consider the information as valuable. I love having two enterprising ladies in the team

You are fighting there with the budget cuts, I'm sure you have no idea how many Venezuelans depend or supplement your money input by writing here, some with very nice jobs and we have taken great care of users we have known by Here, I hope that Steemit never disappears, I would lose my stories, I hope that one day a grandson of mine will find my stories on the web and express, look how beautiful my grandmother's stories are. Concisely and nicely written @?...? (maybe andarchy ...) / @steemitblog. Just celebrated my 1st anniversary on the Steem blockchain. Given the last 6 months and the uncertainty associated with it, was encouraged to read this:

"... we feel that Steemit Inc. is well-positioned to transition from “survive mode” to “thrive mode.”

Looking forward to seeing how this "plays out" in the next 6 months. Thanks for keeping us informed! 👍

  • @joonto(61)· 2655d

Though I write from time to time on Steemit, I must admit that I don't come here often and I am surprised about how many people are working full time on this platform. I wish you good luck and I hope the new Steemit can be cleaner, especially from the abusers that nothing bring to the content and its quality :)

  • @littleboy(73)· 2655d

My first impression of @elipowell is that she is more intelligent than @ned. She also appears to have some expertise in the relevant fields to lead Steem Inc. Ah, finally, I can feel a little more confident about holding Steem.

  • @mmunited(67)· 2655d

We are waiting for that day steemit is leaving beta state. I can no longer wait.

  • @fakeinternetnews(57)· 2656d

Well, in the past week, I've had to block two accounts who are throwing their weight around. I muted "I Flag Trash" who at a 62 seems to have enough weight to make my posts invisible. And some other account I blocked was only a 59. Looking at "I Flag Trash"'s account, its clear there are no blogs. And the account only exists to harass and downvote people.

If you really want to see this crypto-currency go away and be a "also ran", then by all means do nothing. Because after seeing how easy it is for someone to buy an account and be able to silence my hard work, all that tells me is your entire model is flawed. And I am not going to contribute to this blockchain with content that could potentially make it more valuable when I know all it takes is some ultra-reactionary person who clearly does not have a cogent argument to lower the user experience here.

Both of these accounts seems like bots that search out key words and downvote content over a broad spectrum. And the reason I feel they are bots is that both times each account that downvoted my content had one negative sentence about my content that was completely without any specific argument against the content.

So basically is what you have now is a super-powered 8 year old who is nagging anyone they disagree with and basically telling anyone with something to say out of mainstream media that "You're stupid! because I said your stupid!".

And honestly, if the whole thing goes down the drain because your loyal users who helped build a big user base, stop using Steemit because it got trolled to death by ultra-reactionary negative bot accounts, you can't say we didn't warn you.

Powering down until it's all gone unless I get confirmation you've fixed it.

    Sad!

  • @karenmckersie(74)· 2656d

Oh wow. Just seeing this now. Very exciting news. Steemit, Inc. has a sustainable business model! Hopefully soon as you begin to bring in cash flow and start hiring again we'll see this project really hit its stride. There's so much potential here and the realization of that potential is just around the corner. I wish you all the best of luck and success beyond your wildest imagination.

  • @jrcornel(82)· 2657d

By the way, if you guys need funds have you considered doing any capital raises via more traditional routes?

Instead of selling steem on the open market perhaps there are investors out there that would be interested in investing in steemit.com for an equity stake?

Raising a couple million that way might go a long ways in ensuring your survival and then ultimately thriving...

Sorry if I'm addressing the question to a wrong person, but @elipowell seems to be the right one.

    1. Why there is still no WYSIWYG Editor, it's eliminating a vast majority of users
    2. Why there is such a lag for account creation and why it's not free? In real world, if you need to pay to join - it's almost certainly a scam. You need users, to boost the price of Steem, not 1 Steem to earn, not a dollar to earn
    3. Why it's impossible for people outside Steem to interact with the content? Make a guest account, make this place interactive
    4. Add some skins, some templates... You know how WP looks like. If Steemit wants to be The Blogging Platform, it must look like a blog
    5. You are supporting several communities - why? What are you getting in return? Are those communities doing well or not? How do you measure it
    6. You added banners - why? The users are not coherent, what can be sold to some people with some interests living somewhere? Isn't it better to profile (build the communities) around some type of content?
    7. Why don't you make some sort of strategic partnership? With Patreon, SkillShare, SqareSpace, GuruShots, whatever digital product with a strong base of users. You are printing Steem no matter what, just channel it into the right hands.

If you want some help for a radical change - I'm here. I have a lot of experience in what I'm doing and I have a lot of references to back up my claims.

Sorry for being pessimistic, but if it stays in this form - it will die off. Just like pagers or telegraphs or VHS players. Obsolete tech.

  • @alexvanaken(68)· 2659d

Good to hear you are all doing better

  • @d-pend(76)· 2659d

If nothing else, I think it's a wonderful idea to exit the "beta mode mentality" which allows excuses to be made easily.

Actually, I've been relatively impressed at the change of trajectory of the Steemit team over the past couple months, so good job. Keep focusing on what is important and listen to the community.

The vast majority of people are very negative because of the recent bear market trend. They will be the same people screaming "to the moon" in a few months.

People that actually build and develop things regardless of trend are the ones that will make an impact long-term. Vision is vital.

  • @crystalandbones(56)· 2659d

Don’t we all want Steemit and Steem to succeed? Why is there so much negativity? We are all part of what makes Steemit successful or not. The Steemit team is doing there best every single day and if there’s constantly negativity being put out there, it counteracts that. We can do better than this.

  • @socky(73)· 2659d

Hellow @elipowell. STEEM is steadily slipping down in ranking compared to other coins. We are no longer in the top 10. It is more like close to 60. Now that Steemit is no longer in survival mode, Are we to expect that Steemit will now actively pursue listings on new and existing exchanges?

Hi, @elipowell. Since you’re now the big dog and Ned really didn’t seem to grasp social media advertising/monetization as the owner of a social media site/company, I wanted to ask you...

Do you believe there is a way for your platform to integrate with Brave/BAT for additional revenue? Do you believe it’s possible for your development team to reach out to Brave’s team and potentially work with them and the BAT on any blockchain integration between the two projects?

  • @flaxz(75)· 2660d

Great news, all this work are likely to pay off rather quickly I think, as for your advertising efforts I do recommend you to join Brave rewards and earn ad revenue from the people using that browser too, my guess is that the percentage of Steemians and other visitors who use it is quite high.

  • @ganjafarmer(76)· 2660d

I'd like to name myself as el chapo of Steemit...

Lead stoner. Fully baked and accompanied by the infamous Zeus the wonder puppy, who runs really fast, has the tail of doom, and is able to jumps to catch the ball.

And we definitely need to stop the "quality police and make this a more welcoming place. I've had all my real life friends ran off and even lost actual real friends from the petty financial drama.

And yeah the radical vegans here really are fascist and controlling as well as abusive.

But I've worked really hard growing the community here... Maybe this can get back on track. IMG_20190515_163807.jpg

  • @apshamilton(73)· 2660d

Congratulations to the whole team at Steemit Inc. Conducting such a corporate turnaround is not easy. Developing state of the art software in the middle of a period of austerity is difficult.

You have revolutionised your own company and the Steem ecosystem, empowering others to take the lead in areas you were not able to (Steem Engine, SCOT etc).

Steel is forged in fire and Steem is a much stronger ecosystem than it was 7 months ago. Ready for the next Crypto bull run!

Now that you are out of crisis mode, perhaps its time for Steemit Inc to sign up to @jpbliberty's class action lawsuit against the crypto ad ban of Facebook & Google. Steemit Inc could win tens of millions of dollars in damages - wouldn't that improve the balance sheet! It costs nothing but benefits not just you, but the whole Steem ecosystem and Crypto community as a whole.

Just send an encrypted memo to @jpbliberty saying "Join Crypto Class Action. My [email/Telegram/Skype] is [xxx]."

  • @spectrumecons(75)· 2660d

We removed "beta" from our landing page

(you know, like we renamed "flagging" to "downvoting" ;-) )

  • @pagandance(56)· 2660d

"the folly of ignoring his warnings" ?!?

  • @mrosenquist(72)· 2660d

Probably the best status-update I have ever seen from the team! Well done. Keep the pressure on and moving momentum forward.

  • @surfermarly(75)· 2660d

Congrats on entering the thrive mode !

It reminds me of this part from Ned's speech at Steemfest³ (Nov 2018):

We don’t want to just survive in but thrive on crypto businesses.

Good to see you found a way to work towards that vision.

Now I have a question regarding the term beta. Maybe it's a stupid one, but what does "leaving beta" effectively mean (besides the fact that the word beta will disappear from the logo)? Is it a term used in development, indicating that a product is ready for the markets? Does it have any legal implications for the company?

Would love to know more about that, thank you in advance :-)

What's next? SMT? How long do you think its deadline will be? Do you collaborate with STEEM-engine? Or is it a separate SMT?

As much as the SMT schedule, I believe it is important to promote SMT projects.

  • @greenrun(66)· 2661d

    Good news! Thank you.

  • @flemingfarm(81)· 2661d

I take it that this means that Steemit will be run more like a business now and not used as the status symbol like it was before. Hopefully Ned's visions are limited to occasional ideas and the new team can finally get this ship on the water.

Thanks so much for the update, and...

Leaving beta, where we headed now?

  • @outerground(63)· 2661d

    Go Steemit.. Go Steemit >>>

  • @dearw(69)· 2661d

Great news! I'm so glad to read about it. We needed this kind of publication.

  • @masterthematrix(61)· 2661d

Thank you Steemit Team for all the great improvements that you have delivered the last months. Are we ready to leave Beta stage??? Well, I hope that your Team is eager and encouraged enough to see the potential of changing the reward pool mechanism. This is IMO the biggest and most lucrative chance to bring real change, faireness and growth back to Steem. There are many proposals in this regard, but my idea is that Steemit.com needs to get seperated from the main Steem reward pool. Steemit.com should consider for the health of the whole Steem ecosystem to become its own SMT project and community within the Steem ecosystem. The growth of Steem is with all its Dapps, communities and projects that are developed by our brilliant users. Therefore the Steem reward pool and the Proof of Brain mechanism should be used to discover, support and develop those Dapps and communities. Its still hard for me to imagine a successful Steem ecosystem where all users are using different dapps, but if they want to mine the underlying infrastructure coin Steem, than they need to come back to Steemit.com and start blogging. This is IMO not sustainable...I hope you guys have any ideas or suggestions for this conflict of interest in the future. But these are just my thoughts and I'm not a developer and have no clue how difficult this is. Anyways, I would be happy to hear your thoughts about this topic?

    VHS here we come!!!!

Seriously though this is very good to hear.
  • @bashadow(70)· 2661d

Okay, someone has to say it, if you did not open and look at the pictures that @sift666 included with his disagreement comments to comments or enlightenment to comments made because they were greyed out by down votes, you missed some very funny meme's that actually did a good job of counterpointing the comments.

On a side note that has absolutely nothing to do with the post, but a little bit to do with the comments, which spelling do you prefer?....Grey...or....Gray. I myself prefer Grey, and I do not even live in England.

  • @stevescoins(70)· 2661d

Leaving beta is a big step and should build confidence. I hope we can see progress on the community feature soon as this could be vital to building the users up. I know things can be tough, but keep working on making Steem what it can be

  • @jaraumoses(69)· 2661d

I am really grateful for this update. I would also thank the person in charge of the Twitter accounts of Steem and Steemit.. whoever he/she is kudos to them for the great work they are doing.

I would love to see more of these execs making noise on Twitter...!!

I have participated in many giveways for many different coins but missed seeing any by Steem/Steem.

How about offer folks like Pomp,McAfee, Justin Sun or CZ accounts..???

Just to màke noise about Steem or Steemit(since it's the face of Steem) like Justin does with Tron and CZ with Binance..

  • @clumsysilverdad(65)· 2661d

thrive mode... i'll buy that for a nickel … a crypto nickel that is

  • @prydefoltz(75)· 2661d

I am very thankful for all the changes and the team’s hard work. I assert that steemit and its sister apps are the best online places to be. Part of me is reluctant to see us grow ... but we will ... we will ... because we have such a great community of bloggers too. Steem for the win:)

  • @tj4real(69)· 2661d

Guys i trust you will do the work as you have alreading been doing. Getting to love steem again with all these new developments. Hope to see more of this trend

    1. Where is Ned?
    2. Who is Christi White?
  • @ahsu123(35)· 2661d

  • @chekohler(76)· 2661d

  • @aussieninja(70)· 2661d

Wahey! Out of Beta! That's exciting! Although I assume it won't be too long until the Justin Cloning Blockchain heads into Beta itself.

What is @ned's role now? I assume his business card says 'Visionary' but what does his day to day look like now?

Congratulations on hitting Thrive-mode, I'm sure it wasn't easy to get here, but we're all excited about the future of our little blockchain.

  • @actifit-peter(72)· 2661d

Great and exciting news! I think you are on the right path and I am looking forward to all things yet to come. Also very nice to get the profiles and names of those important people behind the scene.
